Book Ghosts of Colonies Past and Present

Download or read book Ghosts of Colonies Past and Present written by Mary L. Coffey and published by . This book was released on 2020-09-30 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ghosts of Colonies Past and Present is the first comprehensive examination of how the literary production of Benito Prez Galds, widely considered Spain's greatest nineteenth-century novelist, addresses the impact of imperial loss on the citizens of Spain. Well before the events that would lead inexorably toward 1898, Galds's texts question the nature of Spanish imperialism and the effect of colonial history on the lives of metropolitan citizens. Methodologically framed by trauma studies, affect studies and the concept of the imperial turn, a close reading of the texts reveals Galds's preoccupation with explaining not only how Spain lost its vast territories in the Americas in the early part of the century but also how Spanish citizens could manage the trauma of that loss through a reconfiguration of national identity. His novels reveal the deeply entwined nature of colonial relations and how Spain attempted to process the trauma of imperial loss. Moreover, by recognizing that this process extended across the nineteenth century, it becomes clear that Spain's engagement with European cultural and literary movements was, contrary to the assumptions of European imperialism, neither slow nor imitative but rather illustrative of the nation's unique position on the cusp of the historical shift to the postcolonial present.

Book excerpt: Seven-year-old Maxim lives with his mother and identical twin sister in Moscow's Yasenevo district. Though he is perturbed by his parents' divorce, nothing could prepare his family for the young boy's transformation as he enters adolescence. His increasingly horrifying physical shape, strange behaviour at school, refusal to wash and hoarding of houseflies are just some of the developments that alarm his now-alienated mother and sister. Only when his diary is discovered does the sinister and wholly unexpected truth behind his metamorphosis from boy to monster come to light. The characters in this and the other stories in Anna Starobinets' acclaimed first collection inhabit a disturbing modern Russia. Drawing the reader in to an eerie world, Starobinets blurs the boundaries between the real and the imagined, filtering sinister occurrences through the narratives of unstable minds. Her unsettling imaginative territory and the simplicity of her prose have drawn comparisons of Starobinets' work with that of authors as varied as Kafka and Stephen King. An Awkward Age is a haunting and beautiful evocation of a society entering a new phase of its history, and an example of contemporary fiction at its finest.

Book A Sociable God

  • Author : Ken Wilber
  • Publisher : Shambhala Publications
  • Release : 2005-02-22
  • ISBN : 0834822946
  • Pages : 190 pages

Download or read book A Sociable God written by Ken Wilber and published by Shambhala Publications. This book was released on 2005-02-22 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In one of the first attempts to bring an integral dimension to sociology, Ken Wilber introduces a system of reliable methods by which to make testable judgments of the authenticity of any religious movement. A Sociable God is a concise work based on Wilber's "spectrum of consciousness" theory, which views individual and cultural development as an evolutionary continuum. Here he focuses primarily on worldviews (archaic, magic, mythic, mental, psychic, subtle, causal, nondual) and evaluates various cultural and religious movements on a scale ranging from egocentric to ethnocentric to worldcentric to Kosmic. By using this integral view, Wilber hopes, society would be able to discriminate between dangerous cults and authentic spiritual paths. In addition, he points out why these distinctions are crucial in understanding spiritual experiences and altered states of consciousness. In a lengthy new introduction, the author brings the reader up to date on his latest integral thinking and concludes that, for the succinct and elegant way it argues for a sociology of depth, A Sociable God remains a clarion call for a greater sociology.

Book Advanced High Dynamic Range Imaging

Download or read book Advanced High Dynamic Range Imaging written by Francesco Banterle and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2011-02-10 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imaging techniques seek to simulate the array of light that reaches our eyes to provide the illusion of sensing scenes directly. Both photography and computer graphics deal with the generation of images. Both disciplines have to cope with the high dynamic range in the energy of visible light that human eyes can sense. Traditionally photography and computer graphics took different approaches to the high dynamic range problem. Work over the last ten years though has unified these disciplines and created powerful new tools for the creation of complex, compelling and realistic images. This book provides a practical introduction to the emerging new discipline of high dynamic range imaging that combines photography and computer graphics. By providing detailed equations and code, the book gives the reader the tools needed to experiment with new techniques for creating compelling images. A supplemental website contains downloads and additional information.
