Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Growth of the Church in Buganda: An Attempt at Understanding I am deeply grateful to the many Africans who gave generously of their time and hospitality to help me towards understanding. To select only a few names would be invidious, but I cannot forbear to mention one, Brusoni Wandera, who for four months put himself unreservedly at my disposal and offered me an unstinting friendship. Dr A. I. Richards, then of the East African Institute of Social Re search, and now at Newnham College, Cambridge, gave me the benefit of her wide experience, and later read through my manuscript and made a number of stimulating suggestions. Dr Lloyd A. F allers, who was then the head of the East African Institute of Social Research, gave both guidance and encouragement, and Mr Anthony Low of Makerere College shared most generously his expert knowledge of the history of Uganda. I am indebted to Mr John Goldthorpe, also of Makerere College, for permitting me to be present at a number of student seminars. My thanks are specially due to the Bishop of Uganda, the Rt. Rev. Leslie Brown, and to the Diocesan Council, for their invitation to the International Missionary Council to conduct the study, in the first instance, and for the welcome and encouragement they extended to me personally. Miss Ferrier, the librarian, and Miss Belcher, the archivist, at the headquarters of the Church Missionary Society, responded to my request for help with a readiness and patience which gave an added pleasure to that part of the work. I particularly wish to thank Mr H. B. Thomas for his most valuable help. He read through my first draft, correcting and polishing with meticulous care, and finally offered to see my manuscript through the press, in my own absence from Great Britain. For such unsolicited kindness from one who has already filled his retirement with more activity than most younger men would care to undertake there are no words that can adequately express my gratitude. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historically, studies of the church in Africa have tended to focus on church history or church-state relations, but in this publication David Zac Niringiye presents a study of the Church of Uganda focused on its ecclesiology. Niringiye examines several formative periods for the Church of Uganda during concurrent chronological political eras characterized by varying degrees of socio-political turbulence, highlighting how the social context impacted the church’s self-expression. The author’s methodology and insight sets this work apart as an excellent reflection on the Ugandan church and brings scholarly attention to previously ignored topics that hold great value to society, the church, and the academic community globally.

Book The Contribution of the Christian Churches to the Development of Western Uganda 1894 1974

Download or read book The Contribution of the Christian Churches to the Development of Western Uganda 1894 1974 written by Deogratias M. Byabazaire and published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften. This book was released on 1979 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christian Churches, especially in the Third World, are reconsidering and planning their responsibility in contemporary society. This has become necessary since some of the traditional ideas on the mission of the Church have become inadequate in modern and developing nations. The Churches are emphasizing that their task is mainly that of service to society. This service is to society as a whole and must have the betterment of this society as its goal. In fulfilling this purpose, the Churches must therefore plan their strategy by first examining and evaluating the role they have played in the spiritual, social, economic and political progress. This study has been done in this light.

Book The Oxford History of Anglicanism Volume V

Download or read book The Oxford History of Anglicanism Volume V written by William L. Sachs and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford History of Anglicanism provides a global study of Anglicanism from the sixteenth century to the twenty-first. The five volumes in the series look at how Anglican identity was constructed and contested since the English Reformation of the sixteenth century, and examine its historical influence during the past six centuries. They consider not only the ecclesiastical and theological aspects of global Anglicanism, but also the political, social, economic, and cultural influences of this form of Christianity that has been historically significant in Western culture, and a burgeoning force in non-Western societies since the nineteenth century. Written by international experts in their various historical fields, each volumes analyses the varieties of Anglicanism that have emerged. The series also highlights the formal, political, institutional, and ecclesiastical forces that have shaped a global Anglicanism; and the interaction of Anglicanism with informal and external influences which have both moulded Anglicanism and been fashioned by it. Volume five of The Oxford History of Anglicanism considers the global experience of the Church of England in mission and in the transitions of its mission Churches towards autonomy in the twentieth century. The Church developed institutionally, yet more than the institutional history of the Church of England and its spheres of influence is probed. The contributors focus on what it has meant to be Anglican in diverse contexts. What spread from England was not simply a religious institution but the religious tradition it intended to implant. The volume addresses questions of the conduct of mission, its intended and unintended consequences. It offers important insights on what decolonization meant for Anglicans as the mission Church in various global locations became self-reliant. This study breaks new ground in describing the emergence of an Anglicanism shaped more contextually than externally. It illustrates how Anglicanism became enculturated across a broad swath of cultural contexts. The influence of context, and the challenge of adaption to it, framed Anglicanism's twentieth-century experience.
