This book was released on 2021-04-05 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can groundhogs tell the weather? Can woodchucks chuck wood? These wild animals are some of the cutest and seemingly laziest of mammals. They do, however, contribute a great deal to a healthy and vibrant ecosystem. They are shy and alert creatures and seldom seen, spending 80% of their time underground. Though they are not best friends with some farmers or ranchers, they help more than 100 other animals survive. This book attempts to peek into the lives of the largest ground squirrels globally and help the reader grow and appreciate their contribution. Read this book to learn what "chucking wood" actually meant.

Through engaging anecdotes and inspired advice, profiles of home gardeners throughout the country, and interviews with scientists and horticulturalists, Lawson applies the broader lessons of ecology to our own outdoor spaces. Detailed chapters address planting for wildlife by choosing native species; providing habitats that shelter baby animals, as well as birds, bees, and butterflies; creating safe zones in the garden; cohabiting with creatures often regarded as pests; letting nature be your garden designer; and encouraging natural processes and evolution in the garden. The Humane Gardener fills a unique niche in describing simple principles for both attracting wildlife and peacefully resolving conflicts with all the creatures that share our world.

Book Marmots

    Book Details:
  • Author : David P. Barash
  • Publisher : Stanford University Press
  • Release : 1989
  • ISBN : 9780804715348
  • Pages : 396 pages

Download or read book Marmots written by David P. Barash and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, based on over twenty years of study around the world, the author summarizes and synthesizes virtually everything that is known of the social behaviour and ecology of marmots. The organizing principle of the author's approach is evolution by natural selection - and thus, the degree to which the social behaviour of free-living animals can be interpreted as representing adaptations to particular environmental conditions. This book is essentially a single, widespread genus (genus Marmota comprising fourteen species found in North America and Eurasia. As such, it represents a productive union of theoretical insights from Darwinism and modern sociobiology, accompanied by a wealth of empirical data. Marmots are notable in that they constitute a relatively homogeneous group, made up of numerous species which greatly resemble each other. However, they occupy widely varying habitats - from temperate, lowland elevations to (more often) alpine meadows - and theory would predict behavioural adaptations to match their habitats.

His message: to know these animals is to save them. Sartore intends to photograph every animal in captivity in the world. He is circling the globe, visiting zoos and wildlife rescue centers to create studio portraits of 12,000 species, with an emphasis on those facing extinction. He has photographed more than 6,000 already and now, thanks to a multi-year partnership with National Geographic, he may reach his goal. This book showcases his animal portraits: from tiny to mammoth, from the Florida grasshopper sparrow to the greater one-horned rhinoceros. Book Ecotourism s Promise and Peril

Download or read book Ecotourism s Promise and Peril written by Daniel T. Blumstein and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-05-17 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intended as a guide for wildlife managers and ecotourism operators, as well as interested ecotourists, this book addresses the biological principles governing how ecotourism affects wildlife. The introductory chapters focus on four key responses to human visitation—behavioral, physiological, ecological, and evolutionary. Readers will discover ecotourism’s effects on biodiversity in connection with various industries that are habitat or taxonomically specific: fish tourism (including both freshwater and marine), marine mammal tourism, the huge industry centered on terrestrial animals, and the well-studied industry of penguin tourism. Given that the costs and benefits of ecotourism cannot be meaningfully assessed without understanding the human context, particular attention is given to how ecotourism has been used as part of community development. In closing, the book synthesizes the current state of knowledge regarding best practices for reducing human impacts on wildlife. The final chapter highlights key research questions that must be addressed to provide more evidence-based guidelines and policy.
