Book Politics in Central America

Download or read book Politics in Central America written by Thomas P. Anderson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1988-04-21 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A clear and balanced presentation of the dilemmas associated with each of the four nations. A skillful cultural framework is provided in the first chapter, which serves as an overview. Foreign Affairs A fine study. Anderson's reputation as a scholar and a Latin Americanist will be enhanced when this study has time to make its imprint. American Political Science Review This new volume provides an up-to-date survey of the Central American states involved in the current conflict. While several studies of the individual countries in the region have appeared, there have been no recent attempts at a synthesis of the problems of the area. Politics in Central America fills this gap, analyzing the roots of the current crisis and suggesting solutions to the problems of the region. The author's chief assertion is that the roots of the problems in Central America are not to be found in the East-West struggle but in the competition within each country for control of the scarce natural resources. This crisis in Central America calls for drastic and economic changes. The key question, Anderson claims, is whether or not these changes can be brought about within a democratic framework.

Book Becoming a Good Neighbor among Dictators

Download or read book Becoming a Good Neighbor among Dictators written by Jorrit van den Berk and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-12-28 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Very few works of history, if any, delve into the daily interactions of U.S. Foreign Service members in Latin America during the era of Roosevelt’s Good Neighbor Policy. But as Jorrit van den Berk argues, the encounters between these rank-and-file diplomats and local officials reveal the complexities, procedures, intrigues, and shifting alliances that characterized the precarious balance of U.S. foreign relations with right-wing dictatorial regimes. Using accounts from twenty-two ministers and ambassadors, Becoming a Good Neighbor among Dictators is a careful, sophisticated account of how the U.S. Foreign Service implemented ever-changing State Department directives from the 1930s through the Second World War and early Cold War, and in so doing, transformed the U.S.-Central American relationship. How did Foreign Service officers translate broad policy guidelines into local realities? Could the U.S. fight dictatorships in Europe while simultaneously collaborating with dictators in Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras? What role did diplomats play in the standoff between democratic and authoritarian forces? In investigating these questions, Van den Berk draws new conclusions about the political culture of the Foreign Service, its position between Washington policymakers and local actors, and the consequences of foreign intervention.

Book After the Revolution

Download or read book After the Revolution written by Ilja A. Luciak and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2003-05-01 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How women active in guerilla movements become active in politics after the war. Complements Bayard de Volo's Mothers, Heroes, Martyrs:Gender Identity Politics in Nicaragua, 1979–1999. "Gender equality and meaningful democratization are inextricably linked," writes Ilja Luciak. "The democratization of Central America requires the full incorporation of women as voters, candidates, and office holders." In After the Revolution: Gender and Democracy in El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Guatemala, Luciak shows how former guerrilla women in three Central American countries made the transition from insurgents to mainstream political players in the democratization process. Examining the role of women in the various stages of revolutionary and national politics, Luciak begins with women as participants and leaders in guerrilla movements. Women contributed greatly to the revolutionary struggle in all three countries, but thereafter many similarities ended. In Guatemala, ideological disputes reduced women's political effectiveness at both the intra-party and national levels. In Nicaragua, although women's rights became a secondary issue for the revolutionary party, women were nonetheless able to put the issue on the national agenda. In El Salvador, women took leading roles in the revolutionary party and were able to incorporate women's rights into a broad reform agenda. Luciak cautions that while active measures to advance the political role of women have strengthened formal gender equality, only the joint efforts of both sexes can lead to a successful transformation of society based on democratic governance and substantive gender equality.

Book Development of Railroads in Guatemala and El Salvador 1849 1929

Download or read book Development of Railroads in Guatemala and El Salvador 1849 1929 written by Delmer G. Ross and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study deals with the planning, construction, and early operation of the railroad network of these two Central American nations. The network was unique in Central America because the majority of it was eventually taken over, completed, and operated by International Railways of Central America, a subsidiary of an American concern, the United Fruit company. This book explains in considerable detail how all of this occurred, from the first few miles of track to the completion of the final international network link. Based on a mix of primary and secondary sources, published and unpublished, the narrative notes how progressive thinkers saw railroads as a way to improve the economies of the nations involved.
