Book Effects of Oxygen on the Growth Characteristics of Carbon Nanotubes on Conductive Substrates

Download or read book Effects of Oxygen on the Growth Characteristics of Carbon Nanotubes on Conductive Substrates written by Ryan K. Bonaparte and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of oxygen on Fe-catalyzed carbon nanotube (CNT) growth on Ta substrates was studied. CNTs were grown on Fe thin-film catalysts deposited on silicon substrates via exposure to C2H4 in a thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD) furnace. Heating for CVD growth causes the Fe film to dewet to form catalyst particles. During CVD, the sample was exposed to gas mixtures of Ar, Ar/O2, H2, and C2H4. Experiments were performed with varying amounts of oxygen from mixing of the Ar and Ar/O2 carrier gas, as well as pre-annealing samples in oxygen or hydrogen-rich environments. Samples were characterized via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). It was found that when an optimum amount of oxygen was introduced, taller CNT carpets were observed. Pre-annealing samples in an oxygenrich environment shows additional benefits in carpet growth. In contrast, pre-annealing in a hydrogen-rich environment counteracts the benefits of introducing oxygen during the growth phase. Coarsening of the catalyst particles was suspected as a reason for the difference in growth patterns, and pre-annealed sample morphologies were characterized without C2H4 flow. AFM scans show apparent coarsening in samples exposed to hydrogen-rich environments, and reduced coarsening in the samples exposed to oxygen-rich environments.

Book Perspective of Carbon Nanotubes

Download or read book Perspective of Carbon Nanotubes written by Hosam El-Din Saleh and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2019-12-11 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carbon nanotubes belong to new nanomaterials and have been known for almost 20 years, but their history is somewhat lengthier. They have been identified as promising candidates for various applications.High-temperature preparation techniques are conventional techniques for the synthesis of carbon nanotubes using arc discharge or laser ablation, but today these methods are being replaced by low-temperature vapor deposition techniques, since orientation, alignment, nanotube length, diameter, purity, and density of carbon nanotubes can be precisely controlled. The synthesis of carbon nanotubes by chemical vapor deposition on catalyst arrays leads to nanotube models grown from specific sites on surfaces. The controlled synthesis of nanotubes opens up interesting possibilities in nanoscience and nanotechnologies, including electrical, mechanical and electromechanical properties and devices, chemical functionalization, surface chemistry and photochemistry, molecular sensors, and interfacing with moderate biological systems.Carbon nanotubes are used in many applications due to their unique electrical, mechanical, optical, thermal, and other properties. Conductive and high-strength composite materials, energy saving and energy conversion devices, sensors, visualization of field emissions and sources of radiation, means for storing hydrogen, and nanoscale semiconductor devices, probes, and interconnections are some of the many applications of carbon nanotubes.

Book Thin Film Deposition and Carbon Nanotube Synthesis

Download or read book Thin Film Deposition and Carbon Nanotube Synthesis written by Jerome Frey and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are a viable product for many different markets, one of which is energy development due to its unique properties related to electrical conductivity. One specific area of promise is the use of vertically aligned CNT's in supercapacitors. The CNT synthesis is a two-step process with the first being the formation of a thin film layer. The thin film substrate is created by means of the Thermal Evaporation Physical Vapor Deposition (TPVD) process and is performed within a high vacuum chamber. The layer deposit is monitored by a quartz crystal microbalance. The nanoparticle thin film substrate, ranging in thickness, is synthesized using a transition metal which acts as the nucleation points for CNT growth. After the thin film substrate is deposited, the CNT's are grown in a Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) chamber. Analysis of the thin film substrate and CNTs is performed primarily using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The measurements of the nanoparticles' diameters and CNTs' dimensions are carried out by image analysis program ImageJ. The results show the inclusion of ultrapure water in the CVD process contributed to the success of CNT growth. The CNT formation differs between silver thin film deposited on silicon substrate and iron thin film deposited on alumina (Al2O3) substrate. The focus of this thesis project is to explore and investigate different materials and conditions for optimal CNT synthesis in the hopes of creating a uniform forest of vertically aligned carbon nanotubes.

Download or read book PRODUCTION OF CARBON NANOTUBES BY CHEMICAL VAPOR DEPOSITION written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT PRODUCTION OF CARBON NANOTUBES BY CHEMICAL VAPOR DEPOSITION Ayhan, Umut Barýþ M.S., Department of Chemical Engineering Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Güngör Gündüz Co-Supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Burhanettin Çiçek July 2004, 75 pages Carbon nanotubes, which is one of the most attractive research subject for scientists, was synthesized by two different methods: Chemical vapor deposition (CVD), a known method for nanotube growth, and electron beam (e-beam), a new method which was used for the first time for the catalytic growth of carbon nanotubes. In both of the methods, iron catalyst coated silica substrates were used for the carbon nanotube growth, that were prepared by the Sol-Gel technique using aqueous solution of Iron (III) nitrate and tetraethoxysilane. The catalytic substrates were then calcined at 450 °C under vacuum and iron was reduced at 500°C under a flow of nitrogen and hydrogen. In CVD method the decomposition of acetylene gas was achieved at 600 °C and 750 °C and the carbon was deposited on the iron catalysts for nanotube growth. However, in e-beam method the decomposition of acetylene was achieved by applying pulsed high voltage on the gas and the carbon deposition on the silica substrate were done. The samples from both of the methods were characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Raman spectroscopy techniques. TEM images and Raman spectra of the samples show that carbon nanotube growth has been achieved in both of the method. In TEM characterization, all nanotubes were found to be multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) and no single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) were pictured. However, the Raman spectra show that there are also SWNTs in some of the samples.

Book Growth of High Quality Carbon Nanotubes on Free Standing Diamond Substrates

Download or read book Growth of High Quality Carbon Nanotubes on Free Standing Diamond Substrates written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were grown on diamond-coated Si substrates and free-standing diamond wafers to develop efficient thermal interface materials for thermal management applications. High quality, translucent, free-standing diamond substrates were processed in a 5 kW microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition (CVD) system using CH4 as precursor. Ni and Ni-9%W-1.5% Fe catalyst islands were deposited to nucleate CNTs directly onto the diamond substrates. Randomly-oriented multi-walled CNTs forming a mat of tilde 5 micrometers thickness and consisting of tilde 20 nm diameter tubes were observed to grow in a thermal CVD system using C(2)H(2) as precursor. Transmission electron microscopy and Raman analyses confirmed the presence of high quality CNTs on diamond showing a D/G peak ratio of 0.2-0.3 in Raman spectra.
