Book excerpt: This report is an indicator-based assessment of the progress being made by EU member states and candidate countries to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, in line with the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Kyoto Protocol. Assessment is made of national programmes in terms of actual results achieved during the period 1990-2000 and projected progress by 2010. It considers the effectiveness of policies, both national and Community-wide, and additional measures required. It focuses on trends in the main socio-economic sectors of energy supply, transport, industry, agriculture and waste management.

Download or read book Greenhouse Gas Emission Trends and Projections in Europe 2005 written by European Environment Agency and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report assesses whether EU member states and EEA countries are on track to achieve the objectives of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the targets for cutting greenhouse gas emissions under the Kyoto Protocol, based mainly on analysis of domestic policies and measures. The data cover both actual progress during the years 1990 to 2003 and projected progress to the year 2010. The latest projections for 2010 show that existing domestic policies and measures by the EU-15 member states will not be sufficient to reach its Kyoto targets. However, this could be achieved with additional policies and measures currently being planned and the use of credits from emissions-saving projects in third countries through the Kyoto Protocol's "flexible mechanisms". All ten new EU Member States are on track to achieve their individual Kyoto targets.

Book Recent Trends and Projections in EU Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Download or read book Recent Trends and Projections in EU Greenhouse Gas Emissions written by and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the European Union (EU) increased by 0.6 % in 2017, according to preliminary estimates from Member States, mostly because of road transport. Without further robust and ambitious policies and measures, those currently in place at national level will be insufficient to achieve the reduction targets set for 2030.

Book Greenhouse Gas Emission Trends and Projections in Europe 2006

Download or read book Greenhouse Gas Emission Trends and Projections in Europe 2006 written by European Environment Agency and published by European Environment Agency. This book was released on 2006 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The latest projections from pre-2004 EU Member States (EU-15) show that greenhouse gas emissions could be brought down to 8.0 per cent below 1990 levels by 2010. If all existing and planned domestic policy measures are implemented and Kyoto mechanisms as well as carbon sinks are used, the EU-15 will reach its Kyoto Protocol target. This projection relies on figures from several Member States which suggest that they will cut emissions by more than is required to meet their national targets. Existing domestic policies and measures will reduce total EU-15 greenhouse gas emissions by a net effect of 0.6 per cent from 1990 levels. When additional domestic policies and measures (planned but not yet implemented) are taken into account, the EU-15 could reduce emissions by 4.6 per cent. The projected use of Kyoto mechanisms by ten of the EU-15 will reduce emissions by a further 2.6 per cent at a cost of EUR 2 830 million. The use of carbon sinks, such as planting of forests to remove CO2, would contribute an additional 0.8 per cent. All ten new EU Member States are on track to achieve their individual Kyoto targets, despite rising emissions. This is largely due to economic restructuring in the 1990s.

Book Trends and Projections in Europe 2021

Download or read book Trends and Projections in Europe 2021 written by and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year 2020 saw remarkable progress towards meeting the EU's climate and energy targets. Rarely in the publication of the annual Trends and projections in Europe report has this executive summary presented such substantial progress as this edition does. Preliminary estimates indicate that, in 2020, we witnessed the full achievement - and even overachievement - of Europe's 20-20-20 goals for climate change mitigation, renewable energy deployment and energy efficiency gains. This keeps Europe well on track in its journey towards climate neutrality by mid-century. Although the achievements of 2020 build upon many years of work towards climate and energy sustainability, the progress made in 2020 is also rooted in exceptional circumstances. The global COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted many key facets of European society and economy and has forced adaptation and change through crisis. At the time of this report's publication, Europe is slowly reopening from the lockdowns imposed in response to the pandemic, and stability is again becoming palpable. However, with the return of normalcy is the risk of returning to old habits, old consumption patterns and unsustainable practices. The way that European countries recover from the COVID-19 crisis will largely determine how much Europe's climate and energy progress can be accelerated in the coming years. Although the EU reached its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions target for 2020 well before the pandemic and its impacts, and it was well on its way towards achieving the 2020 target for renewable energy shares, achieving climate neutrality by mid-century will demand change at a much more rapid pace over the next three decades.
