To understand immigration in its early stages, this book takes a historical approach that focuses on diversities that go beyond nationality. It explores local yet international phenomena such as different patterns of return migration, transnational community and familial relationships, and niche labour markets. The book takes a broad interdisciplinary perspective, drawing on sociology, anthropology, history, sociolinguistics, literature, and education, to provide a detailed case study analysis. While the case is specific, many other geographic regions will share some of the factors the book explores. Understanding how these factors interact will provide a useful point of contrast for analysing them in a range of other international contexts.

This work is based on rich qualitative data from in-depth interviews, focus groups and participant observation complemented by a substantial documentary and legislative analysis. It reveals that current policies are limited and migrants are excluded in most of the formal venues for integration. In addition, the book shows the many ways that migrants negotiate the constraints and imperatives of integration. In Western Europe today, immigrants are largely assuming the entire responsibility of their integration. This book provides readers with much needed insight into why European integration policies are not responding to the needs of immigrants nor to society as a whole.

The statistical analysis is very important to understand how identity theories work in Spanish society. Indeed, social identities within the Spanish society are homogeneous, dialectical, and confrontational. Therefore, answers of respondents on immigration-crime link are necessarily homogeneous, dialectical and confrontational. Hence the paradox “on falseness and inevitability”.

The book’s main hypothesis is that contemporary art has been pivotal in the construction of contemporary Iberia, a process marked by the attention paid (in heterogeneous, not always satisfactory ways) to the entanglement of the legacies of colonialism and the present-day status of Iberian territories as cosmopolitan societies now integrated in the European Union. We argue that, at least from the 1990s, curating emerged as a key activity for Iberian societies to display and configure an image of themselves as modern and fully integrated in the European cultural landscape. Such an image, however, had to cope with the legacies of colonialism and the profound socioeconomic transformations of these societies. This book is concerned with bringing together, while redefining and expanding, Iberian and curatorial studies.

To a certain degree, this observation is correct in the sense that a global mass culture is certainly being disseminated an sold all over the plane. But the world is at the same time increasingly diversified in terms of ethno-cultura identities. The tension between the trend toward cultural uniformity and the trend toward differentiation of identities is well captured by observing the evolution of social dynamics in cities. Most medium-sized and large European cities are today increasingly fragmented socially, economically and ethnically. Some of them are even becoming socially, ethnically an racially ghettoised. But at the same time, European cities remain places where intergroup encounters con develop and where cultural production takes place. The cities are the crossroads between the local and the global. The first aim of this book is to discuss the changes affecting the city and the role played by cultural diversity and ethno-national identities in those changes. The second aim is to examine some crucial issues and aspects of the current process of cultural diversification of cities and its impact on urban socio-economic, political and cultural activities.

Trata de las diversas formas de marginación, según los modos de ser, modos de actuar o modos de pensar de los individuos estudiados, donde no están todos los grupos marginales sino solo una muestra, no circunscritos al-Andalus sino a otras poblaciones y regiones del Islam. La primera de estas secciones se refiere a los que sufrieron algún tipo de privación o personalidades estigmatizadas: pobres, homosexuales, eunucos¿ Los autores de los artículos prestan atención al tema de la construcción de la identidad cultural, a través de la dialéctica de la inclusión o exclusión en un conjunto de individuos u otro. En la segunda, los artículos versan sobre los diversos modos de comportamiento que, en cierto momento, ocasionaron críticas por parte de los autores de obras. Los individuos considerados aquí transgresores de las normas son con mucha frecuencia ciudadanos perfectamente integrados en los grupos sociales y su rechazo puede estar condicionado por factores diversos, temporales o parciales., sufriendo en ocasiones por desobediencia a la ley sagrada, crítica, marginación o condena. La tercera sección se ocupa de los distintos grupos pertenecientes a las élites intelectuales que, por sus creencias o por la práctica de una determinada doctrina son considerados diferentes por las fuentes o por ellos mismos. Se encuentran aquí individuos que se autodiferencian, y se autoexcluyen por una valoración positiva por lo general de sí mismos (filósofos, etc.), considerándose incomprendidos e infravalorados por el resto de la sociedad, al estimarse superiores de manera excepcional.
