This will help to address in a new way one of the most debated questions of modern astrophysics: which processes influence the evolution of galaxies in groups. The thesis project aims to study the history of recent star formation and galaxies as a function of the mass of the structure and characteristics of intergalactic gas. The scientific question we aim to answer is to what extent the group environment influence the evolution of galaxies. The first task of my work consists in the creation of a homogeneous spectrophotometric sample of galaxies (Guglielmo et al. 2017) at 0.1≤z≤0.6, suitable for scientific purposes. The catalogue is fundamental for all XXL studies that aims at relating optical properties derived from galaxies with X-ray information and is widely used in the whole XXL collaboration. The first scientific realization of this thesis looks at the distribution of the mass included in the stars of galaxies. After evaluating the stability of the distributionscompared to the environment, I examined how the environment affects star formation and the observed properties of galaxies. I started this analysis from the richest supercluster identified in XXL-N, XLSSsC N01, located at redshift z∼0.3, and composed of 14 groups and clusters. Finally, I extend the analysis of this peculiar supercluster to the whole XXL-N field, by taking advantage of both the global and local environment parametrisations.

In October 2003, over 170 astronomers from 15 countries met for a 4-day workshop to extensively illustrate and discuss all major observational projects and ongoing theoretical efforts to model galaxy formation and evolution. This volume contains the complete proceedings of this meeting and is therefore a unique and timely overview of the current state of research in this rapidly evolving field.

In addition, DEEP2 is presented in comparison to past and present surveys of the local and distant galaxy populations, with an eye towards future studies at z ≳ 1. Finally, I detail the final DEEP2 redshift catalog and its public release.

Book excerpt: Galaxy clusters are rare objects in the universe, but on-going wide field optical surveys are identifying many thousands of them to redshift 1.0 and beyond. Using early data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) and publicly released data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), this dissertation explores the evolution of cluster galaxies in the redshift range from 0 to 1.0. As it is common for deep wide field sky surveys like DES to struggle with galaxy detection efficiency at cluster core, the first component of this dissertation describes an efficient package that helps resolving the issue. The second part focuses on the formation of cluster galaxies. The study quantifies the growth of cluster bright central galaxies (BCGs), and argues for the importance of merging and intra-cluster light production during BCG evolution. An analysis of cluster red sequence galaxy luminosity function is also performed, demonstrating that the abundance of these galaxies is mildly dependent on cluster mass and redshift. The last component of the dissertation characterizes the properties of galaxy filaments to help understanding cluster environments.
