Book Marine Fighter Pilot at the Jugular of the Solomons

This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Could an unobtrusive, skinny, bookish teacher who loves classical music and poetry become a fighter pilot in one of the bloodiest theaters of war our country has known? Could this modest self-described dreamer become the pilot of a Corsair F4U, the fastest plane built—equipped with six menacing, Browning .50 caliber machine guns, a primitive navigation system and a 16-cylinder engine so powerful that it could spin the plane over and crash if accelerated too fast? How far did Wally Thomson, the teacher, travel to become Captain Wallace B. Thomson the war hero of his hometown, Hackensack, New Jersey? In this memoir, Wally describes vivid wartime details that are often insightful, humorous or critical to a life or death decision. He also stands back to provide context for his role in the war effort, describing some of the most relevant battles preceding his arrival in the Pacific. And he reflects on some of the strategies, tactics, mistakes and successes of the Allies and the Japanese while he explains the tasks at hand—flying a powerful aircraft to carry out his missions, leading his men to attack the enemy and to survive to fly another day. Through his telling, we recognize the friendships, fears, romance, humor and the courage he witnessed in the Pacific. Wally’s is just one of the remarkable stories about the countless ordinary men and women who were asked to act in extraordinary ways during World War II. But each story is unique and each one deserves telling. This is Wally’s story—the story of Captain Wallace B. Thomson, a Marine Pilot at the Jugular of the Solomons.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An epic achievement over one hundred years in the making... In December 1941, Japan had perhaps the greatest combination of land, sea, and air forces the world had ever seen, and she used these to conquer a huge empire in the Western Pacific and East Asia. Yet by August 1945, Japan had been beaten to her knees by the combined power of China, Great Britain, and the United States. Was this destruction inevitable? Did Japan have no chance to defeat America and her allies? Why would she think she could successfully battle the two greatest industrial powers the world had ever known—Great Britain and the United States—at the same time? Violet Lightning: A Blueprint for Japanese Victory in the Pacific, 1941–1942 is a sweeping narrative over a century in the making. From the first confrontation in 1895 between the United States and Japan over Hawaii; to the massive Japanese defeats at Midway and Guadalcanal in 1942; to author John Eric Vining’s first interest in the Japanese-American conflict in the fall of 1967 by reading Carrier War in the Pacific; to the fall of 1995 when Vining first put pen to paper on this project; and finally, to 2020’s finished product by Page Publishing, Vining reviews a history of the acrimony between Japan and the United States in the first half of the Twentieth Century. He then builds what one reviewer calls a “chillingly believable” scenario for a Japanese victory in the greatest of all wars. Violet Lightning poses and answers the question: “Could Japan really have pulled it off?” You just might find yourself coming around to a point of view you didn’t believe was possible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most successful naval fighter aircraft in history, the Grumman F6F Hellcat accounted for nearly 5200 kills during WWII. The Hellcat featured self-sealing fuel tanks, a bullet- resistant windscreen, and hydraulically-operated landing gear. The plane was rugged, and carried over 200 pounds of armor. Despite this, it was highly maneuverable and fast, thanks to a 2000 hp engine. Nearly 12,300 F6Fs were made during the war. They first saw action during the Tarawa invasion, and subsequently flew in every battle of the Pacific campaign. Hellcats accounted for nearly 75% of all aircraft kills in the Pacific. Originally created by the U.S. Navy, this flight operating manual taught pilot's everything they needed to know before entering the cockpit. It's a wonderful guide to one of history's great planes. Please note, this manual has been slightly reformatted and some color diagrams appear in black and white. Care has been taken to preserve the integrity of the text.

Book Grumman XF5F 1 XP 50 Skyrocket

Download or read book Grumman XF5F 1 XP 50 Skyrocket written by David Lucabaugh and published by Ginter Books. This book was released on 1995-05-01 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All of the comic book reading public during the 1940's followed the adventures of "Blackhawk" and his mighty men as they conquered the world of evil. Those of us with a mindbent toward things aeronautical knew that it was not "Superman" or "Batman" who held the keys to a crime-free society, bring on "Blackhawk." Dressed in daring dark uniforms, the dashing figures of this 1940's version of the "A-Team" were mounted on the very latest of aircraft. Through the paint brush the artist portrayed an entire squadron of snub-nosed twin engine fighters which those of us old enough to remember know that only a single actual aircraft existed for the artist to illustrate, the Grumman XF5F-1 Skyrocket.

Book Grumman F 14 Tomcat in US Navy Service

Download or read book Grumman F 14 Tomcat in US Navy Service written by Salvador Mafe Huertas and published by . This book was released on 2021-04-17 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The F-14 Tomcat is more than just a naval plane, it has marked an era in the same way that aircraft like the F-4 Phantom II, the different models of the mythical Mirage, the F-86 Sabre, the P-51 Mustang, and the Spitfire did. The uniqueness of its mission and having a single user (in addition to Iran) were not an obstacle for this exceptional fighter to gain respect and a reputation that few fighter planes have had throughout the twentieth century.

Book excerpt: The Grumman FF, even if it is not particularly well known, is important in that it was the start a long dynasty of carrier-based fighters for the USN which included the famous WW2 Hellcat, the Panther and Cougar of the Korean War and the F-14 Tomcat of the Cold War era. It was also the first USN fighter to use a retractable landing gear. The full history of this two-seat fighter, of which less than 30 examples were produced, is narrated in 40 pages. Its career as a fighter was short with only one front line USN unit operating it for just three years. However it had a longer career as a fighter trainer and was not withdrawn from use until 1942. Each aircraft history is fully documented and the publication is illustrated by over 30 photographs and 11 color profiles. This is a good reference for historians and modelers alike.
