Book Growth and Characterization of Bismuth Tri iodide Single Crystals by Modified Vertical Bridgman Method

Download or read book Growth and Characterization of Bismuth Tri iodide Single Crystals by Modified Vertical Bridgman Method written by Wei Qiu and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Bismuth tri-iodide (BiI3) is a wide band gap semiconductor material with potential for room temperature gamma-ray detection applications. The inability to produce high quality, pure, and large single crystals is one of the major challenges for this material preventing its use in gamma-ray detection. This work presents the growth and characterization of BiI3 single crystals by a modified vertical Bridgman (MVB) method. The growth parameters to produce BiI3 single crystals were explored by adjusting growth rate and temperature gradient at the solid-liquid interface. Single crystals of BiI3 have been successfully grown in Pyrex glass ampoule at different growth conditions. Through etch pit density (EPD) and X-ray rocking curve measurement, the crystal with the best quality was determined to be obtained at 0.5 mm/h growth rate and 10oC/cm temperature gradient. Single crystal (001) oriented slabs up to 18 x 13 x 5 mm3 (the largest BiI3 single crystal ever reported) were obtained under this condition. Impurity characterization on the starting BiI3 powder and the grown crystals indicated a relatively high total impurity concentration up to 1017 cm-3, and the crystal growth using Pyrex glass does not introduce additional impurities to the crystal.

Book Growth and Characterization of Isotopically Enriched 7 Ge and 74Ge Single Crystals

Download or read book Growth and Characterization of Isotopically Enriched 7 Ge and 74Ge Single Crystals written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Isotopically enriched 7°Ge and 74Ge single crystals were successfully gown by a newly developed vertical Bridgman method. The system allows us to reliably grow high purity Ge single crystals of approximately 1 cm3 volume. To our knowledge, we have grown the first 7°Ge single crystal. The electrically active chemical impurity concentration for both crystals was found to be (approximately)2 x cm−3 which is two order of magnitude better that of 74Ge crystals previously grown by two different groups. Isotopic enrichment of the 7°Ge and the 74Ge crystals is 96.3% and 96.8%, respectively. The residual chemical impurities present in both crystals were identified as phosphorus, copper, aluminum, and indium. A wide variety of experiments which take advantage of the isotopic purity of our crystals are discussed.

Book Crystal Growth and Characterization

Download or read book Crystal Growth and Characterization written by R. Ezhil Vizhi and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent years have witnessed a great upswing in the development of new crystals. Over the past few decades, the advancement in science and technology has made single crystals indispensable for the development of new generation devices. Nearly-perfect crystals of nonlinear optics and ferroelectric materials are needed for optoelectronics, microprocessors, photonics, memories and crystals of all kinds which are required for scientific studies and new applications. Hence, there is always a continuous search for new and efficient materials. In this research we have investigated the growth and physical properties of four crystals viz. two NLO and two ferroelectric crystals. Single crystals of a new NLO material DGT and GZS are grown by slow cooling technique for the first time. GPI, TUGPI and AGPI single crystals grown in the solution growth technique have been discussed. Tri Glycine Barium Nitrate (TGBN) is studied recently in terms of its NLO and ferroelectric properties. The grown crystals were subjected to structural, optical, thermal and mechanical characterization studies. The general conclusions are given along with possible future work that could be performed on these crystals.

Book Crystal Growth Technology

Download or read book Crystal Growth Technology written by Kullaiah Byrappa and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2003-03-21 with total page 613 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crystals are the unacknowledged pillars of modern technology. The modern technological developments depend greatly on the availability of suitable single crystals, whether it is for lasers, semiconductors, magnetic devices, optical devices, superconductors, telecommunication, etc. In spite of great technological advancements in the recent years, we are still in the early stage with respect to the growth of several important crystals such as diamond, silicon carbide, PZT, gallium nitride, and so on. Unless the science of growing these crystals is understood precisely, it is impossible to grow them as large single crystals to be applied in modern industry. This book deals with almost all the modern crystal growth techniques that have been adopted, including appropriate case studies. Since there has been no other book published to cover the subject after the Handbook of Crystal Growth, Eds. DTJ Hurle, published during 1993-1995, this book will fill the existing gap for its readers. The book begins with ""Growth Histories of Mineral Crystals"" by the most senior expert in this field, Professor Ichiro Sunagawa. The next chapter reviews recent developments in the theory of crystal growth, which is equally important before moving on to actual techniques. After the first two fundamental chapters, the book covers other topics like the recent progress in quartz growth, diamond growth, silicon carbide single crystals, PZT crystals, nonlinear optical crystals, solid state laser crystals, gemstones, high melting oxides like lithium niobates, hydroxyapatite, GaAs by molecular beam epitaxy, superconducting crystals, morphology control, and more. For the first time, the crystal growth modeling has been discussed in detail with reference to PZT and SiC crystals.
