Download or read book Transition Metal Carbides and Nitrides written by Louis Toth and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-04-11 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Refractory Materials, Volume 7: Transition Metal Carbides and Nitrides discusses the developments in transition metal carbide and nitride research. This volume is organized into nine chapters that emphasize the mechanical and superconducting properties of these compounds. The introductory chapters deal with the general properties, preparation techniques, characterization, crystal chemistry, phase relationships, and thermodynamics of transition metal carbides and nitrides. The following chapter highlights the mechanical properties of these compounds, such as elastic and plastic deformation, fracture, strengthening mechanisms, and hardness. The discussion then shifts to specific electrical and magnetic properties, including electrical resistivity, Hall coefficient, and magnetic susceptibility. A separate chapter is devoted to carbides and nitrides as superconductors. The concluding chapters explore certain theories that explain the mechanisms of band structure and bonding in carbides and nitrides. This volume is of great value to research workers in metallurgy, ceramics, physics, chemistry, and related fields, as well as to advanced students investigating problems concerning high temperature materials or interstitial compounds.

Book Interstitial Alloys

Download or read book Interstitial Alloys written by H. J. Goldschmidt and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-01-22 with total page 643 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interstitial Alloys covers the significant progress in the development and understanding of the principles and applications of interstitial alloys. Interstitial alloy refers to the existence of a pure metal lattice, which the metal-metal atom bond remains the dominant one, and the non-metal atoms are sufficiently small to be accommodated within the metal lattice without, or with only a limited degree of, distortion from metal-type symmetry. This book contains 10 chapters and begins with a brief introduction to the basic principles of interstitial alloys. The next two chapters describe the physical properties of these alloys, along with their behavior in solid solutions. The remaining chapters deal with a specific interstitial alloy, its structure, physico-chemical properties, preparation, and application. This work specifically considers carbide, nitride, boride, silicide, oxide, hydride, and mixed interstitial alloys. This book will be of value to chemists and physicists.

This book was released on 2024-11-07 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two-dimensional semiconducting materials (2D-SCMs) are the subject of intensive study in the fields of photonics and optoelectronics because of their unusual optical, electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties. The main objective of 2D Semiconducting Materials for Electronic, Photonic, and Optoelectronic Devices is to provide current, state-of-the-art knowledge of two-dimensional semiconducting materials for various applications. Two-dimensional semiconducting materials are the basic building blocks for making photodiodes, light-emitting diodes, light-detecting devices, data storage, telecommunications, and energy-storage devices. When it comes to two-dimensional semiconducting materials, electronic, photonic, and optoelectronic applications, as well as future plans for improving performance, no modern book covers as much ground. The planned book will fill such gaps by offering a comprehensive analysis of two-dimensional semiconducting materials. This book covers a range of advanced 2D materials, their fundamentals, and the chemistry for many emerging applications. All the chapters are covered by experts in these areas around the world, making this a suitable textbook for students and providing new guidelines to researchers and industries. • Covers topics such as fundamentals and advanced knowledge of two-dimensional semiconducting materials • Provides details about the recent methods used for the synthesis, characterization, and applications of two-dimensional semiconducting materials • Covers the state-of-the-art development in two-dimensional semiconducting materials and their emerging applications This book provides directions to students, scientists, and researchers in semiconductors and related disciplines to help them better understand the physics, characteristics, and applications of 2D semiconductors.

Book Some Aspects of the Organometallic Chemistry of the Group VI Transition Metals

Download or read book Some Aspects of the Organometallic Chemistry of the Group VI Transition Metals written by Ezra Eddy Isaacs and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reaction of cycloheptatrienyltricarbonyl molybdenum cation with various main group V donor ligands (L) yielded, in general, mono-substituted complexes, [C[subscript 7]H[subscript 7]Mo(CO)[subscript 2]L][superscript +]. [superscript 31]P nmr studies on some related di-tertiary phosphine complexes provided a convenient and unequivocal determination of the stereochemistry. The reduction of the cationic cycloheptatrienyl complexes with sodium borohydride provided a suitable synthetic route to the group V derivatives of cyclo- heptatrienetricarbonylmolybdenum. The infrared, [superscript l]H and [superscript 13]C nmr, and mass spectral properties of these complexes were studied. Some main group IV ligands bonded to cycloheptatrienyldicarbonylmolybdenum were also prepared and studied by spectral means. A number of main group IV - group VI metal penta- carbonyl anionic derivatives have been prepared by the reaction of the chloropentacarbonyl anions with the organolithium compounds of the group IV elements. These compounds have the general formula, [R[subscript 3]M' -M(CO)[subscript 5]][superscript -] (where R = Me, Ph or halogen; M' = Si, Ge, Sn or Pb; M = Cr, Mo or W). Approximate carbonyl force constants were calculated from the infrared carbonyl stretching vibrations and these provided some insight into the nature of the metal-metal bonds. Transition metal nitrosyl derivatives have also been prepared by the reaction of some anionic complexes with nitrosonium hexafluorophosphate. These compounds have the general formula LM(CO)[subscript 4]NO (where L is a main group IV ligand or a halogen group and M is Mo or W). The carbonyl and nitrosyl force constants were calculated and are discussed in terms of the relative bonding properties of CO and NO ligands. Finally, the oxidation reaction of some dinuclear metal carbonyls with AgNO[subscript 2] led to the formation of metal carbonyls containing nitro ligands. Linkage isomerism involving nitro and nitrito species was encountered in solution. The [(CH[subscript 3]CN)[subscript 3]Re(CO)[subscript 3]] + cation was formed 2 - from the oxidation reaction of [Re[subscript 4](CO)[subscript 16]][superscript 2-] in acetonitrile.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: V. I. MATKOVICH During the meeting of the International Symposium on Boron held in October, 1972 in Tbilisi, U.S.S.R., the idea was proposed to assemble a review of boron and refractory borides by the specialists present. The advantages of such a work were immediately apparent. Such diverse applications of borides as in protective armor, nuclear reactors, coat ings, reinforcement, etc. can hardly all be presented in sufficient detail by a single author. On the other hand it was also recognized that with so much specialization, some areas of interest may not be covered. Within the last decade or two a number of areas have been developed in which the use of refractory borides is growing and improvements are being actively explored. Thus, a number of borides have considerable potential as reinforcing material for plastics or light metals, though only boron fibers have been firmly established up to the present. Ap plication of flakes and films for two-dimensional reinforcement appears attractive, although the high cost of materials and development repre sents a considerable barrier. A number of borides have been used to manufacture lightweight protec tive armor. In this area relatively fast changes seem to be taking place as improvements in performance and weight are made. Boron carbide has found considerable use in this application and new developments exploit the light weight of beryllium borides.
