Little evidence exists of school counselors' academic preparation in grief counseling. The purpose of this research study was to determine how CACREP school counseling programs prepare school counselors in the areas of grief and loss, including course delivery methods, included curriculum areas, and reasons for exclusion. A quantitative, descriptive design was utilized. The "School Counselors Preparation in Grief/Loss and Substance Abuse Counseling" survey was designed for data collection and sent to the 150 United States CACREP accredited school counseling programs. A total of 79 programs responded, resulting in a 53% response rate. Research results found that 40% of responding CACREP programs did not offer any grief and loss preparation to their pre-service school counselors. Sixty percent indicated providing some training. Data show that 11% of programs required a course and 50% offered an elective course. Additionally, 48% of respondents taught a module on grief and loss within a required course, and 13% through a module in an elective course. Results found 6 respondents included all 17 suggested curriculum areas, while the mean for curricula inclusion was 11 areas. Research indicated 78% of programs not offering grief and loss cited a lack of room to add more credits as their exclusion rationale. Furthermore 35% of respondents did not offer curriculum because it was not a CACREP requirement. Lacking trained staff and financial reasons were both reported by 25% of programs as reasons for non-inclusion. Facing grief and loss are realities of life. Helping students to acknowledge and cope with these realities is a necessary task, as loss is a normal, universal experience, encountered repeatedly (Lenhardt, 1997). CACREP standards position that counselor education programs will prepare students to meet the real life counseling situations they will face while working in schools (CACREP, 2001). Research results indicated an inconsistent delivery of appropriate training in grief and loss among responding CACREP school counseling programs. Counselor education programs may wish to examine if they are ethically and effectively preparing their 21st century graduates. Recommendations and limitations are included.

Grief can impact counselors’ wellness and result in emotional impairment. CACREP standards do not require training in grief counseling. Thus, there are vacancies in understanding the influence of grief and a lack of preparation in navigation and dialogue of grief in counselor education programs. This qualitative study explored the phenomenological experiences of how grief influences counselor identity. The methodology used in this study was photovoice with interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). Photovoice allowed participants to describe their experiences through their own lens by capturing photographs and IPA strengthened this methodology to illuminate the meaning reconstruction process of participants. The major findings demonstrated that grief and meaning making of counselors is active, relational, and driven by understanding emotions. Participants experienced social validation for their changed selves when they observed an enhancement of their counseling skills; therefore, they viewed their grief with a positive or meaningful underpinning and informing their counselor identity. The findings, implications for counselors, supervisors, and counselor education are discussed and suggestion are made for future research.

Approximately 89.7% of U.S. residents reported experiencing at least one post-traumatic stress level event (Kilpatrick et al., 2013) as defined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder (5th ed.). Furthermore, trauma exposure has been recognized as a high priority public health risk (Beck & Sloan, 2012; Cook & Newman, 2014; U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2003). Events including the war in Afghanistan, devastating natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina, and the terrorist attacks of September 11th have increased societal awareness of trauma and the potentially adverse psychological and physical consequences of exposure. This heightened awareness is expected to increase the number of trauma survivors recognizing the effects of trauma, and in turn, increase the proportion of individuals seeking mental health services. Since counselors working in various mental health settings will most likely be working with survivors of trauma, it is imperative that their education include the necessary information leading to a foundation of competence (Layne et al., 2014). Although not all counselors who encounter trauma-related issues are expected to have a specialty in trauma work, there is an increased need for trauma-informed care as counselors-in-training encounter trauma-exposed populations in their pre-service training (The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 2014). Despite the high rates of trauma-exposure among U.S. residents, increased awareness of the effects of trauma, and the growing base of scientific literature, extensive coverage of trauma is not a core component of the standard curricula in graduate counseling programs (Courtois & Gold, 2009; Layne et al., 2014; Litz & Salters-Pedneault, 2008; Logeran et al., 2004). Furthermore, official trauma counseling competencies to inform the education and training of counselors have not yet been identified (Layne et al., 2014; Mattar, 2010; Turkus, 2013). Counselor educators are challenged with integrating the appropriate trauma training and education, while trying to meet the many program goals related to program and institutional accreditation standards. However, trauma-informed training, a holistic, person-centered approach that incorporates the biological, psychological, cultural, and social impact of trauma on an individual (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration [SAMHSA], 2014), requires students to possess unique knowledge, skills, and attitudes. Counselor educators must also consider the unique nature of the topic of trauma and the pedagogical approaches they use to effectively facilitate student learning. When competencies or guidelines are lacking within a certain research area, consensus opinion from experts, aids in providing a framework for effective development and practice (Powell, 2003). This study utilized the Delphi method to capture multiple perspectives and explore consensus opinions among experts regarding the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and teaching practices counselor educators deemed as foundational to prepare master's counseling students to encounter trauma-exposed individuals. Second, by drawing from the collective opinions of counselor educators with expertise in trauma treatment, supervision, and education, the study sought to establish a baseline and move towards the development of a set of guidelines for trauma training and education specific to the field of counseling, rather than adapting or adopting trauma guidelines and competencies developed by other disciplines. The findings of the current study arose out of the belief system of counseling professionals and may serve as an initial framework to support the professional development and training of counselor educators by providing an empirically derived set of trauma education and training guidelines. Book excerpt: Counselors regularly engage in grief counseling with clients following the loss of a loved one, regardless of their training to work with issues related to death and grief. Instead, many counselors may rely on their own experiences with death and grief while working with grieving clients. While prior research has identified the use of personal experience to inform grief counseling practices, there is a scarcity of studies which explore how the personal experiences of counselors who have experienced grief inform their work with grieving clients. This qualitative study explored the experience of 12 Licensed Professional Counselors (LPC’s), who have previously experienced grief, and who are now working with grieving clients. Each participant was interviewed about their experiences with grief and how those experiences influence the work they do with clients who are grieving. Grounded theory analysis was utilized to generate a theory to help provide an understanding of how the participants of this study practice grief counseling with clients who are grieving. The theory titled Factors that Influence Counselors Who Have Experienced Grief Engaged in Grief Counseling emerged following grounded theory analysis, and is comprised of eight themes that emerged from participants regarding their work with grieving clients. The eight themes identified in this study are: 1) personal experiences of grief; 2) training in grief counseling; 3) religion and spirituality; 4) meaning making; 5) societal norms; 6) way of being; 7) acknowledging the experience of grief; and 8) actions. The findings of this study provide a meaningful contribution to the field of counseling by providing a groundwork for understanding influences for counselors who have experienced their own grief as they work with grieving clients. This study serves to fill gaps in the literature, as the majority of studies related to death and grief in counseling focus on clients and counselors-in-training rather than the professional counselors providing counseling services. Implications for Counselor Education and future research are also discussed.
