Book excerpt: Here, in his own words, is the true story of America's wildest flying hero, of his extraordinary heroism, and of his greatest battle of all—the fight to survive. The World War II air war in the Pacific needed tough men like Colonel Pappy Boyington and his Black Sheep Squadron. The legendary Marine Corps officer and his bunch of misfits, outcasts, and daredevils gave new definition to “hell-raising”—on the ground and in the skies. Pappy himself was a living legend—he personally shot down twenty-eight Japanese planes, and won the Congressional Medal of Honor and the Navy Cross. He broke every rule in the book doing so, but when he fell into the hands of the vengeful Japanese his real ordeal began.

Book Arctic Cinemas and the Documentary Ethos

Download or read book Arctic Cinemas and the Documentary Ethos written by Lilya Kaganovsky and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2019-02-18 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning with Robert Flaherty’s Nanook of the North (1922), the majority of films that have been made in, about, and by filmmakers from the Arctic region have been documentary cinema. Focused on a hostile environment that few people visit, these documentaries have heavily shaped ideas about the contemporary global Far North. In Arctic Cinemas and the Documentary Ethos, contributors from a variety of scholarly and artistic backgrounds come together to provide a comprehensive study of Arctic documentary cinemas from a transnational perspective. This book offers a thorough analysis of the concept of the Arctic as it is represented in documentary filmmaking, while challenging the notion of "The Arctic" as a homogenous entity that obscures the environmental, historical, geographic, political, and cultural differences that characterize the region. By examining how the Arctic is imagined, understood, and appropriated in documentary work, the contributors argue that such films are key in contextualizing environmental, indigenous, political, cultural, sociological, and ethnographic understandings of the Arctic, from early cinema to the present. Understanding the role of these films becomes all the more urgent in the present day, as conversations around resource extraction, climate change, and sovereignty take center stage in the Arctic’s representation.

Book Capitalism and Schizophrenia in the Later Novels of Louis Ferdinand C line

Download or read book Capitalism and Schizophrenia in the Later Novels of Louis Ferdinand C line written by Greg Hainge and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 2001 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Re-examining the works of France's most controversial of literary figures, this book contends that Louis-Ferdinand Céline's pronouncements on the importance of style must be taken seriously if an understanding of those works is to be reached. Capitalism and Schizophrenia in the Later Novels of Louis-Ferdinand Céline provides a major reconsideration of the greater part of the oeuvre of this too-often neglected author. Leaving behind the symbolic capital that the name Céline accrued during the Second World War, this study looks at the works written around and after this period in order to understand the importance of their revolutionary aesthetic not only for their genesis, but also for their very content. The approach taken is unashamedly theoretical which allows this study to provide insights not only into the works of Céline, but also into those of the French thinkers Deleuze and Guattari whose thought, it is argued here, can only be apprehended through application.
