Book Guelph Mercury Rising

Download or read book Guelph Mercury Rising written by Phil Andrews and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thousands of Guelph Mercury readers looked on with shock and regret when the 149-year-old newspaper produced its final edition on January 29, 2016. The development ended a journalistic tradition that was as old as Canada and one that had produced national and provincial honours for its coverage. Now Phil Andrews, former Managing Editor at the Guelph Mercury, has gathered short fiction from nineteen journalists who worked in the Mercury newsroom over the years, to celebrate the paper's legacy. Former readers of the newspaper and fans of vivid, original fiction should delight in this volume of stories from the journalists who served the Guelph community over the Mercury's long history.

Book Ireland Radicalism and the Scottish Highlands c 1870 1912

Download or read book Ireland Radicalism and the Scottish Highlands c 1870 1912 written by Andrew Newby and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2019-08-06 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the leading figures in radical politics in Ireland and Scottish highlands and explores the links between them. It deals with topics that have been at the centre of recent discussions on the Highland land question, the politics of the Irish community in Scotland, and the development of the labour movement in Scotland. The author argues that the Irish activists in the Scottish Highlands and in urban Scotland should be seen as adherents to notions of social and economic reform, such as land nationalisation, and not as Irish nationalists or Home Rulers. This leads him to make radical reassessments of the contributions of individuals such as John Ferguson, Michael Davitt and Edward McHugh. Andrew Newby looks closely at the political activities and ambitions of the Crofter MPs showing them to be a widely influential but diverse group: he reveals, for example, the extensive links between Angus Sutherland, the most radical of the Highland MPs, and John Ferguson's groupings of Irish political activists of urban Scotland. This is a balanced and vivid account of a turbulent period of modern Scottish history.

In a labour market characterized by the ongoing fallout from COVID-19, deepening income inequality, job instability, and diluted union representation, the living wage movement offers a response and solutions.

Book The War on Smokers and the Rise of the Nanny State

Download or read book The War on Smokers and the Rise of the Nanny State written by Theodore J. King and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009-06 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From propaganda released by the Third Reich to legislation passed in more than fifty nations, smoking is one of society's favorite targets. While the public goes along with persecuting smokers, Theodore J. King is here to tell us why we shouldn't. In this book, which does not advocate smoking, King surveys smoking bans in the United States, England, and Ireland, documenting their effects on society and commerce. King interviews many people, including members of the medical community. King takes his arguments further, showing how and why bans on smoking extend to other areas of our lives-how smokers are only the beginning. Anti-smokers represent an agenda that involves everything from personal property to the way you raise your children, what you eat, and your right to freedom of speech. Authoritarians have willing accomplices in the press and government to take power at the individual's expense. Learn how anti-smoking fanatics use tobacco control as an effective form of social engineering. King offers solutions so that smokers and non-smokers can be accommodated in a free society, where it must never be a crime to smoke in a bar, in a car, in the open air, in a restaurant, or at home.

Book The Tecumsehs of the International Association

Download or read book The Tecumsehs of the International Association written by Brian Martin and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-12-24 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the previously untold story of the London Tecumsehs, an 1870s baseball team that rose to the top ranks of pro ball. The Tecumsehs of London, Ontario, were among the founding members of the International Association in 1877, the first league established to challenge the struggling National League, formed a year earlier. The team played against the top competition of the day and defeated nines from Chicago, St. Louis and elsewhere. They became the first champions of the International Association when they defeated Pittsburgh with the arm of Fred Goldsmith, one of the first curveball pitchers. This is also the story of the International Association, the only one of the six leagues challenging the primacy of the National League that has never been accorded major league status. To this day it has been relegated to minor league status to the detriment of some of the pioneer players in the game.
