Book Instability in Indian Agriculture in the Context of the New Technology

Download or read book Instability in Indian Agriculture in the Context of the New Technology written by Shakuntla Mehra and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 1981-01-01 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extract: This report analyzes the processes that might result in more or less instability of yields for individual crops; for the same crop produced in different regions and in different seasons in the same region; for foodgrains generally in different regions of the country; or for farms of different sizes. Because the new crop technology has made an important contribution to the growth of yields per hectare, and because the new technology itself has made the greatest headway in irrigated areas, the obvious question is: has seed-fertilizer technology increased yield variability, and, if so, has this added variability been confined only to unirrigated areas?

Book Agricultural Growth Rural Poverty and Environmental Degradation in India

Download or read book Agricultural Growth Rural Poverty and Environmental Degradation in India written by C. H. Hanumantha Rao and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1994 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his study of the poverty alleviation programmes, the author finds that even though the poorest of the poor are relatively efficient in utilizing the assistance they receive, the schemes themselves are heavily dependent on the bureaucracy, leading to inefficiencies and leakages. Environmental degradation is attributed to the slow rate of land-augmenting technological change and the inequitable distribution of gains resulting in pressure on the environment from the poor as well as the affluent. On account of the low rate of capital formation and relatively efficient use of available resources, the author sees little scope for raising agricultural output in India merely by freeing the markets. On the basis of his study, Dr Rao recommends stepping up public investment in agriculture, especially in irrigation and research, as essential to raise the growth rate, and to realize the possible gains from trade as well as to ensure the equitable sharing of such gains.
