Book excerpt: Excerpt from Growth in Length: Embryological Essays The three Lectures forming the first part of this book were given as one of the "Advanced Courses in Zoology" in the University of London. They were delivered at Guy's Hospital on January23 rd, January 30th and February 6th, 1913, under the title "The Growth in Length of the Vertebrate Embryo." They are now published in accordance with the known intention of the author, and in response to the expressed wish of some of those who heard them. Although my husband had destined this work for publication, he had not actually prepared it for the press; but the Lectures were typewritten and some corrections and notes had been added. to them. For help in arranging them for print I am greatly indebted to Professor Stanley Gardiner, F.R.S., and to Professor J. P. Hill, F.R.S., who have most kindly read the mss; and to the latter especially for valuable suggestions as to some alterations in the original wording, which while adapted for lecturing purposes might not always have been clear to the reader. The figures have been drawn by Miss D. Thursby-Pelham from the sketches given in the MSS referring to lantern slides and diagrams displayed during the lectures. The cost of publication is partly defrayed by a grant from the Royal Society. The second part of the book consists of a reprint of a paper on the Mechanics of Gastrulation which appeared in the Archiv fur Entwicklungsmechanik der Organismen in 1910. It is here included as the subject is kindred to that of the lectures and also because it is often in demand and further copies are unobtainable. Book The Rise of Fetal and Neonatal Physiology

Download or read book The Rise of Fetal and Neonatal Physiology written by Lawrence D. Longo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-02-01 with total page 879 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition offers an expanded and updated history of the field of fetal and neonatal development, allowing readers to gain a comprehensive understanding of the biological aspects that contribute to the wellbeing or pathophysiology of newborns. In this concluding opus of a long and prominent career as a clinical scientist, Dr. Longo has invited new contributions from noted colleagues with expertise in various fields to provide a historical perspective on the impact of how modern concepts emerged in the field of fetal physiology and contributed to the current attention paid to the fetal origins of diseases in adults. In addition to new chapters on maternal physiology and complications during pregnancy, others trace the history of the Society for Reproductive Investigation, governmental funding of perinatal research, and major initiatives to support training in the new discipline of maternal fetal medicine, including the Reproductive Scientist Development program. The extensive survey provided by the author, who personally knew most of the pioneers in the field, offers a unique guide for all clinical and basic scientists interested in the history of – and future approaches to diagnosing and treating – pathologies that represent the leading causes of neonatal mortality and, far too often, life-long morbidity.

Download or read book On Growth and Form written by D'Arcy Wentworth Thompson and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-11-21 with total page 661 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Growth and Form is a scholarly work by D'Arcy Wentworth Thompson. Thompson was a Scottish biologist, mathematician, classics scholar and a pioneer of mathematical biology. Excerpt: "Of the chemistry of his day and generation, Kant declared that it was "a science, but not science,"—"eine Wissenschaft, aber nicht Wissenschaft"; for that the criterion of physical science lay in its relation to mathematics. And a hundred years later Du Bois Reymond, profound student of the many sciences on which physiology is based, recalled and reiterated the old saying, declaring that chemistry would only reach the rank of science, in the high and strict sense, when it should be found possible to explain chemical reactions in the light of their causal relation to the velocities, tensions and conditions of equilibrium of the component molecules; that, in short, the chemistry of the future must deal with molecular mechanics, by the methods and in the strict language of mathematics, as the astronomy of Newton and Laplace dealt with the stars in their courses. We know how great a step has been made towards this distant and once hopeless goal, as Kant defined it, since van't Hoff laid the firm foundations of a mathematical chemistry, and earned his proud epitaph, Physicam chemiae adiunxit."
