Agricultural Research Service and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-11 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Components for Management of Field Corn and Grain Sorghum Insects and Mites in the United States The corn earworm, European corn borer, corn rootworms, fall armyworm, southwestern corn borer, black cutworm, sorghum midge, greenbug, sorghum webworm, and spider mites are discussed. Control of these major pests relies, for the most part, on conventional pesticides. Alternative con trol will depend on filling some research, information, and education gaps. Index terms: corn, insect control, insect pests, integrated pest management, mite pests, sorghum. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book RESEARCH on Grain Sorghum Insects and Spider Mites in Texas

Download or read book RESEARCH on Grain Sorghum Insects and Spider Mites in Texas written by and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sorghum midge is one of the most damaging insect pests of grain sorghum in Texas. Loss estimates from this insect have exceded $10 million in all sorghum-producing counties of Texas except in the northern Panhandle and the Trans-Pecos. Early uniform planting of grain sorghum within a given area is the best means of avoiding damage by this pest. When this is not practiced, insecticidal control is often necessary to present severe losses. Research has shown that most effective control is obtained when insecticides are applied at the time blooms first appear on the grain heads. Control data with insecticides and methods of determining the damage by the sorghum midge in grain sorghum are reported. The greenbug attacked large acreages of grain sorghum in texas in 1968 and 1969. This insect is very damaging to small plants and capable of causing serious plant stand reductions. Small plants, 5 inches tall, died within 4 days when insecticide was not applied to conrol a population of 2,700 greenbugs per plant. Significant yield increases were obtained in 1969 by controlling greenbugs with granular disulfoton (Di-System) used as a soil treatment either at planting time or at a later sidedress. (...).

This book was released on 2018-03-17 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Release of Parasitoids to Control Greenbugs on Sorghum The cost of chemical control, the resistance of the greenbug and the Banks grass mite to insecticides, and the killing of beneficial predators and parasites by insecticides warrant alternatives for controlling greenbugs. Host plant resistance seems to be the most practical long-range alternative, but farmers need as many control Options as possible. Release of parasitoids was studied as a possible control of greenbugs on sorghum. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Economic Impact of Greenbug Resistant Grain Sorghum Varieties

Download or read book Economic Impact of Greenbug Resistant Grain Sorghum Varieties written by Gerard Dharmaratne and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The greenbug Schizaphis graminum (Rodini), became an important pests of grain sorghum in the late 1960's. To control the pest with a minimum use of insecticides, resistant sorghum hybrids were developed and became available to farmers in 1976. An evaluation of the performance of these greenbug resistant hybrids with respect to the conventional nonresistant hybrids was performed using a sample of 40 grain sorghum farmers in the Texas Blacklands. A production function was estimated using data from 1977-81. Interaction terms between variety and insecticide use indicated a yield reduction of nearly 300 pounds of grain sorghum per acre when insecticides were not applied to nonresistant grain sorghum. The parameter estimate was significant at the 90% level. Estimated yield reduction for resistant hybrids when insecticides were not applied was 193 pounds per acre and was not statistically significant at the 90% confidence level. The acreage of greenbug resistant grain sorghum increased from 1977-81, while acreage of nonresistant sorghum decreased. However, there were no significant differences among the mean yields or the yield variance (at the 95% confidence level) between the two sorghum types. The mean insecticide use was 0.24 applications higher for the nonresistant hybrids than for the resistant hybrids. Economic analysis showed that cultivation of the resistant sorghum using insecticides generated the highest net returns per acre ($82.27). The greenbug resistant grain sorghum produced across the country without use of insecticides had an estimated increase in farmer profits of $53,514 over the production of nonresistant sorghum using insecticides. Considering these differences in the net returns and reduced insecticide applications, the use of greenbug resistant grain sorghum shows an economic and ecological advantage over nonresistant grain sorghum in the Texas Blacklands.
