In wells sunk into these deposits three classes of material can generally be distinguished - first, a layer Of soil, varying in different localities from sand to heavy clay or gumbo, depending upon the character of the underlying material from which it has been derived; second, a layer of yellow, reddish, or bluish clay, more or less sandy in different places and grading into the overlying soil; and third, material composed of well-rounded quartz fragments, varying from quicksand to fine gravel, usually coarsest near the bot tom. Underlying this is the red shale, or keel, which forms the bedrock in this whole region. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Water Supply for Irrigation Classic Reprint

Download or read book Water Supply for Irrigation Classic Reprint written by Frederick Haynes Newell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Water Supply for Irrigation The total area upon which crops were raised by irrigation was, accord in g to the results obtained by the Eleventh Census, acres, or square miles. This applies to the year ending May 31, 1890, the census being taken during the following June. Comparing this area with the total land surface west of the one hundredth meridian, it is found to be approximately only four-tenths of 1 per cent. In other words, for every acre from which crops were obtained by irrigation there were nearly 250 acres of land most of which was not utilized in any way except for pasturage. The area of the land surface of the United States west of the one hundredth meridian and between it and the Pacific ocean is square miles, not including thirty-six counties of western Oregon and Washington. Within this great extent of country are nearly all possi ble combinations of soil and climate, ranging from the smooth, almost barren, plains with scanty vegetation to the high rough mountains, the peaks covered throughout the year with snow and the s10pes clothed with thick forests. In a broad way four great classes of land may be distinguished, according to the amount of moisture received or the water supply available, as shown principally by the character of the vegetation. The following table gives approximately the amount of land embraced in each of these great classes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Water-Supply and Irrigation Papers of the United States Geological Survey, 1897 This paper by Mr. Wilson is the first of a proposed series of publica tions relating to water supply and irrigation. The object in View in undertaking a new series is to afford an opportunity for prompt publi cation of short reports, generally popular in character, relating to the water resources and the methods of utilizing these, with especial ref erence to the employment of water in agriculture. To reply to ques tions arising in various parts of the country regarding the progress of the investigation of the water resources and the facts relating to the available supply of water for irrigation, power, or domestic use, it is necessary to have pamphlets which can be sent out freely, and which, in order to answer the particular needs of individuals or communities, will not be too general in character. The series of bulletins issued by the Survey would serve as such means of communication were it not for the fact that by law these must be sold, and thus can not be used for ofiicial purposes or for placing the information acquired by investiga tion at once in the hands of the persons seeking to know the facts. By the law authorizing this new series it is possible for the Survey to dis tribute these papers to correspondents and to the numerous volunteer assistants who at one time or another have kindly aided by replying to letters of inquiry or schedules asking for specific data. Without such opportunities for distribution of small publications the officers of the Survey are placed in an embarrassing position, from the fact that they are compelled to ask favors in the way of statements and data of various kinds and are yet unable in general to more than thank the persons who have freely given their time to the preparation of letters and the filling out of blanks. Even when these persons have asked for a copy of the publication embodying the information which they have furnished, it has not been possible for a bulletin to be sent unless paid for by some member of the Survey. Book On Artificial Underground Water Classic Reprint

Download or read book On Artificial Underground Water Classic Reprint written by Johan Gustaf Richert and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Artificial Underground Water From the most ancient times the clear and cool spring has been preferred to the tasteless water of the lake or river. A few decades ago people hardly knew what a spring was, they believed that it belonged to a mysterious underground vein which, from mere caprice, chose to come up to the surface, and the person that succeeded in getting water in a well had, by some peculiar chance, just hit on such a vein. As long as it was only a question of procuring the small quantities of water, which were requisite for the modest hygienic wants of the past centuries, it was, as a rule, not difficult to find sufficiently rich underground veins. Even in considerably large towns each owner of a house had in his yard a well and close by the unavoidable latrine. Between these there was a close connection, the result of which is characterized by Liebig's well-known drastic saying, that the urine of wells in towns was often considerably mixed up with ground-water. At last this state of affairs could no longer be tolerated and, the opinion of the people becoming more and more enlightened, they began to demand, that the towns should be supplied with unpolluted and serviceable drinking-water.
