Book Introduction to Affine Group Schemes

Download or read book Introduction to Affine Group Schemes written by W.C. Waterhouse and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ah Love! Could you and I with Him consl?ire To grasp this sorry Scheme of things entIre' KHAYYAM People investigating algebraic groups have studied the same objects in many different guises. My first goal thus has been to take three different viewpoints and demonstrate how they offer complementary intuitive insight into the subject. In Part I we begin with a functorial idea, discussing some familiar processes for constructing groups. These turn out to be equivalent to the ring-theoretic objects called Hopf algebras, with which we can then con struct new examples. Study of their representations shows that they are closely related to groups of matrices, and closed sets in matrix space give us a geometric picture of some of the objects involved. This interplay of methods continues as we turn to specific results. In Part II, a geometric idea (connectedness) and one from classical matrix theory (Jordan decomposition) blend with the study of separable algebras. In Part III, a notion of differential prompted by the theory of Lie groups is used to prove the absence of nilpotents in certain Hopf algebras. The ring-theoretic work on faithful flatness in Part IV turns out to give the true explanation for the behavior of quotient group functors. Finally, the material is connected with other parts of algebra in Part V, which shows how twisted forms of any algebraic structure are governed by its automorphism group scheme.

Book Commutative Group Schemes

Download or read book Commutative Group Schemes written by F. Oort and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-11-14 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We restrict ourselves to two aspects of the field of group schemes, in which the results are fairly complete: commutative algebraic group schemes over an algebraically closed field (of characteristic different from zero), and a duality theory concern ing abelian schemes over a locally noetherian prescheme. The prelim inaries for these considerations are brought together in chapter I. SERRE described properties of the category of commutative quasi-algebraic groups by introducing pro-algebraic groups. In char8teristic zero the situation is clear. In characteristic different from zero information on finite group schemee is needed in order to handle group schemes; this information can be found in work of GABRIEL. In the second chapter these ideas of SERRE and GABRIEL are put together. Also extension groups of elementary group schemes are determined. A suggestion in a paper by MANIN gave crystallization to a fee11ng of symmetry concerning subgroups of abelian varieties. In the third chapter we prove that the dual of an abelian scheme and the linear dual of a finite subgroup scheme are related in a very natural way. Afterwards we became aware that a special case of this theorem was already known by CARTIER and BARSOTTI. Applications of this duality theorem are: the classical duality theorem ("duality hy pothesis", proved by CARTIER and by NISHI); calculation of Ext(~a,A), where A is an abelian variety (result conjectured by SERRE); a proof of the symmetry condition (due to MANIN) concerning the isogeny type of a formal group attached to an abelian variety.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grothendieck’s beautiful theory of schemes permeates modern algebraic geometry and underlies its applications to number theory, physics, and applied mathematics. This simple account of that theory emphasizes and explains the universal geometric concepts behind the definitions. In the book, concepts are illustrated with fundamental examples, and explicit calculations show how the constructions of scheme theory are carried out in practice.

Book Torsors Reductive Group Schemes and Extended Affine Lie Algebras

Download or read book Torsors Reductive Group Schemes and Extended Affine Lie Algebras written by Philippe Gille and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2013-10-23 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors give a detailed description of the torsors that correspond to multiloop algebras. These algebras are twisted forms of simple Lie algebras extended over Laurent polynomial rings. They play a crucial role in the construction of Extended Affine Lie Algebras (which are higher nullity analogues of the affine Kac-Moody Lie algebras). The torsor approach that the authors take draws heavily from the theory of reductive group schemes developed by M. Demazure and A. Grothendieck. It also allows the authors to find a bridge between multiloop algebras and the work of F. Bruhat and J. Tits on reductive groups over complete local fields.

Book Modular Forms and Fermat s Last Theorem

Download or read book Modular Forms and Fermat s Last Theorem written by Gary Cornell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1997 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of expanded versions of lectures given at an instructional conference on number theory and arithmetic geometry held at Boston University. The purpose of the conference, and indeed this book, is to introduce and explain the many ideas and techniques used by Wiles in his proof, and to explain how his result can be combined with Ribet's theorem and ideas of Frey and Serre to show, at long last, that Fermat's Last Theorem is true. The book begins with an overview of the complete proof, theory of elliptic curves, modular functions, modular curves, Galois cohomology, and finite group schemes. In recognition of the historical significance of Fermat's Last Theorem, the volume concludes by reflecting on the history of the problem, while placing Wiles' theorem into a more general Diophantine context suggesting future applications.

Download or read book The Book of Involutions written by Max-Albert Knus and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1998-06-30 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is an exposition of the theory of central simple algebras with involution, in relation to linear algebraic groups. It provides the algebra-theoretic foundations for much of the recent work on linear algebraic groups over arbitrary fields. Involutions are viewed as twisted forms of (hermitian) quadrics, leading to new developments on the model of the algebraic theory of quadratic forms. In addition to classical groups, phenomena related to triality are also discussed, as well as groups of type $F_4$ or $G_2$ arising from exceptional Jordan or composition algebras. Several results and notions appear here for the first time, notably the discriminant algebra of an algebra with unitary involution and the algebra-theoretic counterpart to linear groups of type $D_4$. This volume also contains a Bibliography and Index. Features: original material not in print elsewhere a comprehensive discussion of algebra-theoretic and group-theoretic aspects extensive notes that give historical perspective and a survey on the literature rational methods that allow possible generalization to more general base rings

Book Modular Forms and Fermat s Last Theorem

Download or read book Modular Forms and Fermat s Last Theorem written by Gary Cornell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the expanded lectures given at a conference on number theory and arithmetic geometry held at Boston University. It introduces and explains the many ideas and techniques used by Wiles, and to explain how his result can be combined with Ribets theorem and ideas of Frey and Serre to prove Fermats Last Theorem. The book begins with an overview of the complete proof, followed by several introductory chapters surveying the basic theory of elliptic curves, modular functions and curves, Galois cohomology, and finite group schemes. Representation theory, which lies at the core of the proof, is dealt with in a chapter on automorphic representations and the Langlands-Tunnell theorem, and this is followed by in-depth discussions of Serres conjectures, Galois deformations, universal deformation rings, Hecke algebras, and complete intersections. The book concludes by looking both forward and backward, reflecting on the history of the problem, while placing Wiles'theorem into a more general Diophantine context suggesting future applications. Students and professional mathematicians alike will find this an indispensable resource.

Book Algebraic Groups and Their Birational Invariants

Download or read book Algebraic Groups and Their Birational Invariants written by V. E. Voskresenskii and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2011-10-06 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the late 1960s, methods of birational geometry have been used successfully in the theory of linear algebraic groups, especially in arithmetic problems. This book--which can be viewed as a significant revision of the author's book, Algebraic Tori (Nauka, Moscow, 1977)--studies birational properties of linear algebraic groups focusing on arithmetic applications. The main topics are forms and Galois cohomology, the Picard group and the Brauer group, birational geometry of algebraic tori, arithmetic of algebraic groups, Tamagawa numbers, $R$-equivalence, projective toric varieties, invariants of finite transformation groups, and index-formulas. Results and applications are recent. There is an extensive bibliography with additional comments that can serve as a guide for further reading.

Book Theory of Association Schemes

Download or read book Theory of Association Schemes written by Paul-Hermann Zieschang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-10-20 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a concept-oriented treatment of the structure theory of association schemes. The generalization of Sylow’s group theoretic theorems to scheme theory arises as a consequence of arithmetical considerations about quotient schemes. The theory of Coxeter schemes (equivalent to the theory of buildings) emerges naturally and yields a purely algebraic proof of Tits’ main theorem on buildings of spherical type.

Book Algebraic Geometry II Cohomology of Schemes

Download or read book Algebraic Geometry II Cohomology of Schemes written by Ulrich Görtz and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-11-22 with total page 877 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book completes the comprehensive introduction to modern algebraic geometry which was started with the introductory volume Algebraic Geometry I: Schemes. It begins by discussing in detail the notions of smooth, unramified and étale morphisms including the étale fundamental group. The main part is dedicated to the cohomology of quasi-coherent sheaves. The treatment is based on the formalism of derived categories which allows an efficient and conceptual treatment of the theory, which is of crucial importance in all areas of algebraic geometry. After the foundations are set up, several more advanced topics are studied, such as numerical intersection theory, an abstract version of the Theorem of Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch, the Theorem on Formal Functions, Grothendieck's algebraization results and a very general version of Grothendieck duality. The book concludes with chapters on curves and on abelian schemes, which serve to develop the basics of the theory of these two important classes of schemes on an advanced level, and at the same time to illustrate the power of the techniques introduced previously. The text contains many exercises that allow the reader to check their comprehension of the text, present further examples or give an outlook on further results.
