COVID-19 has changed fundamental concepts of ageing, maturity and mortality. With exciting new work from Helen Garner, Charlotte Wood, Gabbie Stroud, David Sinclair, Vicki Laveau-Harvie, Samuel Wagan Watson, Andrew Stafford, Jay Phillips, Jane R Goodall, Glenn A Albrecht, Leah Kaminsky, Ailsa Piper and many more, Griffith Review 68: Getting On offers an insightful exploration of the changing truths of ageing – as well as celebrating the triumph of longevity. It's a timely look at the question of how we age successfully – as individuals, as a society, as a population.

Book Griffith REVIEW 40

Download or read book Griffith REVIEW 40 written by Julianne Schultz and published by Text Publishing. This book was released on 2013-04-24 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A timely and groundbreaking edition of Griffith REVIEW exploring the changing relationship between women and power in public and private spheres, in Australia and the world. In one generation, women have taken control of their economic fate, risen to the most powerful political positions in the land and climbed to the top of the corporate ladder. Yet a misogynist undercurrent persists. The impact of this gender revolution extends across society—from homes to schools, politics to the military, marriage to media—challenging long-held verities. In Women & Power, Griffith REVIEW brings an international perspective to these dilemmas, exploring the changing relationship between women and power in public and private spheres, here and overseas. Have social changes caught up with economic changes? Are children paying a price for the rise of the two-income household? Can women have it all? Does it matter whether Julia Gillard’s fruit bowl is empty or full? Women & Power offers provocative and insightful perspectives on these questions. The empowerment of women was one of the great changes of the past fifty years—handling its consequences remains a pressing challenge.

Book The Realities and Futures of Work

Download or read book The Realities and Futures of Work written by David Peetz and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2019-09-27 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do we know about the current realities of work and its likely futures? What choices must we make and how will they affect those futures? Many books about the future of work start by talking about the latest technology, and focus on how technology is going to change the way we work. And there is no doubt that technology will have huge impacts. However, to really understand the direction in which work is going, and the impact that technology and other forces will have, we need to first understand where we are. This book covers topics ranging from the ‘mega-drivers of change’ at work, power, globalisation and financialisation, to management, workers, digitalisation, the gig economy, gender, climate change, regulation and deregulation. In doing this, it refers to some of the great works of science fiction. It demolishes several myths, such as that the employment relationship is doomed, that we are all heading to becoming ‘freelancers’ or ‘gig workers’ one day, that most jobs will be destroyed by technological change, that the growth in jobs will mainly be in STEM fields, that we will no longer value collectivism as we will all be ‘individuals’, or that the death of unionism is inevitable. The Realities and Futures of Work also rejects the idea of technological determinism—that whatever will be, will be, thanks to technological change—and so it refuses to accept that we simply need to prepare to adapt ourselves to the future by judicious training since there is nothing else we can do about it. Instead, this book provides a realistic basis for thinking about both the present and the future. It emphasises the choices we make, and the implications of those choices for the future of work.

Book Griffith Review 57

Leaders are rising to power who promise to respond to the voice of the people—people who are aggrieved and resentful, feeling the sting of inequality and the uncertainty of a new economic order. Perils of Populism makes sense of why we are in this moment, what it feels like, where it might lead, what we can learn from the past. It goes beyond the headlines. This edition features winners of the Griffith Review Queensland Writers Fellowships, and will explore the causes and nuances of populism—building a conscience, confronting sexual abuse, addressing climate change deniers, navigating an obstructive bureaucracy, coming face to face with religious cults and discovering the enduring kindness of strangers.

Book Critical Reflections and Politics on Advancing Women in the Academy

Download or read book Critical Reflections and Politics on Advancing Women in the Academy written by Moeke-Pickering, Taima and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2020-04-17 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women in the Academy are raising issues of pay parity, equal representation on committees, increased leadership positions, stories of resilience, and mentorship espousing changes at all levels including teaching, research, and administration. These strategies demand interrogation, and larger questions are being asked about the place of women empowerment worldviews in the dominant intellectual traditions of the Academy. Further, the trend to make changes requires an exploration of new transformational approaches that draw on critical theory to resist discrimination, sexism, and racism and support resistance and sustainable empowerment strategies. Critical Reflections and Politics on Advancing Women in the Academy is a critical scholarly publication that seeks to make the Academy responsive and inclusive for women advancement and sustainable empowerment strategies by broadening the understanding of why women in the Academy are overlooked in leadership positions, why there is a pay parity deficit, and what is being done to change the situation. Featuring a wide range of topics such as mentorship, curriculum design, and equality, this book is ideal for policymakers, academicians, deans, provosts, chancellors, administrators, researchers, and students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australian politics and national life are trapped in a permanent present. There are few opportunities to imagine the future, and even fewer to create it. Politics, commerce, media all focus relentlessly on the here and now. This breeds a corrosive cynicism. It is time to envisage the future, without fear, as a landscape to be won through human striving and expression. Contributors include Al Gore, Tim Flannery, Maria Tumarkin, Anthony Funnel, Margaret Simons, Tony Birch, Don Henry, Ashley Hay, Leah Kaminsky, Graeme Davison, Tony Davis, Jane Gleeson-White and many more.
