Book Growth and Mortality of Ponderosa Pine Poles Thinned to Various Densities in the Blue Mountains of Oregon Classic Reprint

Download or read book Growth and Mortality of Ponderosa Pine Poles Thinned to Various Densities in the Blue Mountains of Oregon Classic Reprint written by P. H. Cochran and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-10 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Growth and Mortality of Ponderosa Pine Poles Thinned to Various Densities in the Blue Mountains of Oregon These 24-year results for the levels-of - growing-stock installation on the Malheur National Forest in Oregon include five measurement periods, four having five grow ing seasons and one having four growing seasons. Stand conditions, plant asso elations, and soils similar to the study area occur over much of the Blue Mountains in northeastern Oregon and southeastern Washington as well as elsewhere in the intermountain West. Results of this study, therefore, should be applicable over a wide area. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Growth of Planted Ponderosa Pine Thinned to Different Stocking Levels in Northern California

Download or read book Growth of Planted Ponderosa Pine Thinned to Different Stocking Levels in Northern California written by William W. Oliver and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growth was strongly related to growing stock level (GSL) for 5 years after thinning 20-year-old poles on Site Index50 115 land at the Elliot Ranch Plantation in northern California. Five GSL's- basal areas anticipated when trees average 10 inches d. b. h. or more - ranging from 40 to 160 square feet per acre were tested. Periodic annual increment (PAI) in diameter decreased curvilinearly from 0.51 to 0.21 inch, with increasing GSL's from 40 to 160. But only trees in plots heavily thinned to GSL 40 (and briefly in GSL 70) grew faster in diameter after thinning than these same trees grew before thinning. PAI in basal area and net volume rose steadily with increasing GSL9s, reaching 9.0 square feet and 255 cubic feet per acre, respectively, at GSL 160. Apparently, even light thinning reduced volume production, but thinning still is recommended to shorten time until first commercial entry and to promote stand health.

Book Fifteen year Growth Patterns After Thinning a Ponderosa Jeffrey Pine Plantation in Northeastern California

Download or read book Fifteen year Growth Patterns After Thinning a Ponderosa Jeffrey Pine Plantation in Northeastern California written by William W. Oliver and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growth was analyzed after one thinning in a plantation of pole-size ponderosa and Jeffrey pines on land having a site index of 50 feet at 50 years. Periodic annual increment was determined for each of three 5-year periods. On this basis, increment in diameter and cubic volume were found to he related closely to stand basal area only. Basal area and height increment, however, were also related to time since thinning: basal area growth decreased and height growth increased with each succeeding period. The optimum basal area for volume production (both cubic and board-foot measures) was estimated to be 110 ft2/acre. Optimum stocking levels and resulting stand performance are predicted for a common thinning practice.

Book Growth of Ponderosa Pine Stands in Relation to Mountain Pine Beetle Susceptibility

Download or read book Growth of Ponderosa Pine Stands in Relation to Mountain Pine Beetle Susceptibility written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ten-year diameter and basal area growth were determined for partially cut stands at 4 locations. Average diameters in the partially cut plots generally increased by 1 inch or more, while average diameter in the uncut controls increased by 0.9 inches or less. Individual tree growth is discussed in relation to potential susceptibility to mountain pine beetle infestation. Basal area increases ranged from 0.9 to 1.9 ft2/acre/ yr in partially cut plots, while basal area increases in the control plots ranged from 0.4 to 1.4 ft2/acre/yr. Endemic mountain pine beetle infestations and snow breakage accounted for most of the mortality on the plots, which decreased the residual basal area and basal area growth. Increases in basal area are used to estimate the length of time required for various stand densities to reach the susceptibility thresholds for mountain pine beetle infestation. Stand marking may influence future susceptibility to beetle infestations.
