Production in any given year, however, may exceed the average, as in 1946, 1948, 1950, 1951, and 1955. Under favorable conditions, it is conceivable that a crop of tons of red cherries might be produced in 1960. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bruising of Red Cherries in Relation to the Method of Harvest Recovery of present method. Many factors affect the recovery or yield of the present method of picking cherries. In general, cherries are lost through two principal sources. Pickers spill cherries onto the ground and also fail to remove all sound fruit from a tree. Data of Table 8 show that more cherries were spilled onto the ground than were left on trees. The average total recovery of cherries was 95 percent a value similar to that obtained by the branch-shaking method. Book The Fruit Situation Vol 87

Download or read book The Fruit Situation Vol 87 written by U. S. Bureau Of Agricultural Economics and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fruit Situation, Vol. 87: June, 1948 Total production of deciduous fruit is expected to be slightly smaller than in 1947. The 1948 peach crop is forecast about.one-sixth smaller than last year and only 2 percent above the 1937-46 average. Prices received by growers for'fliis season should average somewhat higher than those of a year earlier. The total cherry crop, on the other hand, is the third largest of record. Most of the increase is in the sour varieties produced primarily in 5 States adjacent to the Great Lakes. Although the total sweet-cherry crop is estimated about one percent larger than last year, the keeping quality is lower, particularly in California, and fewer cherries may be available for shipment to the fresh market. Growers may receive somewhat higher prices than last year for sweet cherries both for fresh market and for processing, but lower prices seem likely for the much larger crop of sour cherries, most of Which are used for processing. Book The Sakura Obsession

Download or read book The Sakura Obsession written by Naoko Abe and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2019-03-19 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year, the flowering of cherry blossoms marks the beginning of spring. But if it weren’t for the pioneering work of an English eccentric, Collingwood “Cherry” Ingram, Japan’s beloved cherry blossoms could have gone extinct. Ingram first fell in love with the sakura, or cherry tree, when he visited Japan on his honeymoon in 1907 and was so taken with the plant that he brought back hundreds of cuttings with him to England. Years later, upon learning that the Great White Cherry had virtually disappeared from Japan, he buried a living cutting from his own collection in a potato and repatriated it via the Trans-Siberian Express. In the years that followed, Ingram sent more than 100 varieties of cherry tree to new homes around the globe. As much a history of the cherry blossom in Japan as it is the story of one remarkable man, The Sakura Obsession follows the flower from its significance as a symbol of the imperial court, through the dark days of the Second World War, and up to the present-day worldwide fascination with this iconic blossom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades fruit growers have sprayed their trees with toxic chemicals in an attempt to control a range of insect and fungal pests. Yet it is possible to grow apples responsibly, by applying the intuitive knowledge of our great-grandparents with the fruits of modern scientific research and innovation. Since The Apple Grower first appeared in 1998, orchardist Michael Phillips has continued his research with apples, which have been called "organic's final frontier." In this new edition of his widely acclaimed work, Phillips delves even deeper into the mysteries of growing good fruit with minimal inputs. Some of the cuttingedge topics he explores include: The use of kaolin clay as an effective strategy against curculio and borers, as well as its limitations Creating a diverse, healthy orchard ecosystem through understory management of plants, nutrients, and beneficial microorganisms How to make a small apple business viable by focusing on heritage and regional varieties, value-added products, and the "community orchard" model The author's personal voice and clear-eyed advice have already made The Apple Grower a classic among small-scale growers and home orchardists. In fact, anyone serious about succeeding with apples needs to have this updated edition on their bookshelf.
