Book Gregory S New York Brigade

Download or read book Gregory S New York Brigade written by Valgene L. Dunham and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2015-12-11 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the beginning of October 1864, the only equipment most Union soldiers near Petersburg, Virginia, needed was a shovel--including Gen. Edgar Gregorys new reserve brigade, which was digging trenches around the besieged city. Most of the brigades volunteer members from New York had never fired a musket upon marching into the swamps and woods southwest of Petersburg. But the dusty blue-collar workers became a force to be reckoned with as they dug and marched westward to force Gen. Robert E. Lee to extend forces away from Petersburg. Following the brigades largest battle, Five Forks, the Union marched rapidly westward to keep Lee from joining Gen. Joseph Johnston. The brigade was selected to assist in the surrender at Appomattox. Those acts alone would have solidified the brigades place in history, but its men also served as caretakers of the peace during their march back to Washington, D.C.--especially after the assassination of President Lincoln. Gregorys New York Brigade deserves to be honored as much as those who fought in the major battles of the war. Find out why in this detailed account of its well deserved place in history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the 107th New York Volunteer Infantry arrived in Washington, D.C. in August 1862, President Lincoln personally honored them with a regimental banner. It was kept by Secretary of State William Seward and never saw a battlefield--the 107th Volunteers saw many. This book presents a day-to-day chronicle of the regiment's actions during the Civil War, from Antietam to Chancellorsville to Gettysburg to their deadliest fight at New Hope Church. At the Siege of Atlanta, where citizens dug furnished caves to escape the shelling, the 107th took fire from determined rebel snipers and were among the first troops to enter the city.

Download or read book The Petersburg Campaign written by Edwin Bearss and published by Savas Beatie. This book was released on 2014-03-19 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wide-ranging and largely misunderstood series of operations around Petersburg, Virginia, were the longest and most extensive of the entire Civil War. The fighting that began in early June 1864 when advance elements from the Union Army of the Potomac crossed the James River and botched a series of attacks against a thinly defended city would not end for nine long months. This important—many would say decisive—fighting is presented by legendary Civil War author Edwin C. Bearss in The Petersburg Campaign: The Western Front Battles, September 1864 – April 1865, Volume 2, the second in a ground-breaking, two-volume compendium. Although commonly referred to as the "Siege of Petersburg," that city (as well as the Confederate capital at Richmond) was never fully isolated and the combat involved much more than static trench warfare. In fact, much of the wide-ranging fighting involved large-scale Union offensives designed to cut important roads and the five rail lines feeding Petersburg and Richmond. This volume of Bearss' study includes these major battles: - Peeble's Farm (September 29 – October 1, 1864) - Burgess Mills (October 27, 1864) - Hatcher Run (February 5 – 7, 1865) - Fort Stedman (March 25, 1865) - Five Forks Campaign (March 29 – April 1, 1865) - The Sixth Corps Breaks Lee's Petersburg Lines (April 2, 1865) Accompanying these salient chapters are original maps by Civil War cartographer Steven Stanley, together with photos and illustrations. The result is a richer and deeper understanding of the major military episodes comprising the Petersburg Campaign.

Book Gregory Peck

Download or read book Gregory Peck written by Lynn Haney and published by Da Capo Press. This book was released on 2009-04-27 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: His first screen test was a disaster, his features were large and irregular, his left ear outsized the right, yet he would one day be headlined as the Most Handsome Man in the World. And most of his leading ladies—among them, Ingrid Bergman, Jennifer Jones, Audrey Hepburn, Sophia Loren, and Ava Gardner—would not disagree. Irreverent, candid, refreshingly honest, Lynn Haney's carefully researched biography not only charts the remarkable career of the Oscar-winning star but also plumbs Peck's frequently troubling complexity in his off-screen roles as husband, father, lover, and son. About the tough times, Haney minces no words; but the misfortunes by no means eclipse the energy, intensity, and excitement that characterized Peck's five decades of moviemaking. This is a book filled with telling photographs, and a story cast with movie moguls from Louis B. Mayer to Darryl Zanuck, with directors from Hitchcock and Walsh to Huston and Wyler, with nearly every major luminary in Hollywood, and, starring for the first time in toto, Gregory Peck.
