Download or read book The New Social Question written by Pierre Rosanvallon and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2024-04-16 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How social and intellectual changes undermine our justifications for the welfare state The welfare state has come under severe pressure internationally, partly for the well-known reasons of slowing economic growth and declining confidence in the public sector. According to the influential social theorist Pierre Rosanvallon, however, there is also a deeper and less familiar reason for the crisis of the welfare state. He shows here that a fundamental practical and philosophical justification for traditional welfare policies—that all citizens share equal risks—has been undermined by social and intellectual change. If we wish to achieve the goals of social solidarity and civic equality for which the welfare state was founded, Rosanvallon argues, we must radically rethink social programs. Rosanvallon begins by tracing the history of the welfare state and its founding premise that risks, especially the risks of illness and unemployment, are equally distributed and unpredictable. He shows that this idea has become untenable because of economic diversification and advances in statistical and risk analysis. It is truer than ever before—and far more susceptible to analysis—that some individuals will face much greater risks than others because of their jobs and lifestyle choices. Rosanvallon argues that social policies must be more narrowly targeted. And he draws on evidence from around the world, in particular France and the United States, to show that such programs as unemployment insurance and workfare could better reflect individual needs by, for example, making more explicit use of contracts between the providers and receivers of benefits. His arguments have broad implications for welfare programs everywhere and for our understanding of citizenship in modern democracies and economies.

Book A History of Disability

Download or read book A History of Disability written by Henri-Jacques Stiker and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2019-12-09 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book to attempt to provide a framework for analyzing disability through the ages, Henri-Jacques Stiker's now classic A History of Disability traces the history of western cultural responses to disability, from ancient times to the present. The sweep of the volume is broad; from a rereading and reinterpretation of the Oedipus myth to legislation regarding disability, Stiker proposes an analytical history that demonstrates how societies reveal themselves through their attitudes towards disability in unexpected ways. Through this history, Stiker examines a fundamental issue in contemporary Western discourse on disability: the cultural assumption that equality/sameness/similarity is always desired by those in society. He highlights the consequences of such a mindset, illustrating the intolerance of diversity and individualism that arises from placing such importance on equality. Working against this thinking, Stiker argues that difference is not only acceptable, but that it is desirable, and necessary. This new edition of the classic volume features a new foreword by David T. Mitchell and Sharon L. Snyder that assesses the impact of Stiker’s history on Disability Studies and beyond, twenty years after the book’s translation into English. The book will be of interest to scholars of disability, historians, social scientists, cultural anthropologists, and those who are intrigued by the role that culture plays in the development of language and thought surrounding people with disabilities.

Book DESIGNOLOGY A Designer is a Scientist who creates an Emotional Connection between a Brand and its Audiences

Download or read book DESIGNOLOGY A Designer is a Scientist who creates an Emotional Connection between a Brand and its Audiences written by Yasushi Kusume and published by Diplomica Verlag. This book was released on 2016-10 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Design is an essential element of business. It maximises the work of internal and external experts. It brings focus to foresight, ideas to innovation and expression to marketing. In short, it helps companies grow and prosper. Yet many businesses ignore the potential of design. They fail to make full use of the competences and skills designers have to offer. One reason for this is that there is no established academic science of design. This book takes steps to fi ll that gap by offering its own design science – a science called Designology. Designology should embrace a wide range of disciplines, from neuroscience, psychology and sociology to anthropology, ethnology and behavioural science. This book, however, decides to focus on just two of these disciplines – neuroscience and psychology – to demonstrate that design is a science rather than an art, and that designers equipped with the knowledge they offer can provide a credible, expert and, above all, effective contribution to any business. Designology – the science of connecting a brand to ist audience.

Book Ghost of the Rhine

    Book Details:
  • Author : Fred Datig

  • Release : 2009-09-09
  • ISBN : 9781492140634
  • Pages : 478 pages

Download or read book Ghost of the Rhine written by Fred Datig and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2009-09-09 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Don't let the title fool you, because you don't have to believe in ghosts -- "of the Rhine," or otherwise -- to be spirited away into the all-too-real, flesh-and-blood, wartime experiences of this "tell it like it really was" author. Share the innermost feelings of an 18-year-old, "kidnapped" form his upper middle class family, taught to hate through the military's barbaric "Disorganization, Degradation and Dehumanization Program: (his terminology), and sent out by "them" as just another brainwashed sheep to kill and die for "his country." We're not dealing here with simply one more of the myriad "Flat-On-My-Back-At-10,000-Feet," or "Hell-in-a-Foxhole," repetitiously monotonous "war stories" memoirs. This is an adventure involving repeated unusual circumstances in a blitzkrieg of ever-changing scenery and situations, a "4 battle stars in 3 months" action drama bordering on fiction, yet each and every detail believably accurate. You don't have to be military-oriented, or any type of "armchair commando" to find a (male chauvinist pig) place for yourself among these pages. You'll discover circumstances which would've happened to you, personally, had you been there then, and which could still happen to you, even now, with the mere differences of perhaps time, place, and circumstance. As you'll see, none of "us" are invulnerable to the bloodthirsty greed of "them," past, present, or future. Who knows? This down-to-basics recounting of the sometimes-typical, sometimes-unbelievable situations which actually took place, may very well turn out to be a real-life "All Quiet on the Western Front" of the Second World War? . . . As the author dares, "Bite the bullet, take a chance, and find out for yourself!"
