Download or read book Gretsch s Lost Weekend written by Tobye Merril and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-14 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gretsch's Lost Weekend is a chronological history of the Gretsch guitars and amplifiers that were made in Booneville, Arkansas from 1970 to 1981.The DH Baldwin Piano and Organ Company of Cincinnati, Ohio acquired Gretsch in 1967 shortly after acquiring the Burns Guitar Company of England. In late 1970 they moved all Gretsch instrument production to two converted dairy barns in rural Arkansas The Baldwin-era is despised by many Gretsch purists who only favor the 1950's,60's and current models. This book clears up many of the myths and misconceptions surrounding the design, functionality and playability of these instruments. Gretsch's Lost Weekend is not just a book about guitars. It also tells the story of the decent, hard-working people of Booneville, Arkansas and Cincinnati, Ohio who went to great lengths to keep an iconic American guitar and drum brand alive until it could be reacquired in 1984 by it's heir, Fred W. Gretsch. This book covers everything from prototypes to pricelists. From factory fires to the purchase of Kustom in 1979. It's all told in the words of the people who were there. There were successes as well as failures and everything in between. Often criticized, they were ahead of their time in many ways. Gretsch's Lost Weekend will leave the reader with a new understanding and hopefully a new appreciation of the people and the great instruments they made.

Download or read book Gear Acquisition Syndrome written by Jan-Peter Herbst and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gear Acquisition Syndrome, also known as GAS, is commonly understood as the musicians unrelenting urge to buy and own instruments and equipment as an anticipated catalyst of creative energy and bringer of happiness. For many musicians, it involves the unavoidable compulsion to spend money one does not have on gear perhaps not even needed. The urge is directed by the belief that acquiring another instrument will make one a better player. This book pioneers research into the complex phenomenon named GAS from a variety of disciplines, including popular music studies and music technology, cultural and leisure studies, consumption research, sociology, psychology and psychiatry. The newly created theoretical framework and empirical studies of online communities and offline music stores allow the study to consider musical, social and personal motives, which influence the way musicians think about and deal with equipment. As is shown, GAS encompasses a variety of practices and psychological processes. In an often life-long endeavour, upgrading the rig is accompanied by musical learning processes in popular music.
Download or read book Chaos written by Tom O'Neill and published by Little, Brown. This book was released on 2019-06-25 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A journalist's twenty-year fascination with the Manson murders leads to "gobsmacking" (The Ringer) new revelations about the FBI's involvement in this "kaleidoscopic" (The New York Times) reassessment of an infamous case in American history. Over two grim nights in Los Angeles, the young followers of Charles Manson murdered seven people, including the actress Sharon Tate, then eight months pregnant. With no mercy and seemingly no motive, the Manson Family followed their leader's every order -- their crimes lit a flame of paranoia across the nation, spelling the end of the sixties. Manson became one of history's most infamous criminals, his name forever attached to an era when charlatans mixed with prodigies, free love was as possible as brainwashing, and utopia -- or dystopia -- was just an acid trip away. Twenty years ago, when journalist Tom O'Neill was reporting a magazine piece about the murders, he worried there was nothing new to say. Then he unearthed shocking evidence of a cover-up behind the "official" story, including police carelessness, legal misconduct, and potential surveillance by intelligence agents. When a tense interview with Vincent Bugliosi -- prosecutor of the Manson Family and author of Helter Skelter -- turned a friendly source into a nemesis, O'Neill knew he was onto something. But every discovery brought more questions: Who were Manson's real friends in Hollywood, and how far would they go to hide their ties? Why didn't law enforcement, including Manson's own parole officer, act on their many chances to stop him? And how did Manson -- an illiterate ex-con -- turn a group of peaceful hippies into remorseless killers? O'Neill's quest for the truth led him from reclusive celebrities to seasoned spies, from San Francisco's summer of love to the shadowy sites of the CIA's mind-control experiments, on a trail rife with shady cover-ups and suspicious coincidences. The product of two decades of reporting, hundreds of new interviews, and dozens of never-before-seen documents from the LAPD, the FBI, and the CIA, Chaos mounts an argument that could be, according to Los Angeles Deputy District Attorney Steven Kay, strong enough to overturn the verdicts on the Manson murders. This is a book that overturns our understanding of a pivotal time in American history.
