Most existing analyses of this process explain the “Spanish Miracle” as a product of the unleashing of market forces and of changes in economic policy made by the Franco regime in the 1950s. Political Economy of the Spanish Miracle provides an alternative explanation of Spanish economic development, analyzing the Miracle from an interdisciplinary political economy perspective that treats capitalist growth as a complex and dynamic interaction between capitalists, workers and the state. The Spanish Miracle is linked to changes in Spanish society produced by the Spanish Civil War, to the class structure of the regime brought to power by that Civil War and to the interaction between domestic social struggles under the Franco regime and Spain’s insertion into the international political economy of the Cold War capitalist world. Ambitious in scope, Political Economy of the Spanish Miracle both revises conventional understandings of Spanish economic growth and situates Spain within comparative discussions of development in the twentieth century. A la par, y por el hecho de reconstruir este proceso en un espacio reducido -una ciudad- aunque sumamente significativo -Madrid-, el autor propone un modelo de interpretación de las luchas de clases urbanas durante la 11 República que, más allá de sus determinantes políticos, tenga en cuenta el propio desarrollo de la ciudad, las transformaciones de su estructura, los procesos migratorios, la crisis que afectó a sus principales industrias, el tipo de sus organizaciones obreras y patronales y, en fin, la dinámica de los discursos y las prácticas de clase. De acuerdo con esos presupuestos metodológicos, el libro concede una atención especial a la fiesta como momento fundante de la República para desembocar, tras el análisis de la cristalización de conciencias enfrentadas de clase, en el estudio de las diferentes formas de lucha de los dos sindicatos obreros y las distintas agrupaciones patronales. El “pueblo todo entero” que aparece como sujeto del primer capítulo del libro se convertirá, durante este corto y denso proceso, en el “frente obrero” y el “bloque patronal” que aparecen radicalmente enfrentados en su última parte. Santos Juliá es profesor del Departamento de Ciencias Políticas y Sociología de la UNED. Ha publicado, en diversas revistas y obras colectivas, una veintena de artículos sobre temas relacionados con la II República y es autor de La izquierda del, PSOE, 1935-36 y de Orígenes del Frente Popular en España, aparecidos en esta misma editorial.

Establishing businesses in Germany, Britain, France, Austria, and Italy the family soon became leading financiers, bankrolling a host of private and government businesses ventures. In so doing they played a major role in fuelling economic and industrial development across Europe, providing capital for major projects, particularly in the mining and railway sectors. Nowhere was this more apparent than in Spain, where for more than a century the House of Rothschild was one of the primary motors of Spanish economic development. Yet, despite the undoubted importance of the Rothschild's role, questions still remain regarding the actual impact of these financial activities and the effect they had on financial sectors, companies and Spanish markets. It is to such questions that this book turns its attention, utilising a host of archive sources in Britain, France and Spain to fully analyse the investments and financial activities carried out by the Rothschild House in Spain during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In so doing the book tackles a variety of interrelated issues: Firstly, fixing the period when the main capital entries sprung from the initiatives taken by the Rothschild family, how consequential they really were, and the sectors they affected. Secondly, quantifying the importance of these investments and financial activities and the weight they had on financial sectors, companies and Spanish markets, as well as in foreign investment in each period. Thirdly, outlining the steps followed and means used by the Rothschild House in order to achieve the success in each of their businesses. Finally, analysing the consequences of this phenomenon in the actual growth of Spanish contemporary economy, both in a general and in a partial scale. By exploring these crucial questions, not only do we learn much more about the working of one of the leading financial institutions and the development of the Spanish economy, but a greater understanding of the broader impact of international finance and the flow of capital in the nineteenth century is achieved.
