Dès l'arrivée des premiers colons venus s'établir en Acadie, l'industrie forestière a dominé la scène économique, notamment par des livraisons de bois à la France pour la construction navale, puis à la Grande-Bretagne après la Conquête. Cette industrie a atteint son point culminant au 19e siècle avec la fourniture de bois d'oeuvre à la Grande-Bretagne qui avait épuisé ses propres forêts, et en particulier par la construction de plus de 6 000 voiliers à grands mâts en pin blanc dans les nombreux chantiers maritimes du Nouveau-Brunswick, la plupart pour la marine britannique. Certains de ces voiliers ont été les plus rapides au monde à leur époque! La fin des grands voiliers en bois a été un choc pour l'économie forestière du Nouveau-Brunswick, mais a été en partie compensée par l'arrivée, au début du 20e siècle, des usines de pâtes et papier. Éventuellement, les États-Unis devinrent le principal marché d'exportation du bois canadien et en 1915 ce marché était 9 fois plus important que le marché britannique! The most common strategy for addressing this kind of transgression relies on policing and prisons. But through examining commonly accepted typologies of high-risk intimate partner violence, Ardath Whynacht shows that policing can be understood as part of the same root problem as the violence it seeks to mend and provides an abolitionist frame for the most dangerous forms of intimate partner violence. This book illustrates that the origins of both the carceral state and toxic masculinity are situated in settler colonialism and racial capitalism and sees police homicide and domestic homicide as akin. Describing an experience of domestic homicide in her community and providing a deeply personal analysis of some of the most recent cases of homicide in Canada, the author inhabits the complexity of seeking abolitionist justice. Insurgent Love traces the major risk factors for domestic homicide within the structures of racial capitalism and suggests transformative, anti-capitalist, anti-racist, feminist approaches for safety, prevention and justice.
