Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The genesis of this book was in 1957 when the author was rejected from a loving courtship because he did not believe in the existence of God. To quell the pain, and to understand what had happened to him, he researched the evidence as to why people believe that God exists. The result was this book, a predominance of evidence in favor of atheism. Further, the author found that truth should always be held provisionally, not permanently, pending discovery of new evidence and insights. For example, the author’s atheism is provisional. His search also brought a tough new world. If God does not exist, we need new concepts for the meaning of life, the basis of morality, and our unalienable Rights to Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. This book offers his solutions to those problems. And one more thing: The author’s recommendation in his final chapter for a new way to search for religious truth forms the most exciting part of this book, and possibly the most prophetic. Now, in 2016, 50 years after it had been offered to the world, and rejected by the publishers as a threat to their own interests, our society has come of age. And this book, with its eye-opening freshness still intact, is finally yours to learn from and to enjoy.

Book Likeness to Truth

    Book Details:
  • Author : G. Oddie
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media

Download or read book Likeness to Truth written by G. Oddie and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of likeness to truth, like that of truth itself, is fundamental to a realist conception of inquiry. To demonstrate this we need only make two rather modest aim of an inquiry, as an inquiry, is realist assumptions: the truth doctrine (that the the truth of some matter) and the progress doctrine (that one false theory may realise this aim better than another). Together these yield the conclusion that a false theory may be more truthlike, or closer to the truth, than another. It is the aim of this book to give a rigorous philosophical analysis of the concept of likeness to truth, and to examine the consequences, some of them no doubt surprising to those who have been unduly impressed by the (admittedly important) true/false dichotomy. Truthlikeness is not only a requirement of a particular philosophical outlook, it is as deeply embedded in common sense as the concept of truth. Everyone seems to be capable of grading various propositions, in different (hypothetical) situations, according to their closeness to the truth in those situations. And (if my experience is anything to go by) there is remarkable unanimity on these pretheoretical judge ments. This is not proof that there is a single coherent concept underlying these judgements. The whole point of engaging in philosophical analysis is to make this claim plausible.

  • Author : Simon Blackburn
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press

Download or read book On Truth written by Simon Blackburn and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-01 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Truth is not just a recent topic of contention. Arguments about it have gone on for centuries. Why is the truth important? Who decides what the truth is? Is there such a thing as objective, eternal truth, or is truth simply a matter of perspective, of linguistic or cultural vantage point? In this concise book Simon Blackburn provides an accessible explanation of what truth is and how we might think about it. The first half of the book details several main approaches to how we should think about, and decide, what is true. These are philosophical theories of truth such as the correspondence theory, the coherence theory, deflationism, and others. He then examines how those approaches relate to truth in several contentious domains: art, ethics, reasoning, religion, and the interpretation of texts. Blackburn's overall message is that truth is often best thought of not as a product or an end point that is 'finally' achieved, but--as the American pragmatist thinkers thought of it--as an ongoing process of inquiry. The result is an accessible and tour through some of the deepest and thorniest questions philosophy has ever tackled
