Topics covered in this volume: impact of minimal nonabelian subgroups on the structure of p-groups, classification of groups all of whose nonnormal subgroups have the same order, degrees of irreducible characters of p-groups associated with finite algebras, groups covered by few proper subgroups, p-groups of element breadth 2 and subgroup breadth 1, exact number of subgroups of given order in a metacyclic p-group, soft subgroups, p-groups with a maximal elementary abelian subgroup of order p2, p-groups generated by certain minimal nonabelian subgroups, p-groups in which certain nonabelian subgroups are 2-generator. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, in some sense, began to be written by the first author in 1983, when optional lectures on Abelian groups were held at the Fac ulty of Mathematics and Computer Science,'Babes-Bolyai' University in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. From 1992,these lectures were extended to a twosemester electivecourse on abelian groups for undergraduate stu dents, followed by a twosemester course on the same topic for graduate students in Algebra. All the other authors attended these two years of lectures and are now Assistants to the Chair of Algebra of this Fac ulty. The first draft of this collection, including only exercises solved by students as home works, the last ten years, had 160pages. We felt that there is a need for a book such as this one, because it would provide a nice bridge between introductory Abelian Group Theory and more advanced research problems. The book InfiniteAbelianGroups, published by LaszloFuchsin two volumes 1970 and 1973 willwithout doubt last as the most important guide for abelian group theorists. Many exercises are selected from this source but there are plenty of other bibliographical items (see the Bibliography) which were used in order to make up this collection. For some of the problems stated, recent developments are also given. Nevertheless, there are plenty of elementary results (the so called 'folklore') in Abelian Group Theory whichdo not appear in any written material. It is also one purpose of this book to complete this gap.

This book was released on 2015-12-14 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the fourth volume of a comprehensive and elementary treatment of finite p-group theory. As in the previous volumes, minimal nonabelian p-groups play an important role. Topics covered in this volume include: subgroup structure of metacyclic p-groups Ishikawa’s theorem on p-groups with two sizes of conjugate classes p-central p-groups theorem of Kegel on nilpotence of H p-groups partitions of p-groups characterizations of Dedekindian groups norm of p-groups p-groups with 2-uniserial subgroups of small order The book also contains hundreds of original exercises and solutions and a comprehensive list of more than 500 open problems. This work is suitable for researchers and graduate students with a modest background in algebra.

Download or read book Abstract Harmonic Analysis written by Edwin Hewitt and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-12-19 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When we accepted the kind invitation of Prof. Dr. F.K. SCHMIDT to write a monograph on abstract harmonie analysis for the Grundlehren der Mathematischen Wissenschaften series, we intended to write aH that we could find out about the subject in a text of about 600 printed pages. We intended that our book should be accessible to beginners, and we hoped to make it useful to specialists as weH. These aims proved to be mutuaHy inconsistent. Hence the present volume comprises only half of the projected work. It gives all of the structure of topologie al groups needed for harmonie analysis as it is known to us; it treats integration on locaHy compact groups in detail; it contains an introduction to the theory of group representations. In the second volume we will treat harmonie analysis on compact groups and locally compact Abelian groups, in considerable detail. The book is based on courses given by E. HEWlTT at the University of Washington and the University of Uppsala, although naturally the material of these courses has been enormously expanded to meet the needs of a formal monograph. Like the other treatments of harmonie analysis that have appeared since 1940, the book is a lineal descendant of A. WEIL'S fundamental treatise (WEIL r 4J) 1. The debt of all workers in the field to WEIL'S work is weH known and enormous.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second of three volumes devoted to elementary finite p-group theory. Similar to the first volume, hundreds of important results are analyzed and, in many cases, simplified. Important topics presented in this monograph include: (a) classification of p-groups all of whose cyclic subgroups of composite orders are normal, (b) classification of 2-groups with exactly three involutions, (c) two proofs of Ward's theorem on quaternion-free groups, (d) 2-groups with small centralizers of an involution, (e) classification of 2-groups with exactly four cyclic subgroups of order 2n > 2, (f) two new proofs of Blackburn's theorem on minimal nonmetacyclic groups, (g) classification of p-groups all of whose subgroups of index p2 are abelian, (h) classification of 2-groups all of whose minimal nonabelian subgroups have order 8, (i) p-groups with cyclic subgroups of index p2 are classified. This volume contains hundreds of original exercises (with all difficult exercises being solved) and an extended list of about 700 open problems. The book is based on Volume 1, and it is suitable for researchers and graduate students of mathematics with a modest background on algebra.
Download or read book Abelian Groups written by L. Fuchs and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abelian Groups deals with the theory of abelian or commutative groups, with special emphasis on results concerning structure problems. More than 500 exercises of varying degrees of difficulty, with and without hints, are included. Some of the exercises illuminate the theorems cited in the text by providing alternative developments, proofs or counterexamples of generalizations. Comprised of 16 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the basic facts on group theory such as factor group or homomorphism. The discussion then turns to direct sums of cyclic groups, divisible groups, and direct summands and pure subgroups, as well as Kulikov's basic subgroups. Subsequent chapters focus on the structure theory of the three main classes of abelian groups: the primary groups, the torsion-free groups, and the mixed groups. Applications of the theory are also considered, along with other topics such as homomorphism groups and endomorphism rings; the Schreier extension theory with a discussion of the group of extensions and the structure of the tensor product. In addition, the book examines the theory of the additive group of rings and the multiplicative group of fields, along with Baer's theory of the lattice of subgroups. This book is intended for young research workers and students who intend to familiarize themselves with abelian groups.
