Download or read book Groundwaters of New Zealand written by Michael R. Rosen and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Groundwaters of New Zealand is the definitive new source for information on the groundwater resources of New Zealand. Written by many of New Zealand's leading experts, the book covers varied aspects of groundwater research, assessment, use, and management in New Zealand. This book is divided into two parts. The first part documents the history of groundwater development in New Zealand, and current research on interactions between groundwater systems and other components of the hydrological cycle such as health, processes (recharge and groundwater-surface water interaction) and techniques (isotopic methods). The second part of the book provides up-to-date regional summaries of groundwater resources and quality in every region of the country. Groundwater quality is explored in chapters on groundwater chemistry and microbiology, and the health aspects of groundwater. The book also contains detailed regional summaries, covering the location, use, quality, and management of groundwater resources, for the entire country. This book will be the essential reference text for all environmental, engineering, and resource management professionals working with groundwater, and students of the many scientific and engineering disciplines that contribute to groundwater investigations. Many groundwater users, both practicing and in school will find this book a valuable reference that adds significantly to their understanding of groundwater resources.-back cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water is vital to life, maintenance of ecological balance, economic development, and sustenance of civilization. Planning and management of water resources and its optimal use are a matter of urgency for most countries of the world, and even more so for India with a huge population. Growing population and expanding economic activities exert increasing demands on water for varied needs--domestic, industrial, agricultural, power generation, navigation, recreation, etc. In India, agriculture is the highest user of water. The past three decades have witnessed numerous advances as well as have presented intriguing challenges and exciting opportunities in hydrology and water resources. Compounding them has been the growing environmental consciousness. Nowhere are these challenges more apparent than in India. As we approach the twenty first century, it is entirely fitting to take stock of what has been accomplished and what remains to be accomplished, and what accomplishments are relevant, with particular reference to Indian conditions.

Book Groundwater Quality State and Trends in T maki Makaurau

Download or read book Groundwater Quality State and Trends in T maki Makaurau written by Courtney Foster (Environmental specialist) and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Auckland Council regularly monitors groundwater quality (physical, chemical and microbiological parameters) within some of the region's aquifers as part of its State of the Environment programme. The primary purpose of the groundwater quality monitoring programme is to regularly assess and report the current state and long-term trends for groundwater quality in aquifers across the region. This reporting is driven by requirements under the Resource Management Act 1991 and the National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management 2020 (NPS-FM, 2020). Water quality is reported against all relevant New Zealand standards. Results relating to the Drinking Water Standards New Zealand do not comprise a compliance-level assessment but are provided for a comprehensive assessment of the current state of groundwater resources. The results from State of the Environment monitoring are used to inform management of potable drinking water supplies and rural productive land use activities, for evidencing the efficacy of urban stormwater and wastewater management, and to inform the management of the flow-on effects on ecosystem health of streams with high groundwater baseflow."--Executive summary.

Book Groundwater Monitoring

Download or read book Groundwater Monitoring written by Anne Marie Fouillac and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-08-25 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Groundwater is sometimes called “the hidden asset” – awareness of its existence and its importance is not well known and as a consequence the measures which are required to protect and manage it in an environmental sustainable way are either not taken or are taken too late. Where pollution has occurred and measures are taken too late it may take decades, or longer, until the necessary restoration of quality is achieved. This comprehensive text presents in the following sections: Groundwater monitoring in the regulatory and international context Conceptual modelling and network design Groundwater pollutants and other pressures Groundwater quality standards and trend assessment Case studies for groundwater assessment and monitoring in the light of EU legislation Groundwater measurements Associating external stakeholders The editors have collected state-of-the-art information on groundwater quality assessment monitoring from the international community, providing further stimulation to the work of all parties involved in the challenges this area creates to ensure sound quality assessment of groundwater.

Book Integrated Groundwater Management

Download or read book Integrated Groundwater Management written by Anthony J Jakeman and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-05 with total page 756 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to document for the first time the dimensions and requirements of effective integrated groundwater management (IGM). Groundwater management is a formidable challenge, one that remains one of humanity’s foremost priorities. It has become a largely non-renewable resource that is overexploited in many parts of the world. In the 21st century, the issue moves from how to simply obtain the water we need to how we manage it sustainably for future generations, future economies, and future ecosystems. The focus then becomes one of understanding the drivers and current state of the groundwater resource, and restoring equilibrium to at-risk aquifers. Many interrelated dimensions, however, come to bear when trying to manage groundwater effectively. An integrated approach to groundwater necessarily involves many factors beyond the aquifer itself, such as surface water, water use, water quality, and ecohydrology. Moreover, the science by itself can only define the fundamental bounds of what is possible; effective IGM must also engage the wider community of stakeholders to develop and support policy and other socioeconomic tools needed to realize effective IGM. In order to demonstrate IGM, this book covers theory and principles, embracing: 1) an overview of the dimensions and requirements of groundwater management from an international perspective; 2) the scale of groundwater issues internationally and its links with other sectors, principally energy and climate change; 3) groundwater governance with regard to principles, instruments and institutions available for IGM; 4) biophysical constraints and the capacity and role of hydroecological and hydrogeological science including water quality concerns; and 5) necessary tools including models, data infrastructures, decision support systems and the management of uncertainty. Examples of effective, and failed, IGM are given. Throughout, the importance of the socioeconomic context that connects all effective IGM is emphasized. Taken as a whole, this work relates the many facets of effective IGM, from the catchment to global perspective.
