Book excerpt: Ohferdumb is a compilation of stories and pictures about growing up in a large family on a farm in northern Minnesota. "Ohferdumb" is a term that our mother affectionately used when one of the seven kids did something dumb, which was not uncommon. Our father died at the young age of 40 from an unexpected heart attack. My mom, at age 36, had to take over the day-to-day running of the farm while raising three girls and four boys. Growing up in a rural community, one had to create their own fun and often there were significant risks involved. These stories and pictures will help the reader get an inside look at what life was like in a small rural farming community in the 50s and 60s.

Book My Four Friends

Download or read book My Four Friends written by Joe McGraw and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2007-11 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a day when farm folks pitched in together to accomplish tasks too big for one person, when strangers shared car rides, and housewives lingered over cups of hot coffee, a small boy named Joe discovered the richness of life on his grandfather's farm. A gentle, adventurous, and proud boy enraptured by farm life, Joe learned at a tender age that he had a way with animals, both domestic and wild. On Grandpa's farm, he became fast friends with a dog, a deer, a rabbit, and even a blue jay. His feathered and furry companions seemed to understand him just as perfectly as he did them. Their many carefree escapades included hunting woodchucks, visiting the barbershop, playing in the schoolyard, riding in the rumble seat of Grandpa's coupe, fishing in the creek, eating spaghetti lunches at the county fair, and much more. A memoir from the heart, this is the spirited tale of a young boy coming of age in a bygone era as he makes lasting memories and enduring friendships exploring field and forest with a bevy of animal buddies.

Book Roots in the Land

Download or read book Roots in the Land written by Doug Brosseau and published by First Edition Design eBook Publishing. This book was released on 2015-08-11 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written from the perspective of the boy and only son, the author recalls many, many of his experiences growing up on a small, family-owned, farm in southwestern Minnesota. The setting primarily spans the turbulent decades of the 1960s and early 1970s. Many memories, stories, anecdotes, detailed and vivid descriptions, and imagery are preserved for the enjoyment of family, friends, and those generations of readers who are curious about what life was really like on the small farm in the "old days." This life experience bestowed the author with the famous Midwestern Work Ethic and a set of values that were important in later life. The story is not "sugar-coated" but honest and faithful regarding the realities of farm life as experienced in those days. Finally, the author provides an excellent narrative of the forces and influences that led to his decision to leave the farm and to explore new places, new relationships, and new and exciting experiences. About the Author -: Doug Brosseau was born and raised on a small, family-owned, dairy, chicken, hog and cash crop farm in southwestern Minnesota. After making the difficult decision to leave the farm, he enrolled in and obtained a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Minnesota. Doug's early life on the farm taught him both a strong work ethic as well as a growing and maturing environmental ethic and love of the natural world. While he pursued his engineering career in a number of states, Doug immersed himself in nature and travel experiences. Early travels in the Minnesota Boundary Waters Canoe Area led to many, many more lake excursions in northern Minnesota, as well as river trips on both quiet-water and white-water canoe outings in both Minnesota and Wisconsin. He also enjoyed simple forms of tent camping while on bicycling, motorcycling and river trips throughout those areas. In his mid-twenties, Doug felt compelled to explore the western United States while he was still young and healthy. This drive to see and experience led to a three-month hiking and backpacking trip in 1979 to many of the most remote and majestic wilderness areas of the West. That lengthy introduction to wild places led to a life-long pursuit of backpacking, day hiking, and walking among nature's wonders. In 1982, Doug also planned and took another trip completely around the United States, this time on motorcycle. Pulling an unheard-of (at that time) utility trailer behind a small Yamaha 650, he successfully toured most of the United States on a memorable 20,000-mile journey of discovery. Doug has lived and worked in the Albuquerque, New Mexico area for over thirty years. Together with his wife of twelve years, Doug continues to enjoy hours of walking and hiking and a simple lifestyle. keywords: Minnesota, Farm, Family, Stories, Work, Play, Ethic, Experiences, Values, Roots

Book If You Leave This Farm

Download or read book If You Leave This Farm written by Amanda Farmer and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2014-07-25 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a teenage Mennonite girl, Amanda lives with her close-knit family in south central Pennsylvania. Life revolves around hard work, faith, and commitment to the family. She doesnt question the daily routine; its the only life shes known. Her father talks about buying a farm out west with a lot of land in one block. Not only will the family farm there together, but the parents hope to begin a new Mennonite community. To a fifteen-year-old girl, this move begins as an exciting adventure. In If You leave this Farm, Amanda shares the story of her familys relocation to Minnesota and the subsequent challenges they face as farmers, a family, and Mennonites. She tells how the first crop year was a huge failure and her father alone makes the decision to expand the new dairy in an attempt to recoup the losses. This memoir chronicles the years of struggle as Amanda and her younger brother Joseph seek to escape their fathers suffocating and controlling behavior. Intermingled with the struggle on the farm is the effort to become an accepted member of the Minnesota Mennonite community. The change in Amandas fathers behavior and attitude during the first years in Minnesota alienates him and his family from others of the same faith. She shares a mix of emotions as she wrestles with the shame of her familys standing with the Mennonites and the crushing weight of constant submission to her fathers misguided use of his God-given authority.
