Book excerpt: "I want to adopt a son." "Is this a joke? You don't even like children." "I don't dislike them. I just never saw the point before." "And what's the point?""Six consecutive headshots with a scopeless J5-40. He's eleven. They're going to give him a life sentence for it, Arin, it's a real shame." "Have you met this child?" "No." "Do you know why he did it?" "Not yet. I heard something about child abuse at his foster home." "So not only do you want to adopt, you want to adopt an abused and probably mentally unstable prepubescent with a talent for killing people." "Yes. Will you help me?" "Denez, you're insane." "Please, Arin.""I just don't understand where you got the idea. You made such fun of me for taking an eight-year-old on as an Apprentice, calling me a babysitter, asking if I needed spare tissues to wipe his nose-" "And it's been good. I haven't seen you this happy for a long time." "I couldn't have asked for a better Apprentice than Alvis. He's smart, good humored, eager to learn-- This child you're talking about, on the other hand, this murderer-" "I know he's not going to be like Alvis. I wouldn't know what to do with a kid like Alvis." "And you think you'd know what to do with a psychopath?" Denez laughed. "If it doesn't work out, I can always just shoot him. He's already got a life sentence, who the fuck's going to care?" "And if he shoots you first?" "Just because I'm not going on missions doesn't mean I'm not a soldier of the Alexandrian Guard. I'll shoot first. If it comes to that. It will all be fine, Arin, if you just help me bring him here. Help me bring Louis home." --- Soldiers in Grey is a coming-of-age story set in a sci-fi/fantasy multiverse

Book Soldier

  • Author : Phil Rutherford
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2017-08-05

  • Pages : 806 pages

Download or read book Soldier written by Phil Rutherford and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-08-05 with total page 806 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soldier presents a magnificent collection of highly detailed illustrations depicting uniforms worn by the military forces of this nation from colonial times to the modern era. Accompanying each illustration is the history of the uniform and equipment portrayed and the men and women who wore the uniform and the circumstances of their service. This is a book rich in colour and historical narrative. Soldier is much more than simply a description of military uniforms and equipment. Phil Rutherford has spent over 20 years searching for the roots of Australia’s modern army, analysing trends both in dress and in the military art itself. In doing so he has discovered that there is very little about the uniforms worn and the equipment carried by today’s soldiers that can truly be called its own. Even the most iconic symbol of the Australian army, the slouch hat, was not invented by a Victorian volunteer as popular rumour suggests, but was worn by troops in seventeenth-century Europe. In fact, there are significant elements of the army’s dress and equipment, such as the badges of rank worn by both soldiers and officers, which can be traced to the days of knights in shining armour. Soldier seeks to map the links between the army’s modern dress and its earliest antecedents, describing the formation and history of Australia’s army, from the perspective of both the regular and reserve soldiers. This book also reveals the story behind the soldiers themselves — the men and women who wore these uniforms — and the times in which they served since the first volunteers and militias were raised to protect the lives and property of the earliest settlers from adversaries both real and imagined.

Book Sir Charles Grey First Earl Grey

Download or read book Sir Charles Grey First Earl Grey written by Paul David Nelson and published by Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considering Grey's importance, and the prominence of the family he helped to found, it is surprising that he has been neglected by history. Only a short sketch in the Dictionary of National Biography, and an article by Sir John Fortescue in the Edinburgh Review have ever attempted even perfunctory assessments of his life. As a man and an army officer, Grey represented some of the best qualities of eighteenth-century British civilization. In America, he fought during the War of American Independence and in 1794 in the West Indies against France. Hence, as Nelson shows, his career is important in American History. Given his long service to the British nation in all her wars from 1744 to 1800, it is clear from Nelson's account that Grey is an important character in British history as well. During his lifetime, Grey proved himself a reliable and successful soldier, earning and deserving all his honors: Knight of the Bath in 1782, baron in 1801, viscount and earl in 1806.

As Chief of the General Staff during the Vietnam War, he oversaw a significant re-organisation of the Army as he fought a war under political and resource restrictions. In this unique biography, Jeffrey Grey shows how Daly prepared himself for the challenges of command in a time of great political upheaval. A Soldier's Soldier examines Daly's career from his entry to Duntroon in the early 1930s until his retirement forty years later, covering the key issues in the development of the Australian Army along the way. Book Italian soldier in North Africa 1941 43

Download or read book Italian soldier in North Africa 1941 43 written by Piero Crociani and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-11-20 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the attention paid to the Afrikakorps over the years, it was the numerically far superior forces of the Italian Army that held the line and formed the bulk of the fighting power available to the Axis powers during the War in the Desert from 1941 through to 1943. Their performance has been unfairly criticised over the years – the best units of the Italian Army were equal to those of the British and Germans – but they suffered from a lack of mobility and poor equipment that made it impossible for them to meet mobile British forces on anywhere near equal terms. Despite this, the Italian Army went through many changes through the period, with the introduction of a variety of elite units – armoured, mechanised and parachute divisions that did much to restore the fighting reputation of the Italian soldier in the desert war. Their German allies belatedly acknowledged this with the redesignation of Panzerarmee Afrika as 1st Italian Army in February 1943. This title details recruitment, organisation and experience of the Italian forces in this theatre, casting new light on a force whose fighting power and capabilities have been unfairly ignored and maligned for too long.

Book Grey Ghost

  • Author : Dr. Bill Grey
  • Publisher : Dog Ear Publishing

  • ISBN : 1457560917
  • Pages : 272 pages

Download or read book Grey Ghost written by Dr. Bill Grey and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2018-06-11 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grey Ghost is the story of a professional soldier’s struggle for survival and freedom during the cataclysm of war in the World War II European Theater of Operations between mid-1943 and mid-1945, as well as his continued exposure to combat in the Korean Conflict. This story carries the reader through the beginnings of war for America and onto the frontlines of aerial combat in a B-17 Flying Fortress with Sergeant Frank Grey and his crew. It delivers the reader into the hands of the enemy—Nazi Germany—and onto the long, painful journey of captivity of prisoners of war. For Sergeant Grey, the path from captivity to freedom would take numerous unpredictable twists over a period of almost two years, eventually leading him into Yugoslavia to fight with guerilla units under the leadership of General Draja Mihailovich, and finally to freedom in late May of 1945. The details of Sergeant Grey’s escape and recapture, beatings by the Gestapo, and solitary confinement— save one episode of brilliant thinking, comradery, and courage by a small group of POWs who hid Sergeant Grey within the wires of Stalag 17B for four months— have never been fully disclosed to the American public. Sergeant Grey was initially hidden in an escape tunnel while Gestapo, SS troops, and attack dogs searched for him. He became known as the Grey Ghost by the Germans. Coauthor Ned Handy chronicled this event brilliantly within the story of his own POW experience, a book titled The Flame Keepers (2004). That episode reveals the tremendous depth and significance of the human condition, conveying the face of war, during both wartime events and the aftermath as experienced by combat veterans reclaiming their personal lives. The experience of war did not end for Frank Grey on the European continent. Within a few years of the end of World War II, having continued his commitment to the service of his country, he entered into yet another perilous fight: the Korean Conflict. He flew fifty-seven missions over North Korea as a B-29 tailgunner—a commitment that was filled with constant risk and uncertainty. This true story has a deep, significant message for all readers— but especially for American veterans and their families. The strong messages of commitment, courage, and sacrifice can be reflected upon, considering the increased uncertainties of international events on our horizon.
