Book excerpt: H. Lynn Beck had no clue what to do after finishing his master’s degree in Vermont, so he applied to join the Peace Corps. Eventually, he was invited to work in Brazil, and he agreed to work in education in the state of Mato Grosso. He began counting down the days to the start of training. While his Portuguese consisted of ninety-five percent Spanish and five percent Portuguese, he managed to communicate. Working in the geographic center of South America, he felt as if he’d been dumped into a pressure cooker as it was so hot and humid. After thirty days in Cuiabá, he took a new position in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte. Even though it meant moving five hours away with more than a half-million people, it also gave him the chance to stay. Working at the state agricultural extension office, not much was expected of him, but he had an excuse to stay in Brazil for at least another two years, allowing him to learn the language and culture. Join the author as he travels rural roads, meets large rats and tarantulas, and makes friends while immersing himself in a rich culture.

She has been teaching elementary school students in Hawaii for over twenty-six years. Before coming to America, she taught Portuguese and English in So Paulo, Brazil, for four years. Her hobbies include reading romantic novels, watching musicals and classical movies, and travelling. She visited several places: New York City, where she lived for two years; Washington, DC; Philadelphia; Boston; Chicago; Seattle; Portland, where she lived for four years; Niagara Falls; London; Paris; Vancouver; and Ottawa. Her favorite hobby is painting in acrylic on canvas boards. She has painted over fifteen pieces of artwork, which include seascape, landscape, portraits, animals, and still life. Some of her paintings, she created to illustrate this book. She enjoys writing books about her life, which she began in the fall of 2013. On her first book, My Life in Brazil, she tells her story about growing up in Brazil with her sixteen siblings. On her second book, My Life in USA - Part 1, she tells how she came to America on her own and survived countless obstacles as an immigrant who, at first, could barely speak a full sentence in English. She is currently working on her third book, My Life in USA Part 2, on which she tells her story as a divorced mother struggling to survive on her own and how she has come thus far.

Book excerpt: The "native speaker" is often thought of as an ideal language user with "a complete and possibly innate competence in the language" which is perceived as being bounded and fixed to a homogeneous speech community and linked to a nation-state. Despite recent works that challenge its empirical accuracy and theoretical utility, the notion of the "native speaker" is still prevalent today. The Native Speaker Concept shifts the analytical focus from the second language acquisition processes and teaching practices to daily interactions situated in wider sociocultural and political contexts marked by increased global movements of people and multilingual situations. Using an ethnographic approach, the volume critically elucidates the political nature of (not) claiming the "native speaker" status in daily life and the ways the ideology of "native speaker" intersects and articulates, supports, subverts, or complicates various relations of dominance and regimes of standardization. The book offers cases from diverse settings, including classrooms in Japan, a coffee shop in Barcelona, secondary schools in South Africa, a backyard in Rapa Nui (Easter Island), restaurant kitchens, a high school administrator's office, a college classroom in the United States, and the Internet. It also offers a genealogy of the notion of the "native speaker" from the time of the Roman Empire. Employing linguistic, anthropological and educational theories, the volume speaks not only to the analyses of language use and language policy, planning, and teaching, but also to the investigation of wider effects of language ideology on relations of dominance, and institutional and discursive practices.

One day, his father gave him a dog-eared book called Exploration Fawcett. The book told the true story of Lieutenant Colonel Percy Fawcett, a British explorer who in 1925 had gone in search of a lost city in the Amazon and never returned. The riveting story of Fawcett's encounters with deadly animals and hostile tribes, his mission to discover an Atlantean civilization, and the many who lost their own lives when they went in search of him inspired the young Lees to believe that there were still earthly places where one could "fall off the edge." Years later, after becoming a successful neurologist, Lees set off in search of the mysterious figure of Fawcett. What he found exceeded his wildest imaginings. With access to the cache of "Secret Papers," Lees discovered that Fawcett's quest was far stranger than searching for a lost city. There was a "greater mission," one that involved the occult and a belief in a community of evolved beings living in a hidden parallel plane in the Mato Grosso. Lees traveled to Manaus in Fawcett's footsteps.
