Book excerpt: Most of the knowledge-based economies (KBEs) operate in a neoclassical economic model that does not recognize the importance of natural resources and sustainability beyond the market forces. In contrast, KBEs that rely on endogenous factors harmonize with the enlightened anthropocentrism for sustainable development with scientific and technical abilities to design the ecological system for infusing human values into nature. For example, the Quintuple Helix Model of Innovation. In this exploratory research, it was found that the conventional structure of universities in Botswana is unable to produce glocal green knowledge and innovation in their mainstream knowledge production process due to bureaucratism, rationalism, myths and ceremonies, isomorphism, and legitimacy whereas institutional logics and agency of social actors support for Paris Climate Agreement and 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Hence, the Quintuple Helix Model with Mode 3-Knowledge production is used to redesign universities' conventional structures. This study perused two sources of data, document analysis, and interviews. Data collected from documents were analyzed by axial coding. After that, interview data from five internal stakeholders were collected based on priori codes, themes, and concepts developed with document analysis. They were thematically analyzed for triangulation. Finally, the theory was developed by induction underpinning with interpretive philosophy when redesigning universities' conventional structure. The proposed model designed is called 'Green University System' to facilitate the production. of glocal green knowledge and innovation for sustainable development with Mode 3 and Quintuple Helix model of innovation.

However, due to bureaucratic challenges and myths, conventional universities produce knowledge and innovation in the sense of traditional disciplinary knowledge, which are not adequate to meet the goals of sustainable development. This book provides a model for greening a university which in turn can produce green knowledge and innovation in the mainstream knowledge production process. This model, which is based on research, can be adopted by the conventional universities in other regions. Such a process results in providing benefits to stakeholders of the university at the micro-level. At the macro-level, it blends with the other knowledge systems—namely, the natural environment of society, economic system, media-based and culture-based public and civil society, and political system—to create a sustainable knowledge economy.

Book excerpt: Universities and economic development in Africa: Pact, academic core and coordination draws together evidence and synthesises the findings from eight African case studies. The three key findings presented in this report are as follows: 1. There is a lack of clarity and agreement (pact) about a development model and the role of higher education in development, at both national and institutional levels. There is, however, an increasing awareness, particularly at government level, of the importance of universities in the global context of the knowledge economy. 2. Research production at the eight African universities is not strong enough to enable them to build on their traditional undergraduate teaching roles and make a sustained contribution to development via new knowledge production. A number of universities have manageable student-staff ratios and adequately qualifi ed staff, but inadequate funds for staff to engage in research. In addition, the incentive regimes do not support knowledge production. 3. In none of the countries in the sample is there a coordinated effort between government, external stakeholders and the university to systematically strengthen the contribution that the university can make to development. While at each of the universities there are exemplary development projects that connect strongly to external stakeholders and strengthen the academic core, the challenge is how to increase the number of these projects. The project on which this report is based forms part of a larger study on Higher Education and Economic Development in Africa, undertaken by the Higher Education Research and Advocacy Network in Africa (HERANA). HERANA is coordinated by the Centre for Higher Education Transformation in South Africa.

In various countries, the Triple Helix concept has also been used as an operational strategy for regional development and to further the knowledge-based economy. This short review (4000 words) provides an update (in January 2012) of the further elaborations of various Triple Helix models (such as a neo-institutional versus neo-evolutionary version). The surplus of using different models is specified in terms of research strategies. Using Triple Helix indicators, one can evaluate to what extent an innovation system is nationally, regionally, or technologically integrated.

Book excerpt: Universities are isomorphic not because of the effectiveness of their processes but because of the legitimacy assigned by institutional logic. However, sustainable development discourses invoke a novel mission for producing knowledge and innovation for sustainable development. Accordingly, this research collected data from five types of internal stakeholders' intellections of the four pillars of green university infrastructure. The analysis of data collected from 89 university stakeholders sufficient for a 90% confidence level with 5% relative tolerable error was organized as five groups in a contingency table for the chi-square test. The statistical analysis, that is, the chi-square value, indicates that all five stakeholders perceive in the same direction - that the four pillars of the green university soft infrastructure need to be reconfigured to produce green knowledge and innovation. Hence, the findings inspire the conventional universities and policymakers to transform their universities into sustainable institutions with four pillars of soft green infrastructure.

The ability to tolerate or adapt and overwinter by effectively countering these stresses is a very multifaceted phenomenon. In addition, the inability to do so which renders the crops susceptible is again the result of various exogenous and endogenous interactions in the ecosystem. Both biotic and abiotic stresses occur at various stages of plant development and frequently more than one stress concurrently affects the crop. Stresses result in both universal and definite effects on plant growth and development. One of the imposing tasks for the crop researchers globally is to distinguish and to diminish effects of these stress factors on the performance of crop plants, especially with respect to yield and quality of harvested products. This is of special significance in view of the impending climate change, with complex consequences for economically profitable and ecologically and environmentally sound global agriculture. The challenge at the hands of the crop scientist in such a scenario is to promote a competitive and multifunctional agriculture, leading to the production of highly nourishing, healthy and secure food and animal feed as well as raw materials for a wide variety of industrial applications. In order to successfully meet this challenge researchers have to understand the various aspects of these stresses in view of the current development from molecules to ecosystems. The book will focus on broad research areas in relation to these stresses which are in the forefront in contemporary crop stress research.
