Book excerpt: Who would have believed a job interview would result in being whisked away from earth, against their will, to a medieval world embroiled in chaos across dimensions, ruled secretly by an elite council who, in their omnipotence, had not considered there could be unforeseen consequences? Their plan was simply to rule the totality of Alluvia. The Certamen of Straterra, a continuum of organized and controlled conflicts regulated through a complex set of rules, commonly referred to as the game was intended to cause and maintain balance not empower an evil that would care more about conquest than rules, more about power than the welfare of any other being, or would challenge their authority and assume control with ruthless efficiency. Greyson and Miry, each considered a pawn in the game, were selected and imprisoned separately with the extraordinary expectation of each giving birth to three representatives drawn from their lineage who have the innate characteristics necessary to stand as a picket against an evil that had not been defeated in 250 rotations of the game. And so the journey begins in the land of Alluvia. A mysterious and chaotic world of multiple dimensions and considerable diversity in populations, Flora and Fauna. Embrace the journey through this world of dwarves and dragons, shapeshifters and shaman, ogres and elves, humans and halflings, mage born and seers. A journey that delves deep into the nuances of life, love, hurt, and hate...the despair of war and the joy of brief respites from the chaos. Be warned, those who choose to enter this world will not emerge unaffected...the folk you meet will seep into your heart and never quite let you go...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work presents a model for novel compound interpretation using Cognitive Grammar and schema theory. The model, based on analysis of established compounds and responses to novel compounds, claims that speakers try using real-world schemas attached to both element nouns to construct a relationship between them by matching already established patterns. When this is impossible, speakers often "metaphorize" the head noun.

Book excerpt: Charmian Daniels (last seen in Murder in the Garden), chief metropolitan police superintendent of Central London, interrupts a medical leave when beautiful Vivien Charles, member of a witches' coven, is found fatally stabbed in her home, her corpse surrounded by cult objects. An autopsy reveals that Vivien was pregnant and the fetus deformed. Vivien's fellow witches, still reeling from the shock of her death, are dumbfounded by the finding, but sexy Joshua Fox, the lone male in the coven and laughingly called its warlock, is unsurprised. When Charmian learns that the primary duty of a warlock is to impregnate witches, the hapless man becomes the prime suspect--until he, too, is stabbed in his home. Every clue leads to the coven, but Charmian is unconvinced, and digs into Vivien's past to discover a more pedestrian kind of sorcery that might conjure up a killer. Melville serves up a balanced brew of career politics, the occult, and the psychology of murder.

Book excerpt: It is often said one should let sleeping dogs sleep. The same could be said for certain traditions long since laid to rest. There is often very good reason for both. Someone should have told Niko and his friends. There are many reasons why the 216 acres of dark grass, towering trees, suffocating shadows and unkempt buildings have been abandoned for over 25 years. Some reasons lay cushioned in reality and truth; others shrouded in mystery, secrecy and urban legend. Playing with darkness is the surest way for someone to discover their threshold for pain. And there exists no pain as intense or penetrating as fear. When Shawn, Paula, Arick, Lupe, Niko and Briana decide to rehash the tradition of disturbing this dark place nestled in a dark crevice of Prince George's County, Maryland, they quickly discover that waking the sleeping is answering the invitation to walk into your worst nightmare.

In 1918, Philadelphia was a city teeming with promise. Even as its young men went off to fight in the Great War, there were opportunities for a fresh start on its cobblestone streets. Into this bustling town, came Pauline Bright and her husband, filled with hope that they could now give their three daughters—Evelyn, Maggie, and Willa—a chance at a better life. But just months after they arrive, the Spanish Flu reaches the shores of America. As the pandemic claims more than twelve thousand victims in their adopted city, they find their lives left with a world that looks nothing like the one they knew. But even as they lose loved ones, they take in a baby orphaned by the disease who becomes their single source of hope. Amidst the tragedy and challenges, they learn what they cannot live without—and what they are willing to do about it. As Bright as Heaven is the compelling story of a mother and her daughters who find themselves in a harsh world not of their making, which will either crush their resolve to survive or purify it.

Book Human Knowledge and Human Nature

Download or read book Human Knowledge and Human Nature written by Peter Carruthers and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1992 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary debates in epistemology devote much attention to the nature of knowledge, but neglect the question of its sources. The distinctive focus of Human Knowledge and Human Nature is on the latter, especially on the question of innateness. Peter Carruthers's aim is to transform and reinvigorate contemporary empiricism, while also providing an introduction to a range of issues in the theory of knowledge. He gives a lively presentation and assessment of the claims of classical empiricism, particularly its denial of substantive a priori knowledge and also of innate knowledge. He argues that we would be right to reject the substantive a priori but not innateness, and then presents a novel account of the main motivation behind empiricism, which leaves contemporary empiricists free to accept innate knowledge and concepts. He closes with a discussion of scepticism, arguing that acceptance of innate concepts may lead to a decisive resolution of the problem in favour of realism. The book will be of equal interest to students of the history of modern philosophy and the theory of knowledge, and their teachers. It provides a new way of looking at classical empiricism, and should lead to a renewal of interest in the innateness issue in epistemology.

Book The Schocken Book of Modern Sephardic Literature

Download or read book The Schocken Book of Modern Sephardic Literature written by Ilan Stavans and published by Schocken. This book was released on 2010-02-10 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492 gave rise to a series of rich, diverse diasporas that were interconnected through a common vision and joie de vivre. The exodus took these Sephardim to other European countries; to North Africa, Asia Minor, and South America; and, eventually, to the American colonies. In each community new literary and artistic forms grew out of the melding of their Judeo-Spanish legacy with the cultures of their host countries, and that process has continued to the present day. This multilingual tradition brought with it both opportunities and challenges that will resonate within any contemporary culture: the status of minorities within the larger society; the tension between a civil, democratic tradition and the anti-Semitism ready to undermine it; and the opposing forces of religion and secularism. Ilan Stavans has been described by The Washington Post as “Latin America’s liveliest and boldest critic and most innovative cultural enthusiast.” And the Forward calls him “a maverick intellectual whose canonical work has already produced a whole array of marvels that are redefining Jewishness.” This new anthology contains fiction, memoirs, essays, and poetry from twenty-eight writers who span more than 150 years. Included are Emma Lazarus’s legendary poem “The New Colossus,” inscribed on the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty; the hypnotizing prose of Greece-born, Switzerland-based Albert Cohen; Nobel—Prize winner Elias Canetti’s ruminations on Europe before World War II; Albert Memmi’s identity quest as an Arab Jew in France; Primo Levi’s testimony on the Holocaust; and A. B. Yehoshua’s epic stories set in Israel today. When read together, these explorations offer an astonishingly incisive collective portrait of the “other Jews,” Sephardim who long for la España perdida, their lost ancestral home, even as they create a vibrant, multifaceted literary tradition in exile.

Book excerpt: From the bestselling author of The Wife—Meg Wolitzer’s “hilariously moving, sharply written novel” (USA TODAY), hailed by critics and loved by readers worldwide, with its “dead-on observations about sex, marriage, and the family ties that strangle and bind” (Cleveland Plain Dealer). Crackling with intelligence and humor, The Position is the masterful story of one extraordinary family at the hilarious height of the sexual revolution—and through the thirty-year hangover that followed. In 1975, Paul and Roz Mellow write a bestselling Joy of Sex-type book that mortifies their four school-aged children and ultimately changes the shape of the family forever. Thirty years later, as the now dispersed family members argue over whether to reissue the book, we follow the complicated lives of each of the grown children and their conflicts in love, work, marriage, parenting, and, of course, sex—all shadowed by the indelible specter of their highly sexualized parents. Insightful, panoramic, and compulsively readable, The Position is an American original.
