Book Sustainable food planning evolving theory and practice

Download or read book Sustainable food planning evolving theory and practice written by André Viljoen and published by Wageningen Academic Publishers. This book was released on 2012-03-30 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With over half the world's population now deemed to be urbanised, cities are assuming a larger role in political debates about the security and sustainability of the global food system. Hence, planning for sustainable food production and consumption is becoming an increasingly important issue for planners, policymakers, designers, farmers, suppliers, activists, business and scientists alike. The rapid growth of the food planning movement owes much to the fact that food, because of its unique, multi-functional character, helps to bring people together from all walks of life. In the wider contexts of global climate change, resource depletion, a burgeoning world population, competing food production systems and diet-related public health concerns, new paradigms for urban and regional planning capable of supporting sustainable and equitable food systems are urgently needed. This book addresses this urgent need. By working at a range of scales and with a variety of practical and theoretical models, this book reviews and elaborates definitions of sustainable food systems, and begins to define ways of achieving them. To this end 4 different themes have been defined as entry-points into the discussion of 'sustainable food planning'. These are (1) urban agriculture, (2) integrating health, environment and society, (3) food in urban design and planning and (4) urban food governance.

Book Surgery of Anorectal Diseases

Download or read book Surgery of Anorectal Diseases written by P. Aeberhard and published by Springer. This book was released on 1989-12-19 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding of the pathology and causation of anorectal diseases is constantly increasing. This has led to changes in how treatment is cho sen. There is almost no anorectal condition for which some new thera peutic approach has not been recently tried, and several of these do not involve surgery at all. In any developing field it is important to maintain contact with change. Surgery of Anorectal Diseases does this in abundance by its very breadth and by the detailed and up-to-date manner in which it deals with each condition. Beautifully illustrated and clearly written, it is a reference text of major importance. The editors have managed to achieve uniformity of style without stif ling the individuality of the various contributing authors. The book will appeal both to surgeons and physicians and must be one of the most complete and all-encompassing works in the field. Besides the stan dard topics, which themselves are dealt with excellently, there are wel come contributions on microbiology, physiology, dermatology as well as on aspects of paediatrics and gynaecology. The reader will find in formed comment on any subject, combined with a current bibliogra phy. More could not be wished from any reference book. John Nicholls London, November 1989 Preface Proctology is no more a minor speciality. Better knowledge of colo-rec to-anal anatomy and of physio-pathology, progress in clinical, imaging and bacteriological investigations have resulted in numerous and more complex therapies.

Download or read book One Welfare in Practice written by Tanya Stephens and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-10-25 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animal welfare has long been recognised as central to the role of the veterinary professional, but this is increasingly aligned with the welfare of humans and the broader environment in which we co-exist. This is the first book dedicated to the role of the veterinarian in One Welfare, a concept that recognises the interconnections between animal welfare, human wellbeing, and the environment. The book demonstrates, through a wide range of international case studies, why professional ethics and the use of good evidence is integral to this role. Contributors bring a rich variety of writings, each with their own perception of the role of the veterinarian in improving animal welfare and human wellbeing. One Welfare in Practice: The Role of the Veterinarian emphasises the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and solutions: it is essential that veterinary practitioners recognise when other professionals or disciplines need to be consulted to benefit both animals and humans. With its multiple, fascinating approaches to One Welfare, this book will inform and inspire the veterinarian to find areas where collaborative action reaps the greatest rewards. This unique book shows how veterinarians can and are contributing to improving animal and human welfare, offering practical advice as to how the profession can further engage in One Welfare in a range of settings.

Book Local Food Systems Concepts Impacts and Issues

Download or read book Local Food Systems Concepts Impacts and Issues written by Steve Martinez and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive overview of local food systems explores alternative definitions of local food, estimates market size and reach, describes the characteristics of local consumers and producers, and examines early indications of the economic and health impacts of local food systems. Defining ¿local¿ based on marketing arrangements, such as farmers selling directly to consumers at regional farmers¿ markets or to schools, is well recognized. Statistics suggest that local food markets account for a small, but growing, share of U.S. agricultural production. For smaller farms, direct marketing to consumers accounts for a higher percentage of their sales than for larger farms. Charts and tables.

Download or read book Fish Diseases written by J. C. Eiras and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 1312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Diseases are a major threat to both wild and farmed fish. Pathogen-induced alterations in viability and growth of wild fish stocks can have implications on diversity and ecological status of aquatic ecosystems, as fish are main components of aquatic communities, and they can directly affect the exploitation of wild and farmed fish as a protein source for human consumption. Fish diseases can be a major factor influencing abundance and distribution of wild fish. Disease-related reduction of reproduction and/or age-specific survival can strongly affect wild stocks as it has been demonstrated for several species in distinct geographical locations."--pub. desc.

Book Bacterial Fish Pathogens

Download or read book Bacterial Fish Pathogens written by Brian Austin and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1993-09-30 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Expanded and updated, this second edition considers fish diseases in the context of the fish's environment, and includes coverage of many aspects of microbiology. The authors provide information on the structure of fish in order to help familiarize readers with general fish anatomy. All the bacterial taxa which have been reported as fish pathogens are included, and the material is subdivided for easy reference into sections which deal with characteristics of the diseases, isolation methods, characterization of the pathogens, diagnosis, epizootilogy, pathogenicity mechanisms and control. Written by bacteriologists for microbiologists, the book tabulates the identification procedures, and gives characteristics of pathogens, the diseases and their control. As farmed fish are of greater commercial importance, and the consequences of losses attributable to bacterial fish pathogens therefore of greater economic consequence, the authors concentrate on these rather than on wild stocks.
