Book excerpt: Donald Olding Hebb, referred to by American Psychologist as one of "the 20th century's most eminent and influential theorists in the realm of brain function and behavior," contributes greatly to the understanding of mind and thought in Essays on Mind. His objective was to learn about thought which he considered "the central problem of psychology -- but also, not less important, to learn how to think clearly about thought, which is philosophy." The volume is written for advanced undergraduates, graduates, professionals, and lay people interested in or studying the mind. Hebb offers an increased understanding of the mind from a biological perspective that affects long-standing philosophical and psychological problems. "Psychology and Philosophy were divorced some time ago but, like other divorced couples, they still have problems in common," writes Hebb. The first three chapters establish the methodological and philosophical basis for his biologically centered theory of behavior, including the evolution of the mind, nature versus nurture, the origination and status of cell-assembly theory, and infant thought and language development. He concludes with a discussion of the workings of scientific thought from a practical rather than theoretical perspective.

Following capture, John finishes the war in a Berlin prisoner of war camp. He realises that the enemy has saved his life, even though he is in an appalling physical and psychological condition. On his return home, his family is forced to re-assess their own interpretations of the enemy and the traumatic impact of war. In poor health, John asks his girlfriend Ada to marry him and enlists her help to write secret letters to his German rescuer. The consequences of their actions are explored in the closing stages of the novel when John’s divided family is obliged to meet the ‘enemy’.This is a story about a small group of characters of different ages set against the very difficult circumstances and actual events of 1918 and 1919. The two youngest members of the Brownleader family, Hannah and George, see the unfolding situations in a very different way to their parents, elder siblings and the other adults. Hannah is a pivotal character and her greatest wish is for someone to read her a story from her favourite Wonder Tales. Two Trees contains elements of affection, laughter, courage, antagonism and personal challenge as well as an examination of individual motivation, empathy and family rivalry. It is a story about the human spirit and how a bond between two ‘enemy’ soldiers is created amongst the carnage and mayhem of the Western Front which nobody at home can really understand. The book will appeal to fans of hisorical and war fiction.

Book excerpt: I remember the things I felt at that bar in the mountains. The music was over... Some songs played on the Jukebox. The tears welled within me. The dusty road outside... I had my whole life ahead of me, a vision of the indescribable future. Tears fell within. Mountain life was different, but it fit me. A ship set sail on a lonely river. What was love anyway? Complicated. There was no one that could hurt me again I imagined. Just scars. Scars and a desire to make something out of my life. My cabin was just a shadow in the night. And I was supposed to believe I didn't know Jesus? I poured shots and beers that night to the locals. Some who had hearts and some whose hearts had escaped them. I'll never forget the songs that played on the Jukebox. The moon cast weary shadows, and eyes met eyes in the smoky bar. Smoke rising. All I could think of was having a fire for myself in my shell of a cabin outside, by the river. A river that always ran...
