This book was released on 1994 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Root morphology and developmental anatomy of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L. cv. Acala SJ-2) was studied for seedlings grown under control conditions and at several levels of NaCl salinity. In control plants, primary root elongation rates presented an accceleration phase followed by a deceleration phase. Salinity did not change this pattern, but delayed growth and reduced peak growth rates in a way that suggests a change in the developmental time scale due to salinity. Lateral root growth was more inhibited than primary root growth, pointing to diverse control mechanisms for these root types. Light exposure of the shoot favored both lateral root development and the sustained primary root growth from 7 days after planting. Salinity effects were more severe on seedlings grown in hydroponics than on vermiculite-grown plants.

Download or read book Germination of two cotton Gossypium Hirsutum L Cultivars with various salt and temperature treatments written by Mario Augusto P. da Cunha CUNHA and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seed of Deltapine 16 and hopicala cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) were tested under laboratory conditions in 1968 for germination salt tolerance with sodium-, calcium-, and magnesium chloride alone and in the tri-salt combination using two temperatures at the University of Arizona, Tucson. Beginning the fourth day, germination counts were continued daily through the 12th day. A seed was considered germinated when the total length of the epicotyl and root were 5 cm or more. Seed of the cultivars tested differed in their ability to germinate in saline solutions. Deltapine 16 was more salt tolerant than Hopicale. The types of salts did not differentially affect seed germination. The rate of germination decreased qith increased salt concentration. Temperatures differentially affected the rate of germination. Low temperature retarded germination compared to high temperature. Significant interactions of the first and second order indicated that seed of both cultivars did not germinate similarly at the both cultivars did not germinate similarly at the various salt concentrations under different temperatures. The rate of germination of both cultivars was reduced at the low temperature treatment compared to the high temperature. Also, increasing salinith delayed seed germination. Retardation of seed germination with increasing salinity was more severe at the low temperature treatment than at the high temperature. Also, increasing salinity delayed seed germination. Retardation of seed germination with increasing salinity was more severe at the low temperature treatment than at high temperature.

Download or read book Salinity Environment Plants Molecules written by André Läuchli and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-05-08 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In biology, the very big global and thevery small molecular issues currently appear to be in the limelight ofpublic interest and research funding policies. They are in danger of drifting apart from each other. They apply very coarse and very fine scaling, respectively, but coherence is lost when the various intermediate levels of different scales are neglected. Regarding SALINITY we are clearly dealing with a global problem, which due to progressing salinization of arable land is of vital interest for society. Explanations and basic understanding as well as solutions and remedies may finally lie at the molecular level. It is a general approach in science to look for understanding of any system under study at the next finer (or "lower") level of scaling. This in itself shows that we need a whole ladder of levels with increasingly finer steps from the global impact to the molecular bases of SALINITY relations. It is in this vein that the 22 chapters of this book aim at providing an integrated view of SALINITY.
