Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometimes you find love in the most unexpected of places... This is not one of those times. Everyone expects Billie Bridgerton to marry one of the Rokesby brothers. The two families have been neighbors for centuries, and as a child the tomboyish Billie ran wild with Edward and Andrew. Either one would make a perfect husband... someday. Sometimes you fall in love with exactly the person you think you should... Or not. There is only one Rokesby Billie absolutely cannot tolerate, and that is George. He may be the eldest and heir to the earldom, but he's arrogant, annoying, and she's absolutely certain he detests her. Which is perfectly convenient, as she can't stand the sight of him, either. But sometimes fate has a wicked sense of humor... Because when Billie and George are quite literally thrown together, a whole new sort of sparks begins to fly. And when these lifelong adversaries finally kiss, they just might discover that the one person they can't abide is the one person they can't live without...

Book On the Trail of the Serpent

Download or read book On the Trail of the Serpent written by Richard Neville and published by Random House. This book was released on 2020-08-06 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ***NOW THE SUBJECT OF THE MAJOR BBC TV SERIES *** DISCOVER THE INCREDIBLE TRUE CRIME STORY OF SERIAL KILLER, CHARLES SOBHRAJ, AND THE RACE TO BRING HIM TO JUSTICE Charles Sobhraj remains one of the world's great con men, and as a serial killer, the story of his life and capture endures as legend. Born in Vietnam to a Vietnamese mother and Indian father, Sobhraj grew up with a fluid sense of identity, moving to France before being imprisoned and stripped of his multiple nationalities. Driven to floating from country to country, continent to continent, he became the consummate con artist, stealing passports, smuggling drugs and guns across Asia, busting out of prisons and robbing wealthy associates. But as his situation grew more perilous, he turned to murder, preying on Western tourists dropping out across the 1970s hippie route, leaving a trail of dead bodies and gruesome crime scenes in his wake. First published in 1979, but updated here to include new material, On the Trail of the Serpent draws its readers into the story of Sobhraj's life as told exclusively to journalists Richard Neville and Julie Clarke. Blurring the boundaries between true crime and novelisation, this remains the definitive book about Sobhraj - riveting tale of sex, drugs, adventure and murder.

Book The Global Achievement Gap

Download or read book The Global Achievement Gap written by Tony Wagner and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2014-03-11 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the best efforts of educators, our nation's schools are dangerously obsolete. Instead of teaching students to be critical thinkers and problem-solvers, we are asking them to memorize facts for multiple choice tests. This problem isn't limited to low-income school districts: even our top schools aren't teaching or testing the skills that matter most in the global knowledge economy. Our teens leave school equipped to work only in the kinds of jobs that are fast disappearing from the American economy. Meanwhile, young adults in India and China are competing with our students for the most sought-after careers around the world. Education expert Tony Wagner has conducted scores of interviews with business leaders and observed hundreds of classes in some of the nation's most highly regarded public schools. He discovered a profound disconnect between what potential employers are looking for in young people today (critical thinking skills, creativity, and effective communication) and what our schools are providing (passive learning environments and uninspired lesson plans that focus on test preparation and reward memorization). He explains how every American can work to overhaul our education system, and he shows us examples of dramatically different schools that teach all students new skills. In addition, through interviews with college graduates and people who work with them, Wagner discovers how teachers, parents, and employers can motivate the &"net"; generation to excellence. An education manifesto for the twenty-first century, The Global Achievement Gap is provocative and inspiring. It is essential reading for parents, educators, business leaders, policy-makers, and anyone interested in seeing our young people succeed as employees and citizens. Download or read book Touring Poverty written by Bianca Freire-Medeiros and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-11-13 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Touring Poverty addresses a highly controversial practice: the transformation of impoverished neighbourhoods into valued attractions for international tourists. In the megacities of the Global South, selected and idealized aspects of poverty are being turned into a tourist commodity for consumption. The book takes the reader on a journey through Rocinha, a neighbourhood in Rio de Janeiro which is advertised as "the largest favela in Latin America". Bianca Freire-Medeiros presents interviews with tour operators, guides, tourists and dwellers to explore the vital questions raised by this kind of tourism. How and why do diverse social actors and institutions orchestrate, perform and consume touristic poverty? In the context of globalization and neoliberalism, what are the politics of selling and buying the social experience of cities, cultures and peoples? With a full and sensitive exploration of the ethical debates surrounding the ‘sale of emotions’ elicited by the first-hand contemplation of poverty, Touring Poverty is an innovative book that provokes the reader to think about the role played by tourism – and our role as tourists – within a context of growing poverty. It will be of interest to students of sociology, anthropology, ethnography and methodology, urban studies, tourism studies, mobility studies, development studies, politics and international relations.

  • Publisher : Createspace Independent Publishing Platform
  • Release : 2016-09-16
  • ISBN : 9781535304528

Download or read book Malawi Memories written by Anne Dart Taylor and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malawi Memories is an account of life in 1967-1971 in Lilongwe, then the capital of the Central Region. It is drawn from the letters written by Humphrey and Anne Taylor to their parents, in England. Humphrey was appointed Rector of St Peter's Anglican church in Lilongwe. His parish covered a huge area of outstations, churches, schools and political detention centres. Anne taught English and History in the Boys' and Girls' Secondary Schools at Likuni, a R.C. mission station five miles outside Lilongwe and, with a friend, ran a Homecraft class for African women in the Church hall.. St Peter's Rectory was the midpoint of the Diocese, so many people travelling between the north and south, stayed overnight. Eventually, the Diocese agreed to let Humphrey build St Peter's Guest House, which now features in the Rough Guide to Africa. The book describes the joys of living in such a beautiful country and notes the development of the Taylors' two little daughters, for the benefit of their grandparents in England. It records the Humphrey and Anne Taylor's efforts to serve the disparate communities they found there and the friendships they made with both Africans and Europeans. There are accounts of the tensions of working in post-colonial Africa, with inevitable friction between the races and cultures. Visits to other countries in Central Africa, enabled them to compare their political development with what was happening in Malawi, where President Hastings Banda became ever more despotic. During their leave in the UK, in 1970, Humphrey did an MA in African Urban Studies at SOAS. They returned to Malawi in December 1971 but nine months later, Humphrey was deported from Malawi on President Banda's orders, because of his involvement with political detainees. The whole family returned to the UK. However, they retained their love for Malawi and its people and in 2000, Humphrey and Anne were invited to return to take part in the Jubilee celebrations of St Peter's Church. They met old friends, including the Vice President, a former teaching colleague of Anne's, and were able to see how the new democratic government was working as well as to observe the impact of AIDS and the doubling of the population in a country without mineral resources.
