Book excerpt: "As directed by the Fishery Conservation and Management Act of 1976 (P.L. 95-265) the North Pacific Fishery Management Council is preparing fishery management plans for those fisheries within its area of jurisdiction. This document was the first of the plans to be completed by the Council since its formation in October, 1976. The Fishery Management Plan for the Gulf of Alaska Groundfish Fishery was developed by a multi-agency team composed of members from the National Marine Fisheries Service, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, the International Pacific Halibut Commission and the University of Washington. It was approved by the North Pacific Fishery Management Council on September 24, 1977, for submission to the Secretary of Commerce. Regulations to implement this plan were published on the same date. It was approved by the Secretary of Commerce and published in the Federal Register on April 21, 1978. The Plan has been amended seven times, beginning December 1, 1978 (Amendment 1 implemented) and most recently, November 1, 1979 (Amendment 7 implemented). Book Alaska Codfish Chronicle

Download or read book Alaska Codfish Chronicle written by James Mackovjak and published by University of Alaska Press. This book was released on 2019-08-15 with total page 575 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cod is one of the most widely consumed fish in the world. For many years, the Atlantic cod industry took center stage, but partly thanks to climate change and overfishing, it is more and more likely that the cod on your kitchen table or in your fast food fish fillets came from Alaska’s Pacific Cod Fishery. Alaska Codfish Chronicle is the first comprehensive history of this fishery. It looks at the early decades of the fishery’s history, a period marked by hardship and danger, as well as the dominance of foreign fishermen. And the modern era, beginning in 1976 when the United States claimed an exclusive economic zone around the Alaska coasts, “Americanizing” the fishery and replacing the foreign fleets that had been ravaging the resources in the Gulf of Alaska and the Bering Sea. Today, the Pacific cod fishery is, in terms of poundage, the second largest fishery in Alaska, and considered among the best-managed fisheries in the world. This history is extremely well documented, does not spare details, and is accessible to general readers. It incorporates nearly a hundred photographs and illustrations and is sprinkled with numerous observations from fishing industry journals and reports, even incorporating poems and recipes, making this an especially thorough and unique account of one of Alaska’s most iconic and important industries.

Book Review of Northeast Fishery Stock Assessments

Download or read book Review of Northeast Fishery Stock Assessments written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1998-04-17 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collapse of cod, flounder, and haddock fish stocks in the Northeast United States has caused widespread concern among managers and fishers in the United States and Canada. The diminishing stocks have forced managers to take strict regulatory measures. Numerous questions have been raised about the adequacy of stock assessment science used to evaluate the status of these stocks and the appropriateness of the management measures taken. Based on these concerns, Congress mandated that a scientific review of the methodology and data used to evaluate these stocks be conducted. In this volume, the committee concludes that although there are improvements to be made in data collection, modeling uncertainty, and communicating between fishers, managers, and scientists, the scientific methods used in the Northeast stock assessments are sound. Recommendations are made on how the stock assessment process can be improved.
