Book Growing Up Moonta

Download or read book Growing Up Moonta written by Kristin Weidenbach and published by . This book was released on 2017-11 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the best-selling author of Mailman of the Birdsville Track comes the memoir of an Australian country town entwined with four generations of family history. Told through the childhood reminiscences of Weidenbach father, Neil, Growing up Moonta paints a picture of a time when an illegitimate child was raised as a sister to her mother, travelling salesmen made a living hawking dressmakers' pins and bottles of antiseptic salve, and boys grew to men lumping bags of wheat and tending engines in the town power houses of the 1930s. Young Neil and his forebears absorbed the quirky anecdotes of South Australia's famous coppermining town -- from the infamous murders and the boys who went to war, to the rhythms of everyday life such as the butcher carving meat at the back of his horse and cart, and the women competing on Mondays to hang their washing on the line first. Growing up Moonta transports readers to a time not so long ago, but a way of life long passed; a place redolent with nostalgia that lives on in the stories of our parents and grandparents. 'I revelled in this history of the town: a book teeming with characters and incident...The world might be a global village, but a village has always contained a whole world of stories.' -- Peter Goldsworthy Listen to ABC Podcast 'Conversations with Richard Fidler and Sarah Kanowski' here

Book Growing up in Adelaide in the 1950 s

Download or read book Growing up in Adelaide in the 1950 s written by Susan Blackburn and published by The GHR Press. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Growing up in the fifties was a time of isolation and innocence. We didn’t know what was going on in the rest of the world. We could only compare ourselves with those around us.’ So writes Max Lees in his reminiscence, ‘Freedom’, one of the 13 contributions to this delightful evocation of childhood edited by Susan Blackburn. An associate professor at Monash University and a specialist in Southeast Asian politics who grew up in suburban Adelaide, Blackburn asked friends and acquaintances to join her in trying to recreate the experience of childhood in that place in that time. Most of the memories in this book are of happy, sunlit childhoods, but there are shadows too. Polio was a constant fear and unwanted children were often neglected in orphanages. On the whole, though, the experiences of the contributors were positive and they look back on the fifties with enjoyment, inviting us into their childhood and teenage worlds.

Book excerpt: It is 1951. Beverley is 21 when she arrives in New Guinea dressed in 'safe' pale blue and pearls, to live with her new husband. Over the next months she encounters spiders as big as dinner plates, a family of snakes in the ceiling and a native woman with a baby on one breast and a piglet on the other. But none of this compares to her life after she is spied by the arrogant and strikingly handsome Pole, Stan Rybarz, and their bizarre courting ritual begins. What follows is an astounding story of adventure, passion and risk taking, as Stan wins Beverley and tackles the jungles of New Guinea to construct roads and precarious bridges. It tells of a complex and courageous man, and of a rich and beautiful country struggling to come to terms with approaching independence.

Book The Climb Up and Away

Download or read book The Climb Up and Away written by Tom Lewin and published by Grosvenor House Publishing. This book was released on 2021-08-26 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: So, you think when you go before the judge you're going to get a fair and unbiased hearing? No, no, no, you silly billy! Unless you're pristinely clean and even then you have been weighed and measured before you even get in the dock. From the senior police officer who puts the word in to the prosecution, who then puts the word into the ear of the judge. He will even know what you've had for breakfast. In my latest court case at Coventry Magistrates Court, I was charged with refusing to name the driver of a vehicle that I had sold, even though I had informed the police. The prosecution caught the eye of the judge and held it... Your honour, this is a difficult case... and there are more serious charges... The judge nodded imperceptibly... I was found guilty after 5 minutes. No witnesses. No press. You can guess what my chances are for an appeal. What serious charges? I've heard nothing... In September an ex-tenant broke into my house with eight mates in balaclavas and robbed me. In April a plumber broke into one of my properties; stole a boiler and a waste trap. He admitted it on WhatsApp! In both cases the police have done nothing. No evidence you see... The police pick on easy targets to get their results. If it's too difficult they turn away...

Download or read book Mailman of the Birdsville Track written by Kristin Weidenbach and published by Hachette Australia. This book was released on 2014-12-23 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The truly classic Australian story of Tom Kruse - legendary mailman of the Birdsville Track. For the people who lived in the desert between Marree and Birdsville, contact with the outside world was hard and sporadic - but one man was their lifeline: Tom Kruse. For more than twenty years he was the connection with the outside world for the families, station workers and others who lived along the Birdsville Track. Tom delivered everything from the mail and newspapers to fuel and food - whole communities waited in anticipation for him to drop off their supplies. But it was a hard life, from regularly making running repairs to his truck to unloading and reloading tons of stores so that he could ferry his cargo across flooded creeks. Come sandhills, hell or high water, Tom Kruse kept faith with the locals up and down the Track. Tom was a real Australian hero - and no matter what happened, the mail always got through. 'Told with honesty and vigour' - Sydney Morning Herald 'A tribute to a man who earned the love of a whole generation of Australians and shows us that the pioneer characteristics of guts and good-natured stoicism are still beautiful' - The Age 'Full of characters' - Daily Telegraph
