Book A Global Mapping System for Bambara Groundnut Production

Download or read book A Global Mapping System for Bambara Groundnut Production written by Sayed N. Azam-Ali and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2001 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes an approach to assess locations and areal expenses that have potential for the production of bambara groundnut (Vigna subterranea L. Verdc) across the world. The methodology was applied both to regions such as Africa, where the crop is widely cultivated but where experimental evidence is limited, and to new regions that have not previously been associated with bambara groundnut but where environmental factors are conductive for productive growth. A weather generator and a crop simulation model of bambara groundnut (BAMnut) were incorporated into a Geographical Information System (GIS) to predict, for the first time, bambara groundnut production for the world. BAMnut is a process-based model that uses physiological principles to describe the capture and use of environmental resources principally solar radiation and soil moisture. This mechanistic approach allows crop growth and yield to be predicted for regions beyond those used in the development of the model or regions where bambara groundnut is currently cultivated. The preliminary identification of potentially suitable areas for production, based on the agro-ecological requirements of the crop, serve as a useful prelude to detailed field investigations on bambara groundnut to identify appropriate management practices and may provide a basis for a similar assessment on many other underutilized crops.--Publisher's description.

Book Are the drivers of production and sales of maize groundnut and soyabean by farming households in Malawi changing Analysis of recent household surveys

Download or read book Are the drivers of production and sales of maize groundnut and soyabean by farming households in Malawi changing Analysis of recent household surveys written by Jolex, Aubrey and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2021-11-03 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By directing increasing shares of their farm production to the market and, thereby, realizing greater incomes, farming households can accelerate local rural economic development. In this study, we examine household and spatial factors that may drive smallholder farming households in Malawi to produce and sell maize, groundnut, and soyabean. Two cross-sectional analyses are done using household level data from rounds of the Malawi Integrated Household Survey (IHS). First, using data for farming households from the fifth IHS (2019/20) in a series of weighted logistical models, we examine which of a set of household and spatial level factors are associated with a household producing each of the three crops. For maize and groundnut, we extend the analysis by similarly identifying the factors associated with whether a producing household sells any of their maize or groundnut, and if, they do, whether they sell more than half of their harvest. The second analysis consists of replicating the logistical models for production and sales using household data from the fourth IHS (2016/17) and comparing those results to the results obtained from the fifth IHS. This is done to identify whether any drivers of the production and sale of the three crops are changing over time. Overall, only a few factors are consistently associated with a farming household choosing to produce a particular crop or to sell part of their production of the crop. We also see limited changes between 2016/17 and 2019/20 in the drivers of the production and sale of these crops. However, the strength of the positive associations between landholding size and the commercial production of the three crops intensified between the two surveys. This suggests that as landholdings become smaller with continuing population growth, commercial production will increasingly be limited to those households with the largest landholdings. Government and other stakeholders in rural economic development can consider the evidence from these analyses in developing strategies to foster greater diversity in employment in rural economies across Malawi away from agriculture, while nonetheless promoting increased production by those smallholders in a position to participate profitably in the value chains for these crops.

Book Sowing Legume Seeds Reaping Cash

Download or read book Sowing Legume Seeds Reaping Cash written by Essegbemon Akpo and published by . This book was released on 2020-10-09 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book shares impact stories - testimonies from various value chain actors who have been part of the Tropical Legumes (TL) projects, over the past twelve years. The Tropical Legumes projects led by ICRISAT in three parts (TLI, TLII and TLIII), constitute a major international initiative supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) and jointly implemented by the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and National Agricultural Research Systems (NARS) partners from Sub-Saharan Africa and India. The project developed improved cultivars of common bean, cowpea, chickpea and groundnut (but also soya bean and pigeon pea cultivars in its initial phases) and delivers their seed to smallholders in BMGF-focus areas. It also strengthens the NARS and CGIAR's breeding programs and seed platforms to enhance their ability to deliver high and sustained outputs to smallholder farmers. The book compiles the experiences of a diversity of actors within the grain legume value chains, with a focus on groundnut and common beans in Tanzania and Uganda, groundnut and cowpea in Nigeria, and groundnut in Ghana. All stakeholders involved share their thoughts on being part of a decade-long development project family. National agricultural research institutes, knowledge brokering organizations, NGOs, public and private seed companies, agro-dealers, individual seed entrepreneurs, farm-implement makers, farmer cooperatives, farmer groups, individual men and women farmers, middlemen, processors, traders and consumers were all involved in this project, and as such this book provides valuable insights for development workers, technical staff, and project managers. Book Undeserved Death A Study on Suicide of Farmers in Andhra Pradesh 2000 2005

Download or read book Undeserved Death A Study on Suicide of Farmers in Andhra Pradesh 2000 2005 written by K.S. Bhat and published by Allied Publishers. This book was released on 2006-07-12 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The multi-dimensional nature of farmers' distress in several states of India is pushing farmers to commit suicides. The deficiencies in institutional factors — those related to credit, insurance, supply of inputs such as seeds, fertilizers, pesticides and marketing —are becoming serious. Social factors such as the non-empowerment of elected local bodies, the exploitative attitude of moneylenders and merchants, and gender discrimination are aggravating the deprivation of small and marginal farmers and landless agricultural labourers. Compounding the crumbling institutional and social support systems are the other factors such as disconnection between research, education and extension organizations and rural realities, land degradation, unsustainable exploitation of groundwater and consecutive droughts. All these resulted in the agrarian crisis, more particularly in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamilnadu, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Gujarat and Punjab. Analyzing some of these factors pertaining to agrarian crisis and farmer's suicides, a pilot study and other articles in this book analytically bring out the prevailing situation in Andhra Pradesh. A few articles in the book also highlight the situation in Karnataka, Maharashtra and Punjab. Some of the implications discussed by the academicians, activists, researchers and others will definitely help the policy makers in their future programme to safeguard and strengthen the livelihood security of the families of resource-poor small and marginal farmers. The book will be of immense use both for the scholars and the government authorities.

Book Land Labour and Entrustment

Download or read book Land Labour and Entrustment written by Pamela Kea and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010-05-01 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diverse contractual arrangements and forms of exchange established between smallholder farmers, their households and community work groups, are important to our understanding of processes of agrarian transformation in Sub-Saharan Africa. However, little has been written in this area. Challenging portrayals of West African female farmers as a homogenous group, the present study provides an ethnographic account of the contractual relations established between female hosts and migrants, in the exchange of land and labour for agrarian production in a Gambian community. Further, it demonstrates the way in which, despite the liberalization of the economy, local cultural practices, such as that of entrustment, continue to be of significance in affecting the nature and particular character of agrarian transformation and postcolonial capitalist development.

Book Advances in Food and Non Food Biomass Production Processing and Use in Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Advances in Food and Non Food Biomass Production Processing and Use in Sub Saharan Africa written by Daniel Callo-Concha and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-05-20 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bioeconomy concept aims to add sustainability to the production, transformation, and trade of biological goods. Though implemented around the world, the development of national bioeconomies is uneven, especially in the global South, where major challenges exist in Sub-Saharan Africa. In this context, the international BiomassWeb project aimed to underpin the bioeconomy concept by applying the value web approach, which seeks to uncover complex interlinked value webs instead of linear value chains. The project also aimed to develop intervention options to strengthen and optimize the synergies and trade-offs among different value chains. The Special Issue “Advances in Food and Non-Food Biomass Production, Processing and Use in Sub-Saharan Africa: Toward a Basis for a Regional Bioeconomy" compiles 23 articles produced in this framework. The articles are grouped in four sections: the value web approach; the production side; processing, transformation and trade; and global views.
