Book excerpt: An Eater Best Cookbook of Fall 2020 • This groundbreaking new cookbook from chef, bestselling author, and TV star Marcus Samuelsson celebrates contemporary Black cooking in 150 extraordinarily delicious recipes. It is long past time to recognize Black excellence in the culinary world the same way it has been celebrated in the worlds of music, sports, literature, film, and the arts. Black cooks and creators have led American culture forward with indelible contributions of artistry and ingenuity from the start, but Black authorship has been consistently erased from the story of American food. Now, in The Rise, chef, author, and television star Marcus Samuelsson gathers together an unforgettable feast of food, culture, and history to highlight the diverse deliciousness of Black cooking today. Driven by a desire to fight against bias, reclaim Black culinary traditions, and energize a new generation of cooks, Marcus shares his own journey alongside 150 recipes in honor of dozens of top chefs, writers, and activists—with stories exploring their creativity and influence. Black cooking has always been more than “soul food,” with flavors tracing to the African continent, to the Caribbean, all over the United States, and beyond. Featuring a mix of everyday food and celebration cooking, this book also includes an introduction to the pantry of the African diaspora, alongside recipes such as: Chilled corn and tomato soup in honor of chef Mashama Bailey Grilled short ribs with a piri-piri marinade and saffron tapioca pudding in homage to authors Michael Twitty and Jessica B. Harris Crab curry with yams and mustard greens for Nyesha Arrington Spiced catfish with pumpkin leche de tigre to celebrate Edouardo Jordan Island jollof rice with a shout-out to Eric Adjepong Steak frites with plantain chips and green vinaigrette in tribute to Eric Gestel Tigernut custard tart with cinnamon poached pears in praise of Toni Tipton-Martin A stunning work of breadth and beauty, The Rise is more than a cookbook. Soon, however, January has more to worry about than keeping his beloved family fed and safe. During an elegant reception thrown by New Orleans' local Whig notables, the son of a prominent politician gets into a fist-fight with a rival over beautiful young flirt Marie-Joyeuse Maginot - and, the day after the rally is over, Marie-Joyeuse turns up dead. Book The American South in the Twentieth Century

Download or read book The American South in the Twentieth Century written by Craig S. Pascoe and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the South today, the sight of a Latina in a NASCAR T-shirt behind the register at an Asian grocery would hardly draw a second glance. That scenario, and our likely reaction to it, surely signals something important--but what? Here some of the region’s most respected and readable observers look across the past century to help us take stock of where the South is now and where it may be headed. Reflecting the writers’ deep interests in southern history, politics, literature, religion, and other matters, the essays engage in new ways some timeless concerns about the region: How has the South changed--or not changed? Has the South as a distinct region disappeared, or has it absorbed the many forces of change and still retained its cultural and social distinctiveness? Although the essays touch on an engaging diversity of topics including the USDA’s crop spraying policies, Tom Wolfe’s novel A Man in Full, and collegiate women’s soccer, they ultimately cluster around a common set of themes. These include race, segregation and the fall of Jim Crow, gender, cultural distinctiveness and identity, modernization, education, and urbanization. Mindful of the South’s reputation for insularity, the essays also gauge the impact of federal assistance, relocated industries, immigration, and other outside influences. As one contributor writes, and as all would acknowledge, those who undertake a project like this “should bear in mind that they are tracking a target moving constantly but often erratically.” The rewards of pondering a place as elusive, complex, and contradictory as the American South are on full display here.

Book excerpt: We are excited about introducing to you what we believe to be one of the most meaningful books you'll ever read. This book is the beginning of a project with a divine purpose to help turn the hearts of the fathers back to the children, to advocate for the victims of injustice, and uniting their voices to speak in the ears of lawmakers. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. To help create a sound and functional household for the underprivileged surrounding neighborhoods that would instill in them a desire to climb to higher heights; even to the extent of becoming entrepreneurs, and enabling them to do so. This book is part one of a memoir that illustrates many true and personal life experiences, such as government corruption, injustice, dysfunctional families, sexual intercourse, the love of money, parenting, government informants, and much more, based on how they're viewed through the mind of God as well as man. All to help stabilize the family and structuring it the way God intended for it to be. In the recent past, a study found that there were about 2.3 million people incarcerated here in the United States, which is more than any other country, with 140,610 serving a life sentence and two-thirds of them being black and Latino. Nearly one-third of the total number of inmates serving life has no possibility for parole, and sadly, many of which are nonviolent offenders. Surely we must demand change. Perry Malone is a first time author who is currently and temporarily incarcerated. While endeavoring to regain his freedom through the exposure of government corruption, Perry Malone not only surrendered his life to the Lord, but also discovered his ordained purpose and calling which is revealed within the pages of this book. He is now divorced with four children and six grandchildren.
