Book excerpt: If you have luckily found yourself with this book in your hands, don't relinquish it until you have read every word (twice) and put it safely in bag to take with you always. These poems do this: they make you want them. As Hughey tells us, "Quivering/ can be much better than flowering." But these poems do both: quiver and flower. Part ancient lullaby and dream, these poems echo Dara Wier, Gertrude Stein, and Frank O'Hara to move into their own space of grand beauty. A space where "Soap bubbles, the ornaments/ of a morning, float in the wait," where you can "Hear the drone of electric razors and feel the explosive thunder from the neighboring screen," where "a sun could have already/ faded." These poems say to you, "Dear travelers with your coins digested by the whirring, /punch the number for what you need. You may get an extra/ if you are open to revelations wrapped in cellophane." Be open to the revelations of Guest Host. They will lead you on your path very well. - Dorothea Lasky The frippery and bricolage of polite culture during war. The obsession with being "seen," as though our lack of privacy had not stripped anything conceivably hidden irrevocably away. Her idea of "entering a new unimportance." Her "Silversmiths, please wake up again and polish us a new anthem." The supple, sharp portraits of women shapeshifting as if still trapped under bell jars. Elizabeth Hughey's Guest Host is a book of our time, and it is frightening and brave. - Gillian Conoley Elizabeth Hughey's Guest Host considers Emily Post on the acid trip of the year 2012, sitting in front of the television or flipping through old photos, and probably reading Leibniz's Monadology. These poems straddle extreme metamorphosis and the nowarchaic certainty about "manners." In other words, Hughey asks (from the middle of the explosion): How are we supposed to be behaving? How is one thing related to another? Her answer, terrifying and utterly believable, is something like: "The way one door sometimes/ opens all of them, we become the same." - Sarah Vap Elizabeth Hughey is the author of Sunday Houses the Sunday House (University of Iowa Press) as well as Guest Host, and an NEA recipient. She is a contributing editor at Bateau Press and a founder of the Desert Island Supply Co., a free creative writing center for kids in the Birmingham area. New poems can be found in American Poetry Review, 27 rue de fleures and the White Whale Review. Elizabeth lives with her husband and two sons in Birmingham, Alabama, where she teaches creative writing and yoga.

  • Author : Nivardus
  • Publisher : BRILL
  • Release : 1987
  • ISBN : 9789004081031
  • Pages : 600 pages

Download or read book Ysengrimus written by Nivardus and published by BRILL. This book was released on 1987 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "Ysengrimus" is the first fully-fledged medieval beast-epic, and the poem in which Reynard the Fox makes his first appearance on the stage of world literature. It thus occupies a key position in the long and fertile tradition of medieval beast-literature, but it also claims attention as a masterpiece in its own right, the work of one of the most daring and original satirists of the Middle Ages. Despite its importance, the "Ysengrimus" has been comparatively neglected because of its linguistic difficulties. Jill Mann eases these difficulties by presenting an English translation alongside the Latin text, and accompanying it with a detailed commentary. A full- length introduction offers an original account of the poem which shows how literary structure and historical dimensions are fused into an original satiric vision of compelling power. This book will not only interest medieval Latin specialists, but will make this major text accessible to those working on the related vernacular traditions. Its analysis of the poem's allusions to contemporary persons and events will also be of considerable interest to historians of twelfth-century Flanders.

Book Host Guest Complex Chemistry Macrocycles

Download or read book Host Guest Complex Chemistry Macrocycles written by F. Vögtle and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scientific and practical interest in coronands (crown ethers), cryptands, podands as complexing agents for cations as well as for anions and neutral low molecular species is undeniable 1,2). The chemistry of crown compounds is steadily increasing. About 250 original papers dealing with crown chemistry appeared only in 1980. New molecules· with crown ether properties are constantly synthesized and new applications discov,?red. Owing to lack of space, only a small number of the original publications is men tioned here. Thus, in the literature compilation only some, but relevant works are selected for each chapter. Whenever possible, reference is made to reviews or review-like articles alone by means of which origin,al works can be consulted. The reviews given under ref. 1) are considered to be the most relevant. The formulae presented in the figures should be understood as representative structures outlining a specific field. 2 Classification of Oligo-/Multidentate Neutral Ligands and of their Complexes Today, a distinction is made between the classical ring oligoethers (crown ethers) and monocyclic coronands, oligocyclic spherical cryptands and the acyclic podands with respect to topological aspects 3). This classification and the topology are illustrated in Fig. 1, each figure representing the minimum number of donor atoms and chain segments characteristic of each class of compounds. Multidentate mono cyclic ligands with any type of donor atoms are called coronands ("crown compounds"), while the term crown ether should be reserved for cyclic oligoethers exclusively containing oxygen as donor atom.

Book excerpt: The book ?tu Vidy? emerged in search of answers to questions asked by adolescent girls and women in India during the author’s interactions with them as part of Menstrual Health workshops, conducted over a span of a decade across rural India. In an attempt to decode menstrual practices, the author undertook a journey across India and studied various indigenous knowledge systems such as ?a?-Dar?ana, ?yurved, Tantra, Cakra, Y?g, ?gama ??stra, Jyotis?a ?a?stra, and several sub-texts from these categories. As a result, the book goes beyond just describing cultural practices and takes a deep dive into explaining the scientific and logical reasoning behind the origin of these practices. This book is for all Indian women who have unanswered questions pertaining to menstrual practices, for menstrual researchers who will find a treasure trove of potential areas for research pertaining to menstrual health, for sportswomen to discover the ancient techniques that worked in sync with women’s periods and not against it, and also for the feminist who assumes that cultural practices around menstruation are a taboo that needs to be done away with. The correct understanding of the science behind menstrual practices, as given in this book, will help women prevent menstrual difficulties, develop a positive attitude toward menstruation, and learn to work in sync with nature’s cycles. ?tu (pronounced as ruthu) is one of the terms for menstruation in Sanskrit. Vidy? means knowledge. ?tu Vidy? is the author’s attempt to bring together various indigenous knowledge systems that provide information about the science of menstruation, which is relevant even to this day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tourism—one of the world's largest industries—has long been appreciated for its economic benefits, but in this volume tourism receives a unique systematic scrutiny as a medium for cultural exchange. Modern developments in technology and industry, together with masterful advertising, have created temporarily leisured people with the desire and the means to travel. They often in turn effect profound cultural change in the places they visit, and the contributors to this work all attend to the impact these "guests" have on their "hosts." In contrast to the dramatic economic transformations, the social repercussions of tourism are subtle and often recognized only by the indigenous peoples themselves and by the anthropologists who have studied them before and after the introduction of tourism. The case studies in Hosts and Guests examine the five types of tourism—historical, cultural, ethnic, environmental, and recreational—and their impact on diverse societies over a broad geographical range

Book Contested Hospitalities in a Time of Migration

Download or read book Contested Hospitalities in a Time of Migration written by Synnøve Bendixsen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-10-28 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the duality of openness and restriction in approaches to migrants in the Nordic countries. As borders have become less permeable to non-Europeans, it presents research on civil society practices that oppose the existing border regimes and examine the values that they express. The volume offers case studies from across the region that demonstrate opposition to increasingly restricted borders and which seek to offer hospitality to migrant. One topic is whether these practices impact and transform the Nordic Protestant trajectory. The book considers whether such actions are indicative of new sensibilities and values in which traditional categories and binaries are becoming less relevant. It also discusses what these practices of hospitality indicate about the changing relationship between voluntary organizations and the Nordic welfare states in the time of migration. As such, it will appeal to scholars of sociology, anthropology, and religious studies with interests in migration, civil society resistance and social values.
