Book Sweeping Forward

Download or read book Sweeping Forward written by Frederick A. Johnsen and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Aircraft design, more than many other disciplines, exemplifies the phrase 'form follows function.' The laws of physics demand it. Aeronautical designers have always reached forward, stretching capabilities as far as the constraints of gravity and the limits of materials would allow their genius to probe. The emerging computer flight control and composite structures revolutions of the 1970s promised designers access to a hitherto impossible dream: a forward swept wing (FSW) fighter with enhanced maneuverability and efficiency. The benefits of forward swept wings have long been understood. Both forward and aft swept wings yield significant drag reduction in the transonic speed range. Since air flows inboard on forward swept wings, unlike the outboard flow on traditionally swept wings, the forward swept wings' tips remain unstalled at higher angles of attack, retaining maneuverability and controllability. The X-29 was an unusual aircraft with a truly unique silhouette. Excerpt: The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is a supersonic, twin-engine, two-seat, variable-sweep wing fighter aircraft. The Tomcat was developed for United States Navy's Naval Fighter Experimental (VFX) program following the collapse of the F-111B project. The F-14 was the first of the American teen-series fighters which were designed incorporating the experience of air combat against MiGs during the Vietnam War. The F-14 first flew in December 1970. It first deployed in 1974 with the U.S. Navy aboard USS Enterprise (CVN-65), replacing the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II. The F-14 served as the U.S. Navy's primary maritime air superiority fighter, fleet defense interceptor and tactical reconnaissance platform. In the 1990s it added the Low Altitude Navigation and Targeting Infrared for Night (LANTIRN) pod system and began performing precision strike missions. The F-14 was retired from the active U.S. Navy fleet on 22 September 2006, having been replaced by the Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet. As of 2009, ..

Book Grumman F9F 6 7 8 Cougar

Download or read book Grumman F9F 6 7 8 Cougar written by Corky Meyer and published by Consign. This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contract for the new Grumman Cougar (G-93) was signed on March 2, 1951. The first flight of the XF9F-6 Cougar was on September 20, 1951. When Grumman and the Navy first discussed the Panther, both parties were privy to the Navy Technical Team findings in German WW-II research immediately after the war and the fact that many of the top German fighter designers had "migrated" to our new enemy, Russia. This information put firm emphasis on the greater critical Mach number with the swept wing over a convention straight-wing fighter for both the U.S. and the USSR.
