Book Clever Maids

Download or read book Clever Maids written by Valerie Paradiz and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2009-04-27 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The famous fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm - stories like Snow White , Red Riding Hood , and Rumplestiltskin - are know to millions of people around the world and are deeply embedded in the collective psyche. In this charming account, writer and scholar Valerie Paradiz reveals the true story of how the fairy tales came to be. Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, collectors and editors of more than 200 folk stories, were major German intellects of the nineteenth century, contemporaries of Goethe and Schiller. But as Paradiz reveals here, the romantic image of the two brothers traveling the countryside, transcribing tales told to them by peasants, is a far cry from the truth. In fact, more than half the fairy tales the Grimm brothers collected were actually contributed by their educated female friends from the bourgeois and aristocratic classes. While German folkloric scholars-all of them male-fancied themselves the keepers of the cultural flame, it was a handful of women who ensured that millions would know the stories of Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella by heart. Set against the backdrop of the chaotic Napoleonic wars and the years of high German romanticism, Clever Maids chronicles one of the most fascinating literary collaborations in European history and brilliantly captures the intellectual spirit of the men and women of the age. Even more, it illuminates the ways in which the Grimm tales, with their mythic portrayals of courage, sacrifice, and betrayal, still speak so powerfully to us today.

Book The Original Folk and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm

Download or read book The Original Folk and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm written by Jacob Grimm and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2016-10-13 with total page 567 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The original vision of Grimms' tales in English for the first time When Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm published their Children's and Household Tales in 1812, followed by a second volume in 1815, they had no idea that such stories as "Rapunzel," "Hansel and Gretel," and "Cinderella" would become the most celebrated in the world. Yet few people today are familiar with the majority of tales from the two early volumes, since in the next four decades the Grimms would publish six other editions, each extensively revised in content and style. For the very first time, The Original Folk and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm makes available in English all 156 stories from the 1812 and 1815 editions. These narrative gems, newly translated and brought together in one beautiful book, are accompanied by sumptuous new illustrations from award-winning artist Andrea Dezsö. From "The Frog King" to "The Golden Key," wondrous worlds unfold—heroes and heroines are rewarded, weaker animals triumph over the strong, and simple bumpkins prove themselves not so simple after all. Esteemed fairy tale scholar Jack Zipes offers accessible translations that retain the spare description and engaging storytelling style of the originals. Indeed, this is what makes the tales from the 1812 and 1815 editions unique—they reflect diverse voices, rooted in oral traditions, that are absent from the Grimms' later, more embellished collections of tales. Zipes's introduction gives important historical context, and the book includes the Grimms' prefaces and notes. A delight to read, The Original Folk and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm presents these peerless stories to a whole new generation of readers.

Book Tales of the Brothers Grimm

Download or read book Tales of the Brothers Grimm written by Jacob Grimm and published by Damiani. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Tales of the Brothers Grimm, 36 celebrated and lesser-known of the unsanitized fairy tales collected by the illustrious brothers were carefully chosen by artist Natalie Frank, reinterpreted in 75 gouache and chalk pastel drawings, and cast in a Surrealist dreamscape. This volume, designed by Marian Bantjes, is the largest collection of Grimms' Fairy Tales ever illustrated by a fine artist. Frank's irreverent palette, sophisticated use of color and inventive depiction of these dark narratives capture the original stories with a contemporary and unflinching eye. Each of the tales opens with a hand-drawn title page and is framed by a unique border; small drawings punctuate each story in the tradition of classic fairy-tale editions. The foremost Grimm scholar, Jack Zipes, introduces the book.

Book Grimms Fairytales a Book That Inspired Tolkien

Download or read book Grimms Fairytales a Book That Inspired Tolkien written by Grimm Jacob and Wilhelm and published by Leaves of Gold Press. This book was released on 2018-07 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: GRIMMS' FAIRY TALES - A BOOK THAT INSPIRED TOLKIEN. With Original Illustrations. In his essay "On Fairy Stories", Professor JRR Tolkien made specific mention of the brothers Grimm. The brothers, Jacob and Wilhelm, together travelled rural Germany collecting and publishing old, traditional folktales. They are among the most well-known storytellers of German folklore. Their first collection, "Children's and Household Tales", was published in 1812. In the nineteenth century Europe, Britain and the British colonies experienced a flowering of Romanticism in the form of art, architecture, poetry, literature, folklore and folk tales. The latter, in particular, played a major role in the development of Tolkien's Middle-earth mythology. Tolkien mined the folklore of the Grimm brothers for literary gems. In his essay he mentioned his love of a tale in this collection by the name of The Juniper Tree (renamed The Almond Tree for British audiences). The 1882 edition of Household Stories was beautifully illustrated by Walter Crane (1845-1915) - an influential member of the Arts and Crafts movement like William Morris, whose works of fantasy were also among Tolkien's favorites. "Certain artists did provide visual sources for Tolkien's writing, particularly in their illustrations for the fairy tales that so appealed to him." So writes Mary Podles in her article "Tolkien and the New Art: Visual Sources for The Lord of the Rings". "Crane illustrated a version of 'Grimms' Fairy Tales' that may in several instances have inspired specific scenes and incidents in 'The Lord of the Rings'. Often Crane added details to his black-and-white illustrations that were not in Grimm, but proved to be the very ones that stuck in Tolkien's memory and resurfaced in his novel." This new edition, a replica of the original, contains more than 180 pictures, embellishments and ornate initials. Crane's illustrations for the fairy tales that Tolkien read as a boy do justice to the richness, strangeness and beauty of the folklore which fired the imagination of the author of "The Lord of the Rings".

Book The Original 1812 Grimm Fairy Tales

Download or read book The Original 1812 Grimm Fairy Tales written by Oliver Loo and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-09-19 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Grimms Tales as you have never experienced them before – complete, accurate, and authentic - exactly as the Grimms wrote them 200 years ago. A completely new, cover to cover translation with extensive notes and commentary for the 200th anniversary translated in a new style that preserves the original texts in a way that has never been done before. There are 34 stories in the original 1812 edition that never appear in any of the later editions. In the 1812 first edition of the tales, the Grimms also included an extensive 60 page appendix which discussed the oral and literary sources of the tales and often times one or more other versions of the stories. The 1812 appendix was never published in any English versions, so the 60 “new” stories and fragments found therein have been almost entirely unknown to English readers for last 200 years. The appendix is a lost “gem” and arguably as important as the stories themselves.

This book was released on 2023-12-23 with total page 846 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compilation of fairy tales includes the complete canon of over 200 tales that has become a beloved set of classical stories the world over. Grimm brothers rediscovered a host of fairy tales, telling of princes and princesses in their castles, witches in their towers and forests, of giants and dwarfs, of fabulous animals and dark deeds. Together with the well-known tales of "Rapunzel", "The Goose-Girl", "Sleeping Beauty", "Hansel and Gretel" and "Snow White" there are the darker tales such as "Death's Messengers" which deserve to be better known, and which will appeal not only to all who are interested in the history of folklore, but also to all those who simply love good storytelling. The two brothers wished to preserve their German folklore in a collection of tales that they believed had been handed down for generations. When they began in 1812 they had just 86 stories that rather harshly reflected the difficult life of European peasantry. Subsequent editions would grow to hold over 200 tales. As time passed, the Brothers Grimm found that their collection of fairy tales, with all of its royalty, magical creatures, and brave adventures, entranced those who read them. Jacob Grimm (1785-1863) and his brother Wilhelm Grimm (1786-1859) were philologists and folklorists.
