Book excerpt: From the renowned psychologist who introduced the world to “growth mindset” comes this updated edition of the million-copy bestseller—featuring transformative insights into redefining success, building lifelong resilience, and supercharging self-improvement. “Through clever research studies and engaging writing, Dweck illuminates how our beliefs about our capabilities exert tremendous influence on how we learn and which paths we take in life.”—Bill Gates, GatesNotes “It’s not always the people who start out the smartest who end up the smartest.” After decades of research, world-renowned Stanford University psychologist Carol S. Dweck, Ph.D., discovered a simple but groundbreaking idea: the power of mindset. In this brilliant book, she shows how success in school, work, sports, the arts, and almost every area of human endeavor can be dramatically influenced by how we think about our talents and abilities. People with a fixed mindset—those who believe that abilities are fixed—are less likely to flourish than those with a growth mindset—those who believe that abilities can be developed. Mindset reveals how great parents, teachers, managers, and athletes can put this idea to use to foster outstanding accomplishment. In this edition, Dweck offers new insights into her now famous and broadly embraced concept. She introduces a phenomenon she calls false growth mindset and guides people toward adopting a deeper, truer growth mindset. She also expands the mindset concept beyond the individual, applying it to the cultures of groups and organizations. With the right mindset, you can motivate those you lead, teach, and love—to transform their lives and your own.

Book G Is for Growing

Download or read book G Is for Growing written by Shalom M. Fisch and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-08 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume--a collection and synthesis of key research studies since the program's inception over three decades ago--serves as a marker of the significant role that Sesame Street plays in the education and socialization of young children. Editors Shalom M. Fisch and Rosemarie T. Truglio have included contributions from both academics and researchers directly associated with Sesame Street, creating a resource that describes the processes by which educational content and research are integrated into production, reviews major studies on the impact of Sesame Street on children, and examines the extension of Sesame Street into other cultures and media. In the course of this discussion, the volume also explores broader topics, including methodological issues in conducting media-based research with young children, the longitudinal impact of preschoolers' viewing of educational versus non-educational television, and crosscultural differences in the treatment of educational content. As the first substantive book on Sesame Street research in more than two decades, "G" is for Growing provides insight into the research process that has informed the development of the program and offers valuable guidelines for the integration of research into future educational endeavors. Intended for readers in media studies, children and the media, developmental studies, and education, this work is an exceptional chronicle of the growth and processes behind what is arguably the most influential program in children's educational television.

Book Our Wisdom Years

Download or read book Our Wisdom Years written by Charles Garfield and published by Central Recovery Press. This book was released on 2020-06-02 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychologist and best-selling author Charles Garfield shares an uplifting vision as he takes us on a journey of a lifetime. Some of the most profound growth of our lives can happen in the home stretch, the years after age sixty or so. It’s a time when we can finally crystallize the meaning of what we’ve been and done and fully expand into the self we’ve always intended to be. But, says psychologist Charles Garfield, that can only happen if we first loosen the grip of the life we’ve led so far, the one that’s been focused outwardly—on activity, achievement, and the idea of success—and let our souls lead the way. In Our Wisdom Years, Dr. Garfield skillfully and practically guides readers through nine tasks that can transform the struggles of aging, bringing fulfillment, joy, and serenity. Drawing on the understandings that come from both his work as acclaimed “success guru” in the 1980s and the truths distilled from volunteering with those at the end of life, Garfield offers a fresh, uplifting vision of the wholeness that awaits us. Dr. Garfield shares how we can gracefully let go of the younger selves we’ve been and walk through the opening that keeps beckoning toward this soul-driven version of later life. He encourages us to take the risk of being fully alive as our years pass. This is no small task—aging is not for the faint of heart! The beautiful paradox of growing older is that none of the gifts of age are available without the kind of loss that forces us to confront mortality in a way we can’t deny. In the face of loss, we’re changed and expanded by truths that come from the heart, not the mind. We learn that we’re more than our bodies, part of something much larger than we are, and that love and kindness matter most of all.

Book Music to My Years

Download or read book Music to My Years written by Cristela Alonzo and published by Atria Books. This book was released on 2019-10-08 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this memoir full of humor and heart, comedian, writer, and producer Cristela Alonzo shares personal stories of growing up as a first-generation Mexican-American in Texas and following her dreams to pursue a career in comedy. When Cristela Alonzo and her family lived as squatters in an abandoned diner, they only had two luxuries: a television and a radio, which became her pop cultural touchstone and a guiding light. Cristela shares her experiences and struggles of being a first-generation American, her dreams of becoming a comedian, and how it feels to be a creator in a world that often minimizes people of color and women. Her stories range from the ridiculous—like the time she made her own tap shoes out of bottle caps or how the theme song of The Golden Girls landed her in the principal’s office—to the sobering moments, like how she turned to stand-up comedy to grieve the heartbreaking loss of her mother and how, years later, she’s committed to giving back to the community that helped make her. Each significant moment of the book relates to a song, and the resulting playlist is deeply moving, resonant, and unforgettable. Music to My Years will make you laugh, cry, and even inspire you to make a playlist of your own.

Book The Growing Years of the Catholic India and the Special Contribution of NBCLC and Fr Amalorpavadas to the Catholic Biblical Movement

Download or read book The Growing Years of the Catholic India and the Special Contribution of NBCLC and Fr Amalorpavadas to the Catholic Biblical Movement written by Antony Christy Lourdunathan and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2018-04-11 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2013 in the subject Theology - Biblical Theology, , course: Biblical Catechesis, language: English, abstract: Christianity is not merely a set of religious principles; it is a covenant in the same lines of the covenant of the People of Israel for whom the Decalogue, the principles of their life, was a Testament. In a similar fashion, for a Christian, the Holy Bible is the Testament of one’s covenant with Christ and the Abba whom He revealed, in the Holy Spirit. Rightly are its two parts called, the Old and the New ‘Testaments’. Bible is the foundation of the faith experience of an individual who professes to be a Christian and it is in itself the faith expression of generations of people whose faith the individual makes one’s own. However, the place of this testament today, within the faith expression of an individual or the community has undergone a long process of evolution in history. Within the Christian community of the original times, it was merely used by the elders or the priests during worship. Later it was used by those persons who sought to teach and guide the communities and individuals to instruct them from the examples and the teachings of the people who were originally instruments of the faith experience recorded in the Scriptures. Further later, it was considered a privilege to hold the Scriptures and read or proclaim from it. There was a moment in history in which the community of faith felt the need to assert that the Scriptures originated from the community (which was trying to record the foundational experiences), for the community (so that the community of faithful could find their ground in those experiences) and that the Scriptures should go back to the hands of the community and not remain merely in the hands of a select few. This feeling and conviction gave rise to a movement in history towards making the Bible the most important factor within the ambit of making sense of one’s faith and its expressions in life and worship.
