Book Finding God in a Bag of Groceries

Download or read book Finding God in a Bag of Groceries written by Laura Lapins Willis and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2013-06-01 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If your pantry was empty, your children hungry, your electricity cut off for nonpayment, and you saw no prospect of support, what would you do? For a decade in a rural Tennessee community, you went to a shabby building behind a church and found Laura Willis. Running a program to help the needy, Laura discovered a world of people she never knew: the lonely and unemployed, chronically poor families, and middle-class folks surprised to be struggling in a great recession. And to each, she offered a bag of groceries, a compassionate ear, and a heart of love. Taking a tiny food pantry and watching it grow to feed hundreds, Laura learned about her own hunger for God and began to discern her own spiritual directions, learning how her calling card—a bag of groceries—could be a gift to others and to herself of abundance and grace.

  • Author : James B. Twitchell
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2007-09-18
  • ISBN : 1416545727
  • Pages : 337 pages

Download or read book Shopping for God written by James B. Twitchell and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2007-09-18 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not so long ago religion was a personal matter that was seldom discussed in public. No longer. Today religion is everywhere, from books to movies to television to the internet-to say nothing about politics. Now religion is marketed and advertised like any other product or service. How did this happen? And what does it mean for religion and for our culture? Just as we shop for goods and services, we shop for church. A couple of generations ago Americans remained in the faith they were born into. Today, many Americans change their denomination or religion, sometimes several times. Churches that know how to appeal to those shopping for God are thriving. Think megachurches. Churches that don't know how to do this or don't bother are fading away. Think mainline Protestant churches. Religion is now celebrated and shown off like a fashion accessory. We can wear our religious affiliation like a designer logo. But, says James Twitchell, this isn't because Americans are undergoing another Great Awakening; rather, it's a sign that religion providers-that is, churches-have learned how to market themselves. There is more competition among churches than ever in our history. Filling the pew is an exercise in salesmanship, and as with any marketing campaign, it requires establishing a brand identity. Successful pastors ("pastorpreneurs," Twitchell calls them) know how to speak the language of Madison Avenue as well as the language of the Bible. In this witty, engaging book, Twitchell describes his own experiences trying out different churches to discover who knows how to "do church" well. He takes readers into the land of karaoke Christianity, where old-style contemplative sedate religion has been transformed into a public, interactive event with giant-screen televisions, generic iconography (when there is any at all), and ample parking. Rarely has America's religious culture been examined so perceptively and so entertainingly. Shopping for God does for religion what Fast Food Nation has done for food.

Book excerpt: Picasso's artistic inspiration takes hold of young Emma's faith imagination in this beautifully illustrated debut picture book about how we all see God differently. “This urge to draw something beyond spectacular would not leave my side. ‘What should I draw?’ I thought. I sat quietly, listening to my mind and heart. That's when I heard their whisper and I decided to draw God.” Emma tries again and again and again to draw God, but her classmates can’t see God in any of her drawings. Emma finally realizes that she doesn’t need their approval. “I knew I had drawn God. God knew I had drawn God, and maybe Picasso knew, too. That finally felt like enough.” But when Emma returns to school on the following Monday, something beyond spectacular happens. Drawing God is a story for children to discover what inspires their very own faith imagination and to realize the contagious faith that lives powerfully within them. Book Good News for Weary Women

Download or read book Good News for Weary Women written by Elyse M. Fitzpatrick and published by Tyndale House. This book was released on 2014-08-22 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are you exhausted? Women today really do feel the weight of the world on their shoulders. Every morning we are greeted with a long list of to-dos: get the kids up and out the door on time, have a meaningful quiet time, put in a full day at the office, spend an hour at the gym, prepare a healthy and delicious meal (organic and locally grown, of course), and make sure the sink sparkles before you go to bed. Oh, and don’t forget to look great and smile while you’re doing it. These are all good things to do, of course. But the bigger problem occurs when we start to feel as if our worth is measured by our to-do lists. And the messages we receive at church, on Facebook, and from the media only perpetuate these unrealistic expectations, creating a relentless cycle of exhaustion. As Elyse Fitzpatrick has traveled this country, she has seen increasing evidence of this weariness epidemic invading our churches and communities. And she has good news for women everywhere: there is hope! God doesn’t judge us by our to-do lists. Instead, He calls us to faith. Free yourself today from the endless stream of bad advice and discover the true rest God offers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where are you at this moment? If your first reaction was to say, "I am in a book store," or "I am in my recliner," I would likely say the same thing. But what I am asking is where you are in your faith walk with God. Do you feel far from Him? Maybe you walk closely with Him and hear His voice in your life. Are you in a listening mode or are you tuned into the "noise" in your life, cluttered with things to do, places to go, and people to see? Maybe you picked up this book because you were curious how God could possibly whisper. Or maybe you needed to make a major decision and you thought this book might help. Or maybe you picked it up because when you saw "fudge" in the subtitle, you thought it might be a recipe book. It is a recipe book, in its own way, and for fun, you will find fudge recipes in the appendix. But I wrote this book to share some experiences of mine, and those of its contributors, about how we learned from our fudges and responded to God's nudges. God wants to free us from our self-made cocoons, or chrysalises, and watch us fly free like a butterfly. Liz Thompson lives in Grove City, Ohio, with her husband, Bob, and wire-haired dachshund, Toby Bear, who is her Certified Hearing Dog. In 2008, Liz's first book, Day by Day: The Chronicles of a Hard of Hearing Reporter was published by Gallaudet University Press. Book God Had His Hands on My Life

Download or read book God Had His Hands on My Life written by Stephanie Redd and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2018-07-25 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After many years of physical and spiritual deprivation, Stephanie Redd Johnson, acknowledged the call on her life from her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It was 1988. Later, she demonstrated her acceptance of this calling through water baptism, in accordance to Acts 2:38. Stephanie is actively thanking God for one of many miracles experienced in her life, the fruit of which was the gift of healing. She was miraculously healed completely of the lung disease known as Sarcoidosis after negative prognosis from physicians who pronounced blindness, impending lesions all over her body and later, dependence on an oxygen machine and death then would follow. She however refused to give up hope, after seeing the length to which the enemy would go to try to snuff out her life and abort the future, which was ahead of her. Armed with a never-fail attitude and the will to prove the doctors and other naysayers wrong, she began standing on The Word in Isaiah 53:1-5, which says, Who hath believed our report? Touching and agreeing with a powerful women of God taught her how to stand upon Gods Truth declaring I cannot die because I have a work to do, especially after being told what she would be doing by the Spirit of God. This confirmed the gift which was already within her and in which she naturally walks in, the Prophetic Healing ministry. As time would pass, she would come into a fuller knowledge of God in 1999, with impartation of what God was calling her to, line upon line and percept upon percept, calling her into full time ministry with the gift of teaching through demonstrating power.

Download or read book What God Wants You to Know written by Miranda Kay Hill Malik and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-06-20 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sadly, I have learned this book is more than an extreme and overwhelming truth. Unfortunately, the world that I thought I knew is as bogus as a three-dollar bill, for real! Development of certain science technology placed excessive wickedness into the stratosphere. Unfortunately, it will eventually lead the world down a perilous path and to their doomsday clock. You will discover some of the most maddening saga of deception such as hidden trust, and how they are using manipulation on a grand scale for everyone around the world. There are BIG lies that they use to twist your minds. This deliberate agenda is calculated towards major deceit with grimaced and hollered corruption. You will also discover how the intentional plan was deliberately done in secrecy; so that it would be unknown to you. Yet, from the day you were born, it had been sitting on your doorstep. You shall come to know these heinous misleading acts are done by a few men. These very few men are the real shakers who run the world. With that in mind, it would leave you on the side of the road scratching your head, but "hopefully" that should be a good thing, which will leave you spiraling over into the hands of our creator, God. This gut-wrenching truth and darkness of infidel are perpetrated from the political occult and the secrecy from the elite should awaken you from your sleep and open your eyes. Not only will you realize you have been miss-led and blinded, you would learn they used the force of mind control, basically, to control your way of living on a daily basis. Also without awareness they instigated slavery in their course of action by subliminal messages through TV, movies, music and religion to keep you from having self-preservation. Now the all seeing eye and Big Brother is minding your business at every streetlight and corner. Yes, I said it, you have no privacy and pretty soon the constitution will be torn to shreds as if it never existed. That is just the beginning to what is to come. These infamous few men are empowered by the occult world of pure evil and selfish greed. In addition, their actions are to corroborate a sinister plot that is to annihilate or sweep away billions of Gods children. Their goal is to rule over no more than 500,000,000 million people. This way they can have more control over the population. The ending results would lead the world into the NWO (New World Order). Now is the time to get your house in order and to save your soul. Because of the anatomy of knowledge and wisdom, you will understand the truth from God. In addition, the truth is relating imperative messages that only He delivers in His novel. Romans 15:13 13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace, as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
