Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Life of Grover Cleveland The accompanying Life of Grover Cleveland may be considered a supplement to my volume of his "Writings and Speeches," issued in June last. While making the researches necessary for that, I was struck with the paucity and weakness of the literature that had grown up about this virile political figure. Coming to the front as he did without notice, rounding out a political career in an unprecedentedly brief time, no serious and intelligent attempt had ever been made to bring out in anything like connected form the words and a history of the acts that represented what Mr. Cleveland is, and what he means to the American people. Most of the sketches extant were written in 1884 and re-issued in 1888, almost without revision. They are of little value as a record of his career, or an estimate of his character. But no task like this can be executed without incurring agreeable obligations to many persons. The Executors of the estate have generously given me permission to print letters written by Mr. Cleveland, and I have received many suggestions from his sister, Mrs. S. C. Yeomans. I owe especial thanks to Colonel John P. Irish of California; ex-Attorney-General William U. Hensel of Pennsylvania; Colonel Hilary A. Herbert of Washington, D. C.; ex-Secretary George B. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Writings and Speeches of Grover Cleveland With Mr. Cleveland's consent, I have gathered into this volume a representative collection of the speeches, public papers, and letters of a man who has been for many years the most prominent figure in his country. It gives, I think, under a fair classification, his opinion on all the topics upon which he has spoken. I am sure that, by means of it, the reader will be able to form a complete estimate of his character as it is shown in his public utterances. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Grover Cleveland: A Record of Friendship IT has seemed to the writer not only an obligation of friendship but of patriotism to make some record of the personality of Mr. Cleveland as revealed in an intimacy of many years. The large traits of his character, and those important public services which far transcended partisan accomplishment, have made their impress upon the American people and the world. They were eloquently described by high officials and leading men of the two great parties of the nation at the Memorial Meetings of l\iarch 18, 1909, on the sev enty-second anniversary of Mr. Cleve land's birth. Sympathetic speakers and writers have told much, also, of his charac teristics and his daily walk, but the full portrait has not yet been rounded out. I[m1. Download or read book The President Is a Sick Man written by Matthew Algeo and published by Chicago Review Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An extraordinary yet almost unknown chapter in American history is revealed in this extensively researched expose. On July 1, 1893, President Grover Cleveland boarded a friend's yacht and was not heard from for five days. During that time, a team of doctors removed a cancerous tumor from the president's palate along with much of his upper jaw. When an enterprising reporter named E. J. Edwards exposed the secret operation, Cleveland denied it and Edwards was consequently dismissed as a disgrace to journalism. Twenty-four years later, one of the president's doctors finally revealed the incredible truth, but many Americans simply would not believe it. After all, Grover Cleveland's political career was built upon honesty--his most memorable quote was "Tell the truth"--so it was nearly impossible to believe he was involved in such a brazen cover-up. This is the first full account of the disappearance of Grover Cleveland during that summer more than a century ago.
