Book Guardians of the Goal

Download or read book Guardians of the Goal written by George Grimm and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2019-10-01 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A history of Rangers goalies through the ages! New York Rangers fans have always loved their goaltenders and, throughout their history, the Blueshirts have been blessed with some of the very best in the game. Through the first nine-plus decades of their existence, eighty-eight men from Canada, the United States, and Europe have toiled between the pipes at Madison Square Garden. They all shared the same responsibility, yet each brought their own style, personality, character, and idiosyncrasies to the position and provided unique memories for those of us who watched them. In Guardians of the Goal, each one of these brave men is discussed in chronological order, while providing an overview of their era and the general managers and coaches they played for. Such players highlighted in this book include: · Mike Richter · Ed Giacomin · John Vanbiesbrouck · Henrik Lundqvist · Davey Kerr · And many more. Regardless of whether they were a franchise goalie, a flash in the pan, or an emergency fill-in, each of these “Lone Rangers,” or as Steve Baker once called them, “The few, the proud, and the very busy,” have one thing in common: they all tried their best to keep that little one-inch by three-inch piece of frozen, vulcanized rubber out of the gaping twenty-four square foot chasm behind them. Some were more successful than others, but as you will see, although they may occasionally “steal” a game, in most cases a goaltender is only as good as the team in front of him. Guardians of the Goal is just that: an ode to those Blueshirts who laid it out night in and night out, leaving it all out on the ice for our Rangers.

Book New Guardians for the Golden Gate

Download or read book New Guardians for the Golden Gate written by Amy Meyer and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-12-22 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National parks are a distinctively American idea. But it takes people to make them happen. This unique, insider's account tells how Bay Area activists forged bipartisan local and national support for an unprecedented campaign to create a great new national park. In 1970, beginning with the former Army lands originally reserved to protect San Francisco Bay, the grassroots People for a Golden Gate National Recreation Area succeeded in preserving all of the spectacular land that frames the Golden Gate. Spanning more than thirty eventful years, Amy Meyer tells the story of how dedicated citizens, including visionary conservationist Edgar Wayburn, master politician Phillip Burton, and a battalion of lesser-known but key allies made our democratic system work for the common good and won their fight to save these dramatic and historic lands for all of the American people. Pictures by noted California photographers capture the park’s grandeur and new activities. New Guardians for the Golden Gate tells how a bold vision, dedicated citizens, and a variety of old and new conservation strategies saved these magnificent lands for all time.

Download or read book Guardians of Empire written by Brian McAllister Linn and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2000-11-09 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a comprehensive study of four decades of military policy, Brian McAllister Linn offers the first detailed history of the U.S. Army in Hawaii and the Philippines between 1902 and 1940. Most accounts focus on the months preceding the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. By examining the years prior to the outbreak of war, Linn provides a new perspective on the complex evolution of events in the Pacific. Exhaustively researched, Guardians of Empire traces the development of U.S. defense policy in the region, concentrating on strategy, tactics, internal security, relations with local communities, and military technology. Linn challenges earlier studies which argue that army officers either ignored or denigrated the Japanese threat and remained unprepared for war. He demonstrates instead that from 1907 onward military commanders in both Washington and the Pacific were vividly aware of the danger, that they developed a series of plans to avert it, and that they in fact identified--even if they could not solve--many of the problems that would become tragically apparent on 7 December 1941.

Book Indian Games and Dances with Native Songs

Download or read book Indian Games and Dances with Native Songs written by Alice Cunningham Fletcher and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One day Alice C. Fletcher realized that "unlike my Indian friends, I was an alien, a stranger in my native land." But while living with the Indians and pursuing her ethnological studies she felt that "the plants, the trees, the clouds and all things had become vocal with human hopes, fears, and supplications." This famous statement comes directly from the preface of this book and was later etched on her tombstone. "I have arranged these dances and games with native songs in order that our young people may recognize, enjoy and share in the spirit of the olden life upon this continent, " she wrote. Indian Games and Dances with Native Songs is a collection that conveys the pleasure and meaning of music and play and rhythmic movement for American Indians. Many of the activities here described are adapted from ceremonials and sports. Included is a "drama in five dances" celebrating the life of corn. "Calling the Flowers" is an appeal to spirits dwelling underground to join the dancers. Still another dramatic dance, with accompanying songs, petitions clouds to leave the sky. The Festival of Joy, an ancient Omaha ceremony, is centered on a sacred tree. In the second part Indian ball games and games of hazard and guessing are set forth, as well as the popular hoop and javelin game. Fletcher closes with a section on Indian names. Alice C. Fletcher, the foremost woman anthropologist in the United States in the nineteenth century, is also the author, with Francis La Flesche, of A Study of Omaha Indian Music and the two-volume Omaha Tribe. Both titles are available as Bison Books. Helen Myers is the coauthor of Folk Music in the United States: An Introduction.

Download or read book Guardians Without Wings written by Robert Fertig and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2012-03 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a true story about how the system of justice works to protect America's children, with the essential support of thousands of volunteers, Guardian ad Litem (GALs), also known as Court Appointed Special Advocates. We call them "Guardians without Wings." We have found the lack of proper education, the influence of secularism, and especially, poor moral upbringing, represent the fundamental causes of child abandonment, neglect and abuse. More than 75% of Americans claim to be Judeo-Christians at the beginning of this century. Our Constitution and Bill of Rights are based on Christian principles, yet many have discarded these values that are the foundation of our society. We believe that all children are born innocent and lovable! It is the parents, relatives, role models, peer group pressure, secular (and atheistic) teachers, and mainly the "culture of death", that have caused too many of these children to grow up to become dysfunctional adults, and in many cases, appalling parents. What do we mean by "culture of death" in western society? It is our growing divorce rates (over 52%); Abortion-On-Demand (50 million so far) and rise of Euthanasia; Unmarried Parents, who lack responsibility for their children; and the epidemic of illegal drug addiction problem. Some parents are clueless about the essentials of parenting. They are immature adults themselves. As one Judge said, "they are like rabbits that keep on reproducing." Should these "adults" have children, if they are morally, and psychologically unable to be loving, caring parents? You can't love, if you have not been loved as a child. The lack of spiritual formation (Jewish, Christian, among other faiths) was predominant in about 80-85% of our cases, and that represents one of the most important reasons for the breakdown of social order in our society. Conversely, we must be very careful to avoid extreme fundamentalists that will actually create further issues for our children. "If we have full employment and great economic growth ... but our children have not learned to walk in goodness, justice and mercy, then the American experiment ... will have failed." William Bennett
